Cannon is one of those guys that when healthy is a beast.

but an injury, any type injury (even a hangnail) and he is horrible.

the needle is either all the way up or all the way down, no middle ground with him.
What minor injuries has he struggled through? His week 1 shoulder injury looked bad enough that there was concern that his season could he over. His midseason illness was so bad that Belichick praised him for playing at all. That 2015 injury was the same kind of thing that Wynn missed half of this season for. These aren’t hangnails.

He's a starting tackle. He's only going to make a little more than $6m. His dead money would be more than any cap savings ($5.1m v. $4.5m).

I’m not sure that he’s worthy of the 4th highest cap hit on the team, that’s all. Yes, it’s easier to wait until next year and see a bigger cap savings, but there are times where he doesn’t look like he belongs on the field at all. I don’t know how his health is looking, but he’s been somewhat inconsistent. You’re right that he provides good value when he’s healthy and playing well.

BB will do some contract maneuvers to reduce his cap hit, or release him.

Cap hit isn't the issue. Actual money is what counts. Cannon's cap hit is currently projected to be $9,622,916. But his dead money is projected to be $5,133,334, and that number's not coming back to the team. So cutting him this year, while saving some money ($4,489,582), would leave the team with having to fill the starting RT role for $4,489,582 or less, in order to achieve any savings.

Here's the list of scheduled FA tackles. This is the group from which you've got to find a starting level RT who'll play for that $4.5m slot, if you're not going to turn the job over to either a pick from this year's draft or one of last year's wounded rookies.

And there's no Scar around this year, so the idea of taking a lesser player and coaching him up is a lot more questionable.

Shelton becoming a Rosenhaus guy probably helps us...? Could upgrade him but, wouldn't mind him back and I don't think he'll be crazy expensive.

thats what I'm wondering. Could we afford to bring him back? For the right price, he would be a good role player again.

Nah, let’s upgrade him.

Aside from the return of Cajuste, I’m wondering if another higher round draft pick is in order? In a perfect world, Cannon remains healthy and plays well.

They don't have a 2nd. So we'd be looking at a 1st or a 3rd, barring some kind of trade down from round 1. I haven't looked at this year's crop of OTs, yet, so you probably have a much better handle on what would be available in those slots than I do, right now.

I’d love to pretend, but I’m not too familiar with them myself. I was just speaking generally, mostly due to the 3 thirds, but it looks like SI is projecting five to go in the top 20, so maybe they’ll take a look at no.’s #4 and #5 in that late teens/early twenties range. If they wait until the third round, it may be too risky to trot out two 3rd round picks (Cajuste) for a competition at starting RT, especially when you consider that they haven’t played.

I keep forgetting about the lack of a second. Maybe I’ve just buried it that deeply in my mind.

A promising player but the question is what is the price?

I highly doubt the Ravens would trade a player to the Patriots.

Unless it is a useless linemen that they fleeced BB for.

I'll have around 10 1st Rd grades and 3 will be from Willis, Thomas & Wirfs.

I've loved Wirfs personally and for us. Former wrestler, track, baseball in HS. Looks like an enormous TE. Soft quick feet. Can erase any initial space up the arc and has the feet/balance to stay with the rusher. Cuts off angles, covers a lot of ground very quick - some of the plays he makes backside are pretty nice. Versatile. Even if Cannon plays you strongly consider him if he's on the board imo.

I really like Becton, who's a freak. 6'6/365. Footwork is smooth and fluid and has crazy reach. He's got arguably the heaviest hands in the draft. Could improve his recognition in certain situations that can cause him to become late with his strikes but he offers a ton.

Josh Jones is an athlete that needs work at the position but is intriguing.

I could see someone falling in love with Lucas Niang. Lots of upside. Great 2018 tape. Easy mover. Great lower half movement. Eats up yards and natural climbing skills.

Wirfs, Becton, Thomas, Willis will be my top 4

Right.

I’d be okay with giving up a 4th. 3rd may be too steep.
I’d be fine with a third considering they’re supposed to get 2 third round comp picks.

Thanks, BGC. It seems to be a decent year for OL.
