Fitzpatrick, Reid fit the mold at safety

11th Pick in the 2018 draft out of Alabama. Had a strong rookie year but he and Flores had not hit it off.

Minkah Fitzpatrick Contract Details, Salary Cap Charges, Bonus Money, and Contract History | Over The Cap

Could be a good addition to this years team if used properly and as soon as next year could be a starter at FS, depending upon McCourty’s 2019 production and retirement plans. Chiefs are likely to be interested, so blocking them from acquiring much needed secondary help would be a bonus.

Patriots get Fitzpatrick and a 5th
Dolphins get 2nd and a 4th

@BaconGrundleCandy was unbelievably high of Minkah when he was coming out of Bama.

If the dolphins are okay with a 2nd rounder and a 4th like you’ve said then it would be a good deal for us.

For some teams they may settle for a 2, for the pats that price is likely a 1.

I don’t know what it would take, just throwing that out there. Perhaps if BB loves him he would be willing to give up their 1st rounder next year. He surely knows all of his strength and warts, given his familiarity with Alabama players. Trades within the division usually cost more, as we all know. They would need to draft or sign their next starting SS this offseason, so it’s definitely worth considering, IMO. He also has some positional versatility, a well known BB favorite trait, although it sounds like Flores has gone a little bit overboard in this regard and may have overwhelmed a young player trying to learn a new system.

2018 NFL All-Rookie Team, defense: Who'll win DROY?

Not a prototypical "island" cornerback along the lines of Ward and Alexander, Fitzpatrick is a new-school corner capable of excelling in the slot and at safety while moonlighting outside the numbers. With the exception of his schooling at the hands of Raiders veteran Jordy Nelson in late September, Fitzpatrick has been one of Miami's most valuable defenders. He's allowing a minuscule passer rating of 49.6 from the slot, per PFF, beating out the Broncos' Chris Harris(57.3), the Texans' Kareem Jackson (68.3), the Chargers' Desmond King (69.0) and the Bears' Bryce Callahan (78.9).

Would be very dumb for them to deal him here.

Everyone is available for the right price.

It would be interesting to see what happens. If it was a 2nd and a 4th then I’d do it. I have no idea how he would fit in our Secondary or where he would play.

Nothing screams Patriots like a player who complains about playing multiple roles for a Belichick-tree coach. Promising player at Alabama, but they hid a lot of his deficiencies, which are now more regularly exposed. I'd rather keep our secondary as it is.

That never stopped any of the other three AFC East teams from acting that way before in recent years............ Look at the number of draft picks used on QBs in Miami......

I don't see a current need for him.

Pats may have the best package of DBs this decade. I didn’t think Fitzpatrick’s pure man coverage skills were all that coming out of Alabama. He isn’t seeing the field over J. Jones or Chung in the slot. No thanks.

I’m not sure that I follow. He had a strong rookie year and at the beginning of the off-season was thought to be one of their building blocks for the future. It sounds as though Flores and the coaching staff perhaps put too much on his plate. And when you say that his deficiencies are “now are more regularly exposed” are you talking about week 1 of this season, because it does not sound like he was exposed regularly during his rookie year?

The Flores designed defense just gave up 59 points, 325 yards passing and 5 passing TDs to a team led by a quarterback who averaged fewer than 180 yards passing per game last year during his 7 games as a starter. During those seven games, Jackson threw a total of six passing TDs. How do we know that Belichick did not hide a lot of Flores’ deficiencies, which were exposed week 1? That is not fair to Flores but it is similarly unfair to seemingly dismiss Fitzpatrick as a first round mistake based upon one horrific game playing in a new system for a team that is a dumpster fire right now. It is very possible that Belichick would handle Fitzpatrick very differently.

For a lot of reasons it likely won’t happen but talking about at a minimum serves as a brief diversion from the Antonio Brown.

PFF pointed like him as a coverage guy but also pointed out his tackling issues. If there is one thing BB hates on defense it is missed tackles. While some of us may believe BB can coach him up a part of me doesn't believe that.

Is there something BB knows about basic tackle techniques the rest of the world doesn't? I don't believe so. You should know how to do that by now. Then again maybe those were just rookie jitters or trying to do too much. I would be happy to trade for him for the right price. Not because they need him this year but because next year I think at least one of our safeties walk.

Everyone is available for the right price.

That's a catchy line.

Doesn't work for a mountain climber who's been unsuccessfully attempting to climb a mountain for 20 years, to suddenly hit a button to make that mountain a few thousand feet higher.

The Dolphins would never trade him to the Patriots (especially with 3 years remaining on his rookie contract).

Remember: They are focused on tanking THIS year. Not the next 5-10.

I agree that this is not a necessary addition for 2019 but the McCourty brother could easily be gone after this season, either through retirement or release. You are then left with a gaping hole at SS. Harmon is a useful player who often come up big in big situations, but I don’t see him as the future starting SS.

IF BB and Pats scouts view Fitzpatrick as a potential long-term starter as a SS, with some position versatility and the ability to cover the slot, you are just filling that hole a year early and allowing the player to learn the system so he, theoretically, would hit the ground running in 2020. His salary cap hit this year is reasonable and they would have him under control for an additional three years, assuming the fifth year option gets picked up. I don’t know about his special teams abilities. As for questions about his coverage ability, McCourty had major struggles his second year, prior to his conversion to safety and it took years for Chung to hone his covered skills. Fitzpatrick had a strong year overall in coverage as a rookie and is almost sure to improve in that regard as he matures and improves his technique.

A little bit more about him:

Why the Eagles should trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick

If the Patriots offered multiple high round draft picks or multiple first rounders, they certainly would trade him.

Again, every player is available for the right price. In most cases, the right price is never met.

If the Patriots outbid every other team, the Dolphins would trade him to NE, in my opiniom. This is not going to be a 1 to 2 year rebuild in Miami. They are likely hoping to contend 2022 at the earliest. If they have a couple of offers which are similar to the Pats offer, I agree they would send him elsewhere. It would probably have to be a scenario in which the Patriots are the only team offering a first round pick.

Id rather have kept Crossen than trade for him

The biggest impact of this on the Patriots is that the Dolphins might sit him this weekend if they think they can trade him first thing next week.
