So the Patriots currently have three players - Harry, Wynn and Develin that are on IR and potentially any two of those could be designated to return. They have a decision to make, potentially as early as this week.

Here are the rules:

At any time after six weeks have elapsed since a player was placed on Reserve/Injured or Reserve/Non-Football Injury/Illness, each club is permitted to designate two players for return from either list to the club’s 53-player Active/Inactive List.
...
A player whom the club wishes to designate for return is permitted to return to practice for a period not to exceed 21 days. The club is required to notify the League office that the player has been “Designated For Return” on the first day the player begins to practice. The player cannot be returned to the Active/Inactive List until eight weeks have elapsed since the date he was placed on Reserve.

So we are coming up to 6 weeks from when Harry was placed on IR (September 2nd) - that means that if the Patriots wish, they could designate him to return this coming week (after Oct 14). They would then have a maximum of three weeks to activate him, and he could play any time after two weeks of practice.

Wynn was placed on IR on September 17, so he is about two weeks behind Harry. If we assume he is guaranteed a slot, then it's between Develin and Harry for the second slot. Develin (September 23) is about a week back from Wynn.

So there are two issues here - first, which is more valuable to the team, Develin or Harry, and second whether Develin's neck injury is a temporary or more lasting injury.

If we assume Harry's turf toe is better by now, then if we don't see him activated this week it means they are hankering over Develin instead.

I guess the trade deadline plays into this too - if they get another receiver that lessens the need for Harry. Can Damien Harris perhaps play fullback?

Thoughts?

we will have the answer who will show up to practice at a certain date.

That being said, Develin is very unlikely to return this season according to Reiss.

Even if Develin was healthy enough to return this year, I think Harry is more important. I don't want to downplay Develin's impact, but we can't have #80 playing as many snaps as he did Thursday.

Wynn, Harry and hopefully Dwayne Allen FA if he’s over his injury.

WR corps of Gordon, Edelman, Dorsett, Harry and Meyers. (they had 2 of those 5 in last game)

Wynn/Thuney/Karras/Mason/Cannon/Allen

Combined with that overwhelming D should work well.

The only wildcard is injuries - but that goes for any team.

FWIW, he did imply that is his opinion, not reporting. Reiss is a great reporter, but not a great prognosticator. I'm not saying Develin is definitely coming back, but it's not out of the question ATM, especially now that Johnson is joining him.

When Dorsett and Gordon are healthy, Myers will again be the #4 WR.

Harry may or may not be an upgrade at this point in the season. Even if there is an upgrade,
1) Develin would be more of an upgrade, and
2) we could trade for a WR who should be an upgrade to Meyers by the time of the playoffs.

BOTTOM LINE FOR ME IS
the health of Dorsett, Gordon, and Develin.

As an aside, we all presume that Harry is 100% recovered from his turf toe injury.

I don't see it happening mostly because I think that injury is serious and a season ender.

You are assuming Develin would be more valuable/more of an upgrade. You don't know it.

I'm not "assuming" anything.

I believe that a healthy Develin will add more than a healthy Harry's upgrade over Meyers.

And just BTW, I don't think that it's close at all. Of course, if either Dorsett or Gordon needs to be put on IR, we have a different situation.

I'm OK with Edelman, Dorsett, Gordon and Meyers, perhaps plus an acquisition.

Sadly I agree. I’m more concerned that it be just the season that it ends.

Yes. In 2017 the Pats designated Shea McClellin to return from injured reserve but he never made it to the active roster, so they lost one opportunity to bring a player back. I'm sure they don't want to make that mistake again.

Personally, I have high hopes of Harry as a difference-maker. I think he would be a significant upgrade over Olszewski as a punt returner, for example.

How did harry do returning punts in the pre-season?

Unless an injury is season ending I doubt any of them (or anyone else of consequence) is headed to IR

Won't happen.

Harry didn't do any significant PR work in preseason.

Gun is entrenched at PR and he should be

Harry may or may not be an upgrade at this point in the season.

Harry is not a trade or a player from the street but someone who spent almost the entire offseason and preseason with the team. I don't understand this "may not be an upgrade" angle here.

He lost some time in the first part of the regular season but it is not like there is too much depth in front of him where he won't even get snaps.

He will be productive and a key cog if health permits.
