Tua Tagovailoa injured today - considered serious

Andy, I know you can't pass up an argument but the post you quoted here was agreeing with you, but attempting to stay reasonably on-topic in the football forum.
Not Andy but you know that. Never said I disagreed, said my comment was not limited to football players.

Your post said w/their last name on it. So my post was in reference to that.
The name changes everything.
I disagree, name/no name you're not buying a "Michigan" jersey. You're buying it bc Tom wore it or Marcus Allen wore etc...
You're specifically buying something bc that person wore it.
Imo said person should be receiving some comp for that.

C'mon you have to know what I mean?

You're buying a #12 Michigan jersey, it's pretty clear who/why you're getting that specific one.
Perhaps it's not as clear as you think...

For a while I've had no issue with players being able to make money off their name but I also recognize how fast that would be abused. Recruiting would instantly become nothing more than which school's boosters could pay you the most to be in a commercial or make an appearence or something. The power schools would only get more powerful.
This just might be the worst argument in the history of "not paying college athletes".

Talk abt ignoring the obvious holy ****

Yes I was trying to make a quick point, late abt why you would by a jersey. Well aware he wore #10 lol.

Point is you're buying that specific one bc of who wore it. NOT the school.

Usually it's a combination of the 2... you have a favorite school, you wear the jersey of their best player. However, there are light years of difference between wearing a number associated with a specific player versus actually putting that player's name on the jersey.

Tom Brady has legal rights to his name and likeness. He does not, however, having legal rights to Michigan #10, no matter how closely that number is associated with him in the public's mind.

First part is a big disagree. Sure it's a combo in some cases but their are also a ton of people out there that could care less abt Michigan & Brady fans. Marcus Allen fans, Tebow fans. The schools aren't irrelevant but again you're making it a point to get that jersey. Very few people will simply spend that money for any old jersey.

Think abt it, your kid ask you for a Brady jersey, you're buying that bc Tom made it wore something. Not the school.

2nd part I'm not arguing. I'm simply saying this could be one way to compensate players.

Also I wish all these posters were this fired up abt talking actual football/Pats football.

Rewatch thread should be bumping? I'm looking forward to all the future discussions regarding strategy, x & o's & personnel :rolleyes:o_O

The value of a jersey isn’t there without the name

If my kid asked for a Brady jersey, I'm buying Patriots #12, not Michigan #10.

That's literally your opinion.

There are a ton of people buying jerseys bc of who wore it. Maybe its not everything in all cases but you're kidding yourself if you don't think its a factor.

You ask for a 47 Mia jersey you're getting that bc Irv wore it. Not the school or colors.

Yea I really don't care lol.

If someone seeks out a #10 from Michigan you know exactly why you're buying it.

Again I can't wait for all the energy we put in actual football discussion.

Paying college players would trigger an avalanche.

Everybody will want to get paid. Do they have contracts? A salary cap?
So? Those type of decisions are already made in pro sports, so there's a template. And let's not pretend Div 1 College Football is not a pro sport.

How much are these kids getting paid? Which kids are and aren't getting paid? A college team can have 100+ players on it. A very few college football teams actually turn a profit. Do they have to pay a percentage of that to players? Is that a massive recruiting advantage? Most of their profit goes right back into the athletic department and other sports programs..
Each player would ge paid whatever the college is willing to pay based on player's ability and college's need. Probably would need a salary cap. Pay for endorsements should be another opportunity.

Once you have started paying college athletes you have opened a Pandoras box. Whats to stop the side hustle to lure the top recruit to your school? Why shouldn't the Right Guard get paid when the star Running Back is? Screw playing the OL or DL when QB,RB, WR and TE is where the money is. Paying college players totally destroys any aspect of a team sport.

Do you actually believe that womens sports will take paying for male sports sitting down?
The side hustle's already in place and exacerbated by colleges failing to pay.

I think the bigger argument on the against side is the potential for corruption and buying players.
If there was a legal way for player to monetize ability, that would actually work against corruption which is already endemic in college sports.

It’s a valid argument that there could be a lot of bad to come out of having 18 year old kids thrown in a bidding war among boosters and supporters of the colleges they are considering.
It doesn’t take a leap of assumption to see it would be fraught with corruption, illicit incentive and ultimately some of the kids will be taken advantage of.
There has to be a plan, and limitations and enforcement.

How so? I assume “monetize ability” is a euphemism for be able to receive endorsement money. (If not please explain because that might change my response)

Opening up poor 18 year old kids to legal bribery in choosing an education, with no rules or limitation would be a disaster. Imo.

if I’m buying a 47 Miami jersey for Michael Irving I’m probably gonna go buy one that Isn’t an official with his name on the back.

I was looking for Montana ND jerseys recently. I was looking for ones with the name on the back that were customized. I wasn’t about to drop whatever it costs to buy a 2019 Notre dame jersey with just the number 3 on the back
