The Question Mark Positions: WR and TE

None of us have a clue with regard to who will our leading receivers for the year, other than EDELMAN. HARRY is a lock, and should be a solid addition in whatever roles he is able to learn well. WATSON should be in the top group. Two of the RB's should be among our top receivers,

Well, that's five.

It seems likely that we will keep 7-8 WR and TE's. We all have our choices and our binkies. It would seems that we need a couple of the WR's and TE to be among our top 7 receivers. And we need a couple of backups.

Kendricks could beat out lacosse. One of the TEs will probably be whoever is the best blocker (or we only keep 2 and TE3 is an OL*)
I think a dark horse is Anderson. He played the must snaps of any te in Houston in 2017 (though still less than 450) and caught 25 passes which is good production for that playing time.
He is a very small te but he is very athletic and is far more capable of threatening the seam than anyone The at te position including Watson.
I could easily see a “regular” TE plus a blocking TE plus Anderson trying to fill all the TE roles by committee. I also think we will have fewer TE snaps this year than any year in memory.


* I wonder if there is another Vrabel on the roster? If they can catch Hightower, Collins and KVN would all be intriguing goalline TE3 possibilities.

What you say is true. On the asterisk : I hear you and I remember cheering hard when Vrabel would catch a TD... but GEEEEZ those LBs are crucial and I’d hate to see any of them get injured playing on O. Of course - that is why BB is where he is (not by playing it safe).

I’m wondering if we haven’t used the lb at te role because TE has been a very important piece of that scheme since 2010 so we always had depth while I feel this year it’s going to be minimized so we may only keep 2.

Agreed. No matter how promising and talented Wynn is (and I have high hopes for him), it is simply unreasonable to expect that he can simultaneously recover after only a year from something as serious as an Achilles tear AND, for the first time, get used to NFL players and speed while he is still recovering from the injury. It is a completely different situation than when a veteran suffers that type of injury.

I expect Thuney to open the season as LT. If Wynn can slowly be worked in for some snaps at LG early in the year and then at about mid-year start taking some snaps at LT with some degree of effectiveness I would consider that an almost ideal situation.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Thuney plays most of the year at LT and Wynn takes over at LT next year when Thuney signs the first $20M/year OL contract with Houston.

I think people are sleeping on LaCosse. He's never going to be a Pro Bowler but he is a decent player and I think if Gronk were here then he would be compared to Allen and everyone would say upgrade. Hopefully he gels with TB and takes the next step in his career.

This topic does seem to be generating a lot of comments and concern. We do seem to be light on experience after Edelman and are having to deal with life after Gronk. If things don't work out does this open up the chances of a trade ?

Yeah my first thought was also that tackle is a much more pressing need than WR or TE. I'm genuinely not worried about our receivers. I'm a little worried about our run blocking from the tight end position because we really need to be able to run at will in a post-Gronk world.

fair enough. It is looking more and more like Thuney will start at LT, although Wynn could still be the starter. The Skipper seems destined to make the 53, at least for awhile. This position is probably the most likely position for a trade or late pickup.

WR seems to be looking OK with Edelman, Harry, Harris and Dorsett. That's not bad considering that we have the possibility of Thomas and/or Gordon, plus potential practice squad players Berrios and Myers.

If Kendricks is even a journeyman, then we are OK with Watson, LeCosse and Kendricks. Anderson should make the 53 and be given 4 weeks.

Looking good but let's see the next phase of scrimmages then games

On one hand, I know we haven't seen so much as a preseason snap from Mo Harris.
On the other hand, I'm wracking my brain for examples of veteran receivers who joined the Patriots and seemed to instantly click into the offense and find rapport with Brady in TC, who then amounted to nothing. Or, come to think of it, examples of vet WRs who seemed to flail helplessly when learning the offense in camp, but who totally locked in later. When it comes to vets and this system, early signs are pretty predictive.

I'm calling Harris a lock.
