People can’t forgive Gilmore for not being able to cover Parker but forget Revis was absolutely toasted by Steve Smith in the playoffs? Difference is defense adjusted in playoffs after realizing this just wasn’t a good matchup, whereas they stubbornly left Gilmore in a stupid 1-on-1 matchup. Just like in an MVP season for a QB, there will always be a bad game or two even for the DPOY or first team all-pro. This is pro sports, and the expectations for Gilmore were sky high but he generally exceeded them almost every week.

Revis was awesome in 2014 but also at the end of his peak. Gilmore in 2019 was as good as Revis at the very height of his powers, circa 2009-11.

2018 Stephon Gilmore vs 2014 Darrelle Revis is a better debate. Both were first team all-pros and won championships. Gilmore had the dagger interception to win the Super Bowl, a historically great defensive performance where he was main the chess piece.

That’s a good debate. I’d say from my own viewing, Gilmore, Revis, the Woodsons, Bailey, and Deion are the only ones that make the cut...all due respect to Ty Law, deserving Hall of Famer. These guys were on another level though.

I voted Gilmore, but 2003 Tyrone Pool should at least be on the list.

2010 McCourty should not be on the list over him. He had a Kyle Arrington type year with INT but sucked in man to man coverage. He got embarrassed by Braylon Edwards of all people in the divisional playoff game. Like Malcolm Jenkins, he was moved to safety because they sucked at CB.

Their D really wasn’t that good that year. And Revis lost a step.

However, if Patricia wasn’t there, they would’ve been a lot better.

I'd just think that if one guy wins DPOY and the others don't, then that guy wins by default.

To be fair there’s also not as many great candidates for the award this year.

For instance, Gilmore isn’t winning this award last year when Aaron Donald notched 20 sacks at DT.

2003 Ty Law would also have a strong case for DPOY this year.

Regular season alone it's no doubt Gilly. Ty's 03 playoffs makes it a debate. But then I think you need to add context that they only allowed 76 yards passing in the playoffs this year albeit one game.

My first instinct was to go Law in 2003... it’s really close, Gilmore played out of his mind this year but Law was unbelievable in 2003... he also got 3 ints against Manning in the divisional round, ending their Cinderella touchdown record season

It's difficult to compare seasons. One variable is that Revis stabilized a multi-year problem. He brought confidence/attitude to the defensive backfield which had been lacking.

They had been horrible for a few years.

As good as Law and Revis were in their respective season neither were DPOY candidates and a main reason the defense was ranked as the best in the league statistically.
