Question for 2020 - If Brady Retires...

I think things are aligning nicely for Tom to - in his final and most unlikely turnaround - win his 7th ring and then retire.

No athlete has overcome doubts, long odds, “impossibilities” as much as Brady. Now he’s getting full binders worth of doubters every day, being written off by every publication and talk show. The stage is set for one final physics defying act of triumph.

The offense sucks at the moment but this is the NFL. Many times we see offenses and defenses just suddenly turn it around without much explanation. I expect the Patriots to finally start looking like the Patriots against them Chiefs, as I said last week they would bottom out with a loss at Houston before putting it together. They realize they won’t win games without making big plays and being more aggressive.

Tom specifically told Gisele “just two more” in his documentary, and the number 7 is significant in American sports as no star player in the modern era has achieved it. I think he’ll realize it’s time to be a full-time father. The only issue is that it’s in direct conflict with his tremendous will to prove he can play into his mid-40s, but I think after the grind and frustration of this season, he’s going to walk into the sunset with a final SB MVP. He didn’t come this far just to come this far.

He's not leaving, OBJ is going to be here next season and the final season of Brady and the Pats will end with a Super Bowl.

The Patriots do not have the same luxury of parting with Brady. If Brady goes, there is no Young, Rodgers or even Luck to step in. So the Patriots are certainly incentivized to hold onto him rather than, say, signing Marcus Mariota.

Gotta show me the person who wants Mariota or anyone over Brady.

What if he retires or moves on ? Time doesn't stop, life still continues and an experienced QB will be needed.

If Brady retires???

I'm taking it day by day in life and as a Pats fan. Whatever happens happens.

I'm enjoying both. Brady has given me and my family so many great memories that I will happily endure anything that comes.

If we are dealing in speculation, I would seriously look at Garrett Gilbert or Kyle Lauletta, both of whom were on BB's radar at one time. As far as filling in weak spots this season, how about Jeremy Hill at FB (he is taking tryouts now) and Matt Lengel as a blocking TE. Both have experience in the Pats' system.

This sounds horrible I'm sorry roll with Stidham and grab Mariotta or Bortles.

I'm aware. I meant full season as a starter for Stidham before I started daydreaming about other teams' castoffs.
I'd consider Bridgewater and wouldn't consider him a castoff. Many in NO see him as an ideal successor to Brees, but as a free agent-to-be, they have a decision much like Garapollo-Brady. His price in free agency could be high, though, making Stidham a more economical option, if the view is that he can handle it.

It's pretty obvious. If Brady retires then you trade for Nathan Peterman. IR Julz, Gilmore, and Wynn. Then you draft Trevor Lawrence.

Definitely the most fun option. Gilmore and Hightower will be 31 in 2021 - trade them for a first or two. McCourtys retire, Edelman retires, let Collins and Chung walk. Give Bill a year on the vineyard to recharge and let Steve have a trial run. You bottom out, draft well for 2 years, and you're back.

In all these comparisons of the greats who moved on from their teams to others in the twilight of their careers, we seem to have forgotten that the 49ers parted with Montana because they had Steve Young, the Packers parted with Favre because they had Aaron Rodgers, the Colts parted with Manning because they had Andrew Luck.

Not many teams have what Green Bay and Indy had. GB got extremely lucky that teams passed on Rodgers, it's pretty tough to beat that combo (Favre/Rodgers, I'd say only Montana/Young surpasses that, though it's close). And Indy had to tank to get Luck.

I will say this, as far as Stidham, I don't know if he'll be the answer to the trivia question of who replaced Brady, but he certainly has Jimmy G type talent (maybe even a stronger arm). He also seems to have a drive and determination similar to Jimmy G as well. It might be why Belichick passed on several bigger named QBs in the earlier rounds. There is something about Stidham, he just seems to have that "it" factor. I was very impressed in the small sample size we saw as a rookie in preseason, I was more impressed with him in his 1st preseason, than any other rookie QB since Brady.

