Refs moved the chains for Ravens several times. This non-call was especially irksome.

Curious how a play like this is any less “egregious” than the Saints-Rams one?

I was shrieking at the TV for BB to challenge that obvious illegal pick play. WTF?

First of all I agree that to me this is OPI. Lets just establish that.

Now.. What is it ? A 16% success rate on PI challenges ?

You gotta weigh the value of timeouts in the second half in a -- at that point -- tight game over a long shot chance of getting a PI call via flag. Even if it is 4th down.

And while I am aware that flags on picks have been more successful than all other types I am really not sure this was blatant enough to hit the high threshold for reversal.

While I completely get your point I think the difference is that with this pick play we are arguing technicalities of the rule. Was the Ravens receiver simply running his route and it was well timed ? Did he slow down or stop enough for it to be blatant ? Could JMac have gone underneath ?

With the Rams-Saints play there is not much subtlety to consider really.

Again, personally I think it was OPI but it is a lot more nuanced in terms of rules than what happened in New Orleans.

Why should Belichick have wasted a timeout to challenge that, given the way PI calls almost never get reversed no matter how bad they are?

In fairness, OPI gets reversed more often and the team was in need of a spark. I thought even a slim chance of getting that overturned was worth the investment.

The previous 4 defensive possessions were PUNT, FUMBLE, PUNT, END OF HALF. The offense was slicing through Baltimore and we would have been most probably up if Edelman had not given away a TD with his fumble.

I understand if someone thinks the chance to make it 4th & 19 would have been totally worth the gamble to lose a TO in a close game. But I am not so sure I agree with "they needed a spark".

Because it was...unless you're using Reese Bobby's definition of Egregious.


Besides, I blame JMac & JCJack (and/or the coaches) for playing so close to the LOS that they allowed themselves to be picked.

Fair enough. "Need a spark" might have been the wrong choice of words, but I felt like Baltimore still had control of the game and that NE's defense, despite the improvement, also hadn't quite gotten things under control. How the game unfolded after Baltimore went up again by two scores was not a surprise.

Add in the fact that the play happened on 4th down - meaning the degree of influence a potential reversal had on that drive was high - and I though it was worth the risk.

That's fair.

I still think that this is not a straight forward decision to make based on the historical reversal pattern when it comes to PI flags. I don't think we need to discuss how big the loss of one TO in a close game can be in the end.

Also given how disgusted BB seemed to be last year with KC's pick play I would assume he shares a pretty low tolerance for such blatant attempts so him not throwing a flag in spite of it goes imo to show what his opinion about challenging PI calls is right now.

I am sure they send this scene to the NFL office this week for clarification.
