We Gave Up A 2nd Round Pick For Sanu

Perhaps the strategy should be to cut Sanu in the hope that someone else out there can replace him at the same price. NOT!

Next year, we have Edelman (who could retire or be traded to play with brady) and Harry. We need at least 3 more. If BB knows a player than he can sign for $6.5M a year, he'll do it. AND, he would then EXTEND Sanu, not cut him.

We would then have 2 WR's for the same cap money, both on 2-4 contracts. AND, Belichick would still looking to add a WR or draft one.

If BB tries to extend Sanu, Kraft should fire him.

What do you think about Randall Cobb? A lot of people thought he was done but he had a solid year for the dallas cowboys. Can still get open.

Dallas was loaded with Cooper, Witten, and Gallup. On here it wouldn’t be uncommon to see a number 1 on Cobb, which he won’t beat often

This trade really sucked but I was in favor at the time, the price was steep but they needed something at a time they still had championship hopes so I'm not gonna just bash on the trade and pretend I wasn't excited back then. For everything Sanu did in this league so far it looked like a signing that would produce immediate effects, it didn't.

I don't remember if Gordon was already released or not but BB certainly had made up his mind at that point. He had to do something. If the team, at that time in the season, was playing like it did in December, I think he would've stayed with the pick and maybe try a different option.vets
It sucks because just now that we have a pick in the lower 20's , we don't have a precious second. But Sanu is a solid vet and he should be able to do better next season. He is better than those pretty old banged up almost forgotten vets they brought in last off season to compete for a #4 or #5 WR spots.

Even Irv Smith who was considered the 3rd best TE but with a gap from the 2 guys who were draft in the 1st, I didn't follow the Vikings but it seems he did all right this season.

This is exactly where I was at the time of the trade. I figured we overpaid to get him from Atlanta but I really thought he would be a key cog going forward and the price would be worth it to jumpstart the offense. I know some people keep claiming his lack of production was due to the ankle injury and I am sure that was a factor but at the same time an ankle shouldn't keep him from running a route a yard short of a first down. An ankle shouldn't have him dropping passes and whiffing on blocks. It just didn't seem to click and now we are in a weird spot having given up so much to get him and owing him way more money than most would assume he is worth based on what he gave us. Honestly I hope we make a move for OBJ (we would have to figure it out with the cap, I know) or some established, proven receiver of that ilk and pair him with Harry on the outside, Edelman in the slot, and then Sanu plays the 2016 Hogan role.

I think he's good enough to stay ... needs more time to learn the system.
However ... I think this is more the case of if he's worth 6.5 million.
I say he stays if he accepts a new 2-year deal worth around $8 million total.

37-year-old Witten? And Cooper is no sure thing to be on the team next year. Regardless, it is not 2014, so we should have no interest in Cobb.

Is that the same Dawson Knox who averaged one reception over the last five games, including 1/14 in their playoff loss? Very good developmental prospect but stop pretending that he would’ve been a difference maker for the patriots this year. So you’re also apparently giving up on Joejuan on already? That’s logical.

As for the rookie wide receivers who had productive years (I wanted them to draft Deebo or AJ), we have absolutely no idea whether they would have been productive in the patriots offense with a QB who has no patience when it comes to rookie targets. Did Brady have tolerated their growing pains early in the season question?

As for Sanu, almost all of us would like to have a do-over on that trade but compounding the mistake by dumping him for a seventh round pick in the off-season is idiotic, in my opinion. He may have a new quarterback throwing to him, likely will have a new OC, and will have a full offseason to learn the offense. Hopefully his poor performance was more related to the ankle injury than we know. It seems unlikely that he will ever produce at a level that justifies the second round cost, but I’m not giving up on him being a useful part of the offense. Multiple NFL people stated after the trade that he is perfect for the patriots offense. Maybe that will show up next year. He had been incredibly durable throughout his career and it typified the patriots season that his streak was broken shortly after they acquired him.

Lol Dawson Knox certainly would have been a difference maker seeing as how he had 2 less catches, 84 more yards, and one more touchdown than Ben Watson and Matt LaCosse combined. By all accounts he is a good blocker as well which is more than anyone can say for Lacosse. For an offense that desperately needed pass catchers it's foolish to say he wouldn't have made a difference. He also went in the third round while we had second and third round picks who were healthy scratches almost all year.

The old "we don't know how they would've performed in our offense" trope. Obviously no one does but at least we know that some of those other guys are athletic enough to get some separation. I am not out on Harry yet by any means but the knock on him coming out was he couldn't get separation and that still looks to be the case. I am sure if he is able to refine his route running ability and use his body better he will be able to get open more consistently but right now he has a lot of work to do.