Not comparing him to Rodgers or Luck, who took over for legends, and had excellent careers in their own right, but Stidham's talent intrigues me. He was rated as a 1st round pick prior to his last year at Auburn. That team though, was a dumpster fire, with a bunch of players leaving for the NFL draft, losing linemen to the NFL, poor WR play. Despite that, in his last game (a bowl game), he threw 5 TD passes. I feel we got a 1st round talent in the 4th round.

Tim Tebow may be ready for his NFL comeback.

100 % except the Steve B suggestion

Stockpile premium picks and cap space
Set up for the next leg of the dynasty

We already have the NFL leader in passer rating on the roster.

Why not let Edelman have a shot?

And I have to believe that they would be lining up here for the opportunity to QB this team and play for BB......

If Brady retires....it completely changes things for me. I would actually start to enjoy the team building process more than I do now because we likely will have to jettison some veterans with long contracts and bring in younger kids to rebuild. So, more emphasis on the draft (we would likely be drafting higher)...more emphasis on free agency...(adding quality players vs. plugging in holes with whatever $$$ we have left over)...

It would be as fun as the 2008 season was...trying to win as many games as possible one by one VS. going through the motions until a big game comes around every 3-4 weeks.

It would be great if the extremely obnoxious, taunting forum members could acknowledge what many said in 2017, which is that the Patriots have a really tough decision about Brady and Garoppolo. I for one wanted them to keep Brady for sentimental reasons but also thought Garoppolo was clearly the desired QB of the future in New England. It’s funny how many people mock and deride anyone who thought that was a complicated decision and refer to them as “Garoppolites” like they hate Brady and/or are really dumb. We always say that wins are everything, and Garoppolo is 18-4 as a starter. I am still glad they kept Brady (especially since it led to another Super Bowl), but this thread has me thinking about that time in 2017, as I read about how the Patriots should look into desperately trying to salvage QBs like Mariota and Bortles.

It’s okay to acknowledge it: the Patriots traded away a sure-fire winner and probable QB of the next decade and instead kept arguably the most treasured athlete in Boston sports history, which is what most fans wanted. Tough decision and a lot to both gain and lose by it. I’ve noticed that these same posters have been idiotically denying Garoppolo’s talent and basically using the old “system QB” argument without using those exact words.

I’m really hoping Brady doesn’t go play somewhere else. That would make the 2017 decision sting and maybe even cause people to second guess it. The Patriots should do everything they can to ensure he never puts on another team’s uniform. They doubled down on Brady before and should triple down on him in 2020, if he doesn’t retire. Anyone who thinks $30M is too much is crazy. The legacy value is keeping a generational athlete for his entire career, which is what basically every Patriots fan wants, far outweighs their disciplined value-based free agency approach. Brady is an exception to the rule.

probable QB of the next decade?

You mean, we had Mahomes, or Jackson, or Watson? Would JG be in anybody's top 5 for MVP? Top 10? Jackson, Wilson, Watson, McCaffrey, Michael Thomas, Nick Bosa, Mahomes, Dalvin Cook, Drew Brees, Stephon Gilmore are 10 better MVP candidates than JG. Maybe you could slot him somewhere near the bottom of the 10, I guess.

I root for Jimmy. Love the guy. But to call him the probable QB of the next decade is goofy. He's had a nice start to his career, doesn't make game-killing mistakes, has a ton of talent at his disposal, and is a solid QB.

What exactly does his 2019 “MVP Power Ranking” have to do with the likeliness he would have been the Patriots QB for the next decade? Did you see the Patriots draft room celebrate when they picked him in 2014? How often does that happen? He was an ideal fit in the Patriots system as clearly evidenced in practice and his limited time before getting injured in 2017. He is fitting in very well in San Francisco despite it being a very different system that de-emphasizes receivers and is a variation of Mike Shanahan’s zone blocking offense.

Shanahan is 20-24 as 49ers head coach. 16-4 with Garoppolo. 4-20 without him.

Sorry, I interpreted the comment "quarterback of the decade" to mean the NFL's best QB, bar none, for the next 10 years. If you meant a guy good enough to hold a job for 10 years on any team, then that's different.

No worries.
