We Need New Scouts

I do think the pats are weaker at drafting certain positions compared to others (weaker at WR). However, I do think it is kind of foolish to say that our scouts failed after seeing one year of Harry.

Also, I think in general the patriots seem to draft with the one year early approach many times. Specifically applied to the 2019 draft, I see Harris as a potential Burkhead replacement, Cowart as a potential Shelton replacement, and Cajuste as a potential Cannon/swing tackle replacement based on how he does.

Put another way, what would Harry have to do to be an acceptable late 1st/early 2nd round pick? (I do not believe there is a significant difference at talent at pick 30 compared to pick 35).

People exaggerate how complicated football is. They love the narrative that BB is a genius and his schemes are just so complex and next level that you need a PhD to comprehend them. Yet Antonio Brown came into a game on no practice, they told him to run a route, and he got open easily. Getting open is on the player. No, I am not comparing Harry to AB, but if Harry had the talent to justify his draft position, he would have gotten open a couple times regardless of whether he mastered the whole playbook, just like tons of rookie WRs did this year and every year.

He wasn’t just sitting around waiting to play. He was the teams punt returner pretty much right off the bat and was the teams 4th/5th receiving option until they needed him to step up in 2013.

Yup. I saw the whole thing on TV. Not just a punt returner, but a historically great one at that. I think at some point he was second best ever in one of the metrics.

Our complex system is certainly a double-edged sword.

I wish I knew why it clicks so much for some people like Welker, Amendola, or Moss and not for others. Which is, I think, the ultimate problem - there is no foolproof way to figure out if someone is going to get the system.

Naaahhh....I don’t think that’s what most people believe. But actually in the 2018 offseason, I had some posts similar to the ones you are seeing now, which was that basically this was unsustainable due to some very dry drafts and likely to start having big effects in a few years when a bunch of aging veterans retire or move on. The Patriots have built a nearly impossible standard of excellence, and a major component is having a lot of solid contributors on rookie contracts (just like with every team, the draft is everything.). It may be a few rocky years talent-wise as the team seeks to do what they almost miraculously did in 2010 and continued through roughly 2014 before starting to get some bad draft returns. No team can possibly win at the draft year after year and avoid dry spells like this. Patriots in the mid-late 2000s had a similar dry spell.

The draft is one piece of building a roster.
