vollmer is making his opinion based on Gronk’s apparent “weight loss” in a recent photo. all i’m saying no one knows how much weight he actually lost. no one has seen him with his shirt off in recent months. for all we know the photo could have been photoshopped. Gronk himself says he’s lost 15 pounds, which is not as alarming as we all thought. he can gain that back over the next few months.

With all due respect, we do not know if Vollmer has had a serious conversation with Gronk. None of us do. However please let us know when or if Gronk starts to make an effort to get into "football shape".

No one knows anything about Gronk and his thinking about retirement other than those really close to him, but tell me Dr. SammyBlueCat why Gronk is definitively retired. He has already said there is a possibility of a comeback depending on how he feels next year.

I can see where Vollmer is coming from, OL are expected to maintain their size. The difference is that Gronk could, at least in theory, come back as a move TE that still creates size mismatches. He doesn’t have to come back at 270 he could come back at 250 and still get it done. I’m not saying that will happen, but unlike Vollmer Gronk can shapeshift and still play in the NFL.

Wow - I guess some people love going in circles. He is retired because he said he is retired so the team moved him from the roster to the "reserve retired" and received salary cap relief from the league. These facts have already been shared on this site so you need to look them up. As of today he is definitively retired. That is a fact...

He can legally apply for reinstatement. He is not a free agent and the Patriots retain his rights.
Is that the concession you want?

He is losing weight because he is not putting in the effort to train for an NFL season.

When did he state that he may come back? Please share.
Talk show hosts and other former players do not count.

    https://nypost.com/2019/07/16/rob-gronkowskis-post-retirement-transformation-continues/

So he is in great shape however he is concerned about his back.

By the way, why would someone photoshop his picture???

The Pats 3 TEs who arent all that impressive and Ben Watson [IMG]

If Gronk comes back tomorrow, he takes the top spot and bumps one of the JAGs out.

Having Bradys trust is money in the bank. Hope is not a plan. The hologram Dorsett has been a Pat for almost 2 years and Brady does not go to him for spells during the season.

No one is saying Gronk isn’t retired. The question is whether that retirement is permanent. You are making the false assumption that Gronk is 100% retired. We don’t know. None of us know. He himself said there is a possibility of a comeback if he has the itch. And the hypocrisy here is amazing. You quote Sebastian Vollmer as a source for why he isn’t coming back and then tell me I can’t find quotes from former players who have the opposite opinion. Here is Gronk saying he may feel differently once the season starts...and his agent even said that he wouldn’t be surprised for a return if Brady gives him a call.

Rob Gronkowski is enjoying retirement, but admits he doesn't know how he'll feel when Patriots season starts

Of course he’s taking care of his back. That doesn’t mean that this eliminates any possibility of him playing next year. The quote you posted from that article indicates he is still lifting weights, so your assumption that he is not working out is false. He’s lost maybe 10-15 pounds, which is not the end of the world.

Give me a break…. He is 100% retired. There is no such thing as partial retirement in the NFL.
I conceded that there is a process to be reinstated however at this time he has not attempted to do that.

    Your question was:

    He is definitively retired.

You dismissed Sebastian Vollmer and that is your choice. I chose to dismiss Willie McGinest. That is not hypcocrisy. I am open minded yet I want you to find him actually uttering the words himself since at this time HE IS RETIRED and anyone that states otherwise is simply offering a speculative opinion. His agent has not stated otherwise - he stated "he would not be shocked" if Gronk played again. That was the day after retiring however he concedes that at this time his client is not interested. He later went on to say :

done done done does not = I want to rest and then play again

Gronk is 'done, done, done,' not interested in coming back midseason, agent says

Gronk's agent even tried to negotiate sitting out of training camp and Gronk said NO

Agent: Rob Gronkowski Rejected Plan to Sit Out Training Camp Before Retirement

Rob Gronkowski is enjoying retirement, but admits he doesn't know how he'll feel when Patriots season starts

Interesting article. "He does not know how he will feel" does Not = I will come back and play.
    More vague speculation.

You need to re-read my posts. I did not assume he is not working out. I said:

    And

The injuries he has sustained and the rehabilitation associated with them are painful...

By the way, I am not vilifying Gronk for walking away nor am I vilifying fans that want him back.
He is a beloved figure in New England.

Sorry, no player has the intention of being 100% retired unless they file retirement papers with the NFL. And any player who himself says there is a possibility of a comeback (along with what his agent says) is not 100% retired. The fact that he was injured numerous times before does not mean he won't make a comeback either. Perhaps it makes it less likely, but it does not preclude his returning. And you are again making the assumption that I think he's definitely coming back...I am not. I am merely leaving open the possibility and you are not. None of us are privy to what Gronk is thinking. The fact that he told Brees "he's coming back" should not be left unnoticed.

He told his agent he was " done done done".

Your tone suggests that you believe he is coming back
so I am forced to concede that "forever" is a long time.

I am suggesting that he will not come back even if he feels good because it
would not take very long for him to not feel good. He does not want to throw
himself back into the fire so to speak.

I wish there was a way to make a bet using this site.
    Nothing serious just lunch.
I could win a bunch of lobstah...

Retirement papers are a total red herring either way, since they can be trivially revoked. Filing papers in no way prevents a player from coming out of retirement. Nor does filing them terminate a team's rights to the retired player.
