It's odd that the top team on the NYFL list got there after being fined a #1 draft pick and a record amount of money (at the time) for cheating.

Consider that the Pats have 7 teams on that list, not a bad body of work..
7. (2007)
16. (2014)
21. (2016)
32. (20013)
46. (2014)
51. (2001)
79. (2018)

Consider the Jets...

24. (1968)... 51 years ago of mediocrity and football ineptitude.
Brady has more playoff wins than NYJ post season appearances. I believe he has more wins than at least 25 other teams as well.

He also has more SB appearances than any other team I believe.

89 49ers and 85 Bears would wreck the 91 Skins

The numbers really are bordering on the absurd. In his career Brady has more playoff appearances than the Jete and 9 other franchises do in their history, he has more playoff wins than 27 franchises and has appeared in more Super Bowls than any team not named the Patriots.

No on 85 Bears. Didn't have the secondary depth to deal with Washington and if they stuck with their base D like they did in that MNF Miami game, they would get lit up. Gibbs learned from the Redskins embarrassing loss vs. Chicago in '85 and employed the two-TE set which gave Chicago problems in their '86 and '87 postseason matchups. 1991 Washington was miles better than even those Chicago beaters.

1989 49ers are a different story. Easily in the argument for best team ever on even a short list.

Chris

Yep, for some reason I had 25 in my head.

I say it all the time. There should be statues of him in Boston already.

The shell shock when Brady & Bill leave will be too much for some. People can't deal w a loss or 2 & still ***** at every chance.

And we're the biggest outliers in sports history!!!

I was reading all articles from 20-30 years ago. Looking into Bill & analytics & found these quotes along the journey...

"According to the parameters of the game, the nature of the game as it's played today, you can't keep a team together," said Bill Walsh, former coach, general manager and now a consultant for the San Francisco 49ers, just one of two teams (Dallas being the other) to win five Super Bowls. "The Yankees can do it with money and tradition, but it's truly tough in football because of the numbers you need."

"I think a veteran team can look to, at the most, three years of sustained viability as a true contender," said Carmen Policy, the Cleveland Browns' president. "Staying on top is not only more problematic, it's impossible."

Bill Polian, who constructed the great Buffalo Bills teams that reached four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990-93, said he believes that kind of sustained excellence is no longer possible.

"The beauty of this system is that even though it has a lot of drawbacks, it's a great equalizer," said Polian, now the Indianapolis Colts president. "By its nature, it erodes good teams. Teams can't stay long. Green Bay is an example. They made two straight Super Bowls, but the Packers were clearly eroded by the cap. It gives everybody a chance to be successful, a chance to feel they can be successful."

"The idea that you could have the 49ers, the Bills, the Redskins, the Cowboys, ..." Polian said of some of the greatest teams in NFL history. "No longer."

From Weeks 1-11 07 was a Top 5 GoAT team

From Weeks 12- 19 they weren't.
They were 1 if they finished the job.
How far not doing it drops them is impossible quantify.

Highest SRS by a Super Bowl Champion of all time. Highest total DVOA of all time. Their division was stacked too. The 11-5 Cowboys, who would win the Super Bowl the next year. The Giants, who even though they finished 8-8, were reigning Super Bowl champions. And the 10-6 Eagles, who have by far the best defensive DVOA ever recorded (the Redskins were the only team ALL YEAR to gain more than 300 yards against the Eagles defense) 261 point differential which is the 3rd highest of all time. Their 2 losses were by 3 points (gave up a fluke Hail Mary) and 2 points (rested starters since it was week 17 and they home field clinched)
When I think greatest ever of course mark rypien immediately comes to mind.

I could say the same thing about McMahon. Rypien had 28 TD/11 INT with a 97 passer rating against a pretty tough defensive schedule. Those are great stats for 1991.

The bears had the best defense ever.

Never really that into lists like this, but even more so something that says the ‘72 dolphins are the best team ever. The 2007 patriots would beat that team by 30 points.

The '73 Dolphins would beat the '72 Dolphins by 30 points.

The number 1 team is totally wrong. The 1972 Miami Dolphins beat up a cupcake schedule. Undefeated? Yes. Best of all time? No way.
and you won't be saying anything about how great this years's patriots are

C'mon guys. By the logic of our site, all that matters is record and SB's.

Personally, I agree that the 2007 patriots, and lots of other of the top 10 would have beaten the 1972 dolphins.

And yes, I believe that 2007 team was higher than #7.

Many (most?) posters would put the 2007 teams below every patriot SB winner. Actually, by their logic, the team should be behind EVERY Super Bowl winning team.

After all, the 2007 team was a failure, no better than the 2019 Bengals. I believe that someone posted this attitude just last week.

Obviously, the list over-rates the 1972 dolphins. HOWEVER, the rest is a reasonable effort. Super Bowl wins are NOT, are NOT, are NOT all that counts.

Everyone has their own definition of great.
Personally I value the SB win because it’s the goal. No team sets out to be great in the regular season and fail in the playoffs.
Quite the opposite. I think the 2007 patriots would have traded 16-0 and a SB loss for 9-7 and a SB win and I don’t think any SB winner would trade their title for a 16-0 season and a SB loss.
I think you have to define “best” in relation to the goals. The first goal is winning the SB. Whether you do that with 0 or 7 losses it’s still accomplishing the goal, something no team that doesn’t win the SB accomplishes.
Personally I put the 2007 Patriots at best not to win a Sb which ranks them behind every SB winner.
I recognize other people have other definitions of best including subjectively rating talent, or guessing at who would win in a matchup, but mine definition is based the roles being set up as the goal of every team is first and foremost To win the SB and every else is secondary, not irrelevant, but less important

They’re the most famous defense ever, not the best just IMO

Then you didn’t watch them. If you have a chance go back and watch their post season.
