Mike Pennel released

Mike Pennel will be infamous on this board. Most of us, myself included, overrated the guy.

There should be a Mt. Rushmore of Never-Was for this team. Who would it be? Adam Seward, Mike Pennel, Larry Fitzgerald, and one more...

Yes, it is possible that Parry beat out Pennel. We have seen nothing great from him, so this would mean (to me) that Belichick will be looking at the wire and at trades.

I have no idea who Thurman is. You made me consult our lads. :)

Munson is a LB and Cowart is a DE. But yes, both are likely to have beaten out Pennel for a roster spot.

This doesn't solve the need for 3 biggies (at least 315 plus) that some of us see.

Couldn't it just be the case that Shelton, Parry and Thurman simply beat Pennell out?

What great things would you have expected to see from Parry in preseason games. All he needs to do is clog the middle. That’s hard to see in a preseason game if you aren’t looking specifically for it.

Not in the base defense on early downs.
He won’t be filling a role previously filled by dts.
It depends on the situation and the offense they are facing.

Ok other teams; release some fatties so we can eat!

He will move inside on some obvious passing downs. There is nothing we have ever done in defense to suggest he will play regularly as a DT. No player of his size ever has.
The fact that we are a nickel base makes it even more preposterous.
You are in Lacosse is a WR mode here so it would be best for us to just move on.

I was referring to Nick Thurman who is currently on the roster. The Pat's official depth chart listed him as a DE. But then again the Pats official depth chart at Patriots.com also lists Mike Pennell as a starter. ;)

Anyhow, I remember seeing Thurman, who is 305 listed among DT's one time. Perhaps a better choice as a 2nd DT to watch would have been perennial PS guy Ufomba Kamalu. Hard to keep track of all 90 guys. I guess you should have gone directly to the source. ;)

That's fine.

Again, issue is you are hung up on and formal titles and positions and not taking into consideration what the player is doing down to down and game to game

If in a particular game Bennett lines up aside Guy on the inside and say KVN or Simon is to his outside 20 times a game in that instance he is a DT.

If you still want to call him a DE, go ahead.

Same w LaCosse lining up wide and Chung in the box.

In the first 2 playoff games we got big leads. In the Sb we just played lights out.
We were 29th in ypc and gave up 150+ on the ground 5 times, 4 of them losses.

Yes. It wasn't a great run-stuffing defence, that's for sure. I remember the Vikings' running back (Dalvin Cook?) tore them up, but, if memory serves, a lot of that was outside the tackles.

I’d agree if it was just the game but he is playing 3rd string snaps in practice.

Atleast Pennel is consistent because that continued in the Preseason games.

Oops, I was wrong, really thought he'd do well here.

One thing to note, and it surprised me when I saw it, is that Kamalu has been playing 3-4 OLB for us.

I don't know, but at least one sack I saw this preseason definitely came from 1 tech. He seemed to line up at 1 or 3 a fair amount.

Passing down when the fat guys take a seat......flowers did it, long did it......

“Much better acquisition than Shelton, etc, etc”

*crickets*

Joey Galloway, Ochocinco, Reggie Wayne, John Lynch, Mike Gillislee…. some exciting names that never really panned out.

That's fine.

No I am not at all caught up in naming positions. I’m talking about roles and the type of players that got the role.
When we play nickel base EXCLUSIVE OF 3rd AND LONG we play 2 300lb DTs. We always have and we must. We need big DTs because we are short a lb on the run game.
We need 3 of those guys because they have d to rotate. Michael Bennett cannot effectively play that role. He can’t play over the g and be expected to take on double teams in the running game.
We also need at least one very stout DE. That’s is Bennett. Wise is really the only other option at that spot.

When it’s 3rd and long we often move a DE inside. That is Bennett. That’s a different role and is totally separate from the players that play DT in base nickel.

If in a particular game Bennett lines up aside Guy on the inside and say KVN or Simon is to his outside 20 times a game in that instance he is a DT.
We have never, ever done that before. Unless there are 20 3rd and longs (or 2 minute drill where we sometimes use it)
How in the world are we going to defend he run from nickel with the entire DL playing a position bigger than they are.
You want a 300 lb NT a 275 lb DT and a 240 lb DE. We would get destroyed.

If you still want to call him a DE, go ahead.
He is a DE. That’s the point.

Same w LaCosse lining up wide and Chung in the box.
TEs split out safeties okay in the box. That doesn’t make them different players. A TE split out is not defended the same as a WR. A S in the box is less effective vs the run and more effective vs the pass than a lb. that’s why there is a difference.

Bennett will play like a DT once in a while. But he will do it in situations where run defending DTs are off the field because of down and distance. Back to the beginning of the discussion. Bennett will see zero of the snaps Pennel would have seem. That is the point.

The DT position was not a strength last year and it appears weaker this year.

Possible replacement at whom I wouldn't mind seeing Bill take a look:
