I think either D. Thomas or Meyers makes the team, and the other doesn’t. I know this opinion isn’t popular, but both have big question marks, and considering that neither is an athletic freak or deep threat, they would be filling a similar spot.
On Thomas, his contract gives them an out with almost no loss, and he’ll cost a decent amount on a per game roster basis if they do keep him. Nothing we know if indicates any change of thinking for the Patriots when they did the contract (release him if he is physically done, which may be the case for a guy who was already declining before an Achilles injury.)
On Meyers, that was very concerning that he and Brady were so out of sync. We’ve seen Tom just freeze guys out after that happens, and there are a lot of WR options.
I predict Thomas is cut, but I know I’m in the minority. I don’t think his upside justifies keeping him when Meyers is younger, quicker, cheaper, and on a multi-year deal. This isn’t 2014 D. Thomas, and these aren’t the same WR-poor Patriots as when they signed him in February. Since then, along with Meyers, they’ve seen Dorsett improve with Brady, Gordon optimistically (but cautiously) return, and Harry drafted in the first round.
