No one knows anything about Gronk and his thinking about retirement other than those really close to him, but tell me Dr. SammyBlueCat why Gronk is definitively retired. He has already said there is a possibility of a comeback depending on how he feels next year.

I can see where Vollmer is coming from, OL are expected to maintain their size. The difference is that Gronk could, at least in theory, come back as a move TE that still creates size mismatches. He doesn’t have to come back at 270 he could come back at 250 and still get it done. I’m not saying that will happen, but unlike Vollmer Gronk can shapeshift and still play in the NFL.

He is retired because he said he is retired so the team moved him from the roster to the "reserve retired" and received salary cap relief from the league. These facts have already been shared on this site so you need to look them up. As of today he is definitively retired. That is a fact...

He can legally apply for reinstatement. He is not a free agent and the Patriots retain his rights.

Gronk had taken an absolute beating over his career, so you certainly can’t blame him (or any athlete, for that matter) for prioritizing his health.

You quote Sebastian Vollmer as a source for why he isn’t coming back and then tell me I can’t find quotes from former players who have the opposite opinion. Here is Gronk saying he may feel differently once the season starts...and his agent even said that he wouldn’t be surprised for a return if Brady gives him a call.

Of course he’s taking care of his back. That doesn’t mean that this eliminates any possibility of him playing next year. The quote you posted from that article indicates he is still lifting weights, so your assumption that he is not working out is false. He’s lost maybe 10-15 pounds, which is not the end of the world.

I am open minded yet I want you to find him actually uttering the words himself since at this time HE IS RETIRED and anyone that states otherwise is simply offering a speculative opinion. His agent has not stated otherwise - he stated "he would not be shocked" if Gronk played again. That was the day after retiring however he concedes that at this time his client is not interested. And any player who himself says there is a possibility of a comeback (along with what his agent says) is not 100% retired. The fact that he was injured numerous times before does not mean he won't make a comeback either. Perhaps it makes it less likely, but it does not preclude his returning. And you are again making the assumption that I think he's definitely coming back...I am not. I am merely leaving open the possibility and you are not. None of us are privy to what Gronk is thinking. The fact that he told Brees "he's coming back" should not be left unnoticed.

Retirement papers are a total red herring either way, since they can be trivially revoked. Filing papers in no way prevents a player from coming out of retirement. Nor does filing them terminate a team's rights to the retired player.
