Not the one where the all star corner got roasted in the two most important games of the season

Are you talking about Gilmore? He absolutely did not get roasted in the two most important games of the season. He let up one touchdown against the Bills on a miscommunication with McCourty. Other than that was his typical shutdownself.

He got roasted by Parker, but that’s the only bad game he had. They were 17 point favorites. A lot of reasons they lost and a lot they could have done to fix the coverage problems.

Tennessee was the most important game, and I don’t think he allowed a reception.

Or are you taking about Revis? I can’t tell. He got roasted in the playoffs against Baltimore and allowed a TD in the SB (getting screened by the ref.)

Ty Law played in an easier era (for defense) but had more INTs. Gilmore played in a more difficult era. I'm going to lean towards Gilmore, but slightly.

how does 2018 Gilmore compare to 2019 Gilmore?

That’s a good question. From perception, you have a first team all-pro who was also arguably the most improved player on the team. Not sure if that perception is accurate. He was darn good in 2018 too. Think his Revis Island scheme was used less.

2019 Gilmore was somehow remarkably better. Seemed like he finally was 100% comfortable as well as stepped into his own prime. Gilmore's season, in this pass-friendly era of the NFL, was pretty absurd. He was the clear DPOY frontrunner for a reason. 2018 was not bad, and pretty damn good to be honest. 2019 was just that much better.

Almost like Steph Curry going from MVP to far more dominating, unanimous, runaway MVP the next year?

A bit of recency bias here?

I am biased towards Ty and honestly I think a SB win that season bumps it up for me. I’ll never forget those three INTs vs Manning.

I know it’s not completely fair but I still can’t get the last Miami game out of my head. Cost us the season IMO.

Best regular season-Gilmore
Best Postseason-Law

Agreed. Not saying the coaching shouldn’t have adjusted, they should have, but the coaching failed a lot of ways down the stretch. Unfortunately, it was still on Gilmore to make the plays, which he didn’t. So, amazing season, but not the best of all time for the patriots.

Did the Tennessee game happen as well where the Titans couldn’t even throw on the Patriots? How about Buffalo, where he had one miscommunication with McCourty and otherwise shutdown Brown? Gilmore has made a lot of tremendous clutch plays for the Patriots.

The recency bias isn’t about Gilmore’s greatness (all objective people outside New England and analytics sites have him as easily the best CB in the league.). The recency bias is only by those who are diminishing an all-time great season due to one game, one which it’s acknowledged the coaching staff choked like a dog against vs. Miami.

What was Ty Law’s worst game? Of course no one remembers.

Without Gilmore, it would not be shocking at all if the Patriots didn’t win the division. One loss to Buffalo? Believe it.

Where's 2009 Leigh Bodden??

I kid, I kid o_O

2003 Ty Law was special, but somehow I really think 2019 Gilmore reached some new heights. It didn't end in a Super Bowl win, but that's hardly Gilmore's fault.

2003 Ty Law... The rules were different, but the competition was better...

Gilmore in 2019 would be second

To answer your question, Leigh is in the new Hernandez documentary. Gets quite a bit of screen time. Too bad the timing didn’t work out with him...brought him in just as he was declining and injured. Seemed like an ideal fit for the Pats; I think Belichick thought he got a steal at the time.

Hate to feel like I’m dissing Ty Law because that’s not my intention. Loved the dude growing up and grateful for his elite play,

BUT...

The 2003 Patriots were really strong up front with Seymour and Warren, then a phenomenal group of linebackers in McGinest, Bruschi, Vrabel, Pfifer (Colvin was the huge FA signing but got a bad injury.). That front 7 was without question the best in the league. They also had Rodney Harrison in that secondary.

That isn’t to say Law wasn’t great. He was. But the defense was constructed very differently. In addition, it’s been noted the rules were very different and defensive holding was rarely enforced.

With largely the same front 7, the next year, 2004, the Patriots lost both starting CBs in Law and Poole. Samuel (second year), Gay, and our favorite two way player Troy Brown were inserted as CBs. The defense was still absolutely dominant. You do have to look at what Law had around him.

On the other hand, the 2019 Patriots had...drumroll...ONE pro bowl player besides Gilmore on defense, and I don’t know great Hightower really was. The defense was built from the outside in, with the secondary the great strength. And Gilmore was the absolute stud who made everyone in the secondary’s job easier by erasing any player the team wanted. This is theoretical, but I think there’s no way that defense has close to the same success without Gilmore. Just look at Week 17 vs. Miami for proof of what the defense could sink to if Gilmore is playing like an average CB and getting (predictably) burned by a great receiver, having no help.

That’s great that Law picked Manning three times in the playoffs, but no QB would have even thrown at Gilmore three times in the playoffs. The previous SB Gilmore iced the game with an interception and his clutch play has always been elite.

Not sure but he had plenty of bad ones. He routinely got toasted by Keyshawn Johnson for some reason. Struggled against the likes of Marvin Harrison, Eric Moulds and Oronde Gadsden. There were also times where JAG’s would have good days on him.

Granted, these were during the Carrol years but he had his best years in 2001 and 2003. 1999, 2000 and 2002 were arguably his worst years.

Fair enough... that all makes sense.

The failure vs Miami still hurts though.

It's hard to decide between Ty Law (where's 2001? His Pick 6 in the Super Bowl arguably won the game for us as we only needed a FG to win at the end of regulation), Revis, who had one stellar year for us, also resulting in a SB win, and Gilmore, who was great early on, but tailed off with the rest of the D in 2019, which resulted in a late must-win loss to Miami, and arguably an early exit from the playoffs.

I still say it's Law, either in 2001 or 2003, and that takes nothing away from Gilmore.

I think my boy JC Jax should get the nod over 2010 McCourty.
Or is it because McCourty (2010) was probably always on the #1 receiver and JC is on the #2, while Gilmore takes the #1?
