Uh-oh. Looks like the NFL is seriously considering the 18/16 concept

Are kickers and punters exempt? Or will there be spare kickers made available for when they have to sit?

Have to figure at a minimum kickers, punters, long snappers would be exempt. Between the star power and the rules protecting them it would make sense to exempt QBs as well

Rob Gronkowski and Josh Gordon will need the time off.

I guess I'm more open minded, because of all the 18 game scenarios I've seen, this is actually the one that makes the most sense, imho. Of course exempting QB's and kicking specialists make some sense, but I wouldn't be adverse is EVERYONE on the roster gets 2 games off. Other tweaks that I think would be necessary to get this done is to expand the 53 man roster to say 56 as well as the game day roster to say, 48-50

As far as the fans go, I think it would be fascinating to talk about the rosters going into each game. Who plays and doesn't would make for great discussions as well thinking about the 20-2o hindsight thought after the game.

Bottom line- line Turkeyneck made an excellent point. If this idea went through it would ratchet up the complexity of the game as well as putting a premium on good coaching, 2 areas when the Pats EXCEL. Building a deeper roster filled with a lot of mid level quality players would become more important and that's what the Pats have been doing for YEARS I'm fine with any changes that give the Pats an advantage.

The NFL is eventually going to get its 18 game season. Adding the 2 game exemption, the extended rosters, and more money should get it past the PA. For fans its more strategy and discussion points which makes the game more interesting.

If I had my druthers, I'd stay at 16, but if 18 games is an eventuality, this is a pretty way to implement it.

I don't believe they are serious about this proposal, they are just trying to use it as some sort of bargaining chip. They have to know that this would be an absolute disaster. You wouldn't be able to plan a TV schedule and primetime games when you never know if you're going to see Brady or Hoyer, Rodgers or DeShone, Baker or Tyrod...

The next day, Coach Dungy called after the show with another important observation: Some fans will revolt against an 18/16 approach. For example, this year the Browns play at Arizona in Week 15; it’s Cleveland’s once-per-eight-years trip to the desert. Browns fans in Phoenix who want (and who paid) to see Baker Mayfield, Odell Beckham, and Jarvis Landry play would be upset if they found out 90 minutes before kickoff that one or more of them is healthy, but not playing.

For many years the Patriots have done an exceptional job at roster building however Coach Bill is not getting any younger.

Just some crybabies trying to figure out how to (once again) level the playing field between the Pats and the rest of the NFL. When your team has the games greatest player of course the losers want to devise a rule to get him off the field. Duh....
I doubt it has anything to do with that. This is all about $$$

I told ya! Jerrah always gets what he wants! When I heard Jerrah was involved in CBA talks. I knew it was/is just a matter of time. Looking forward to 16 team playoffs in the future, not!

I just realized the side affect of this. It's going to over inflate the already over inflated QB market. Now backup QB's are going to be pushing 10-15 million a season. Ridiculous!

Jesus Mary Mother of God.....

How much thought do these people actually spend on hatching these hair-brained ideas? 5 minutes?
Less than that. It's all about that $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If the idjit owners have their hearts set on an 18-week season, then have an 18-week season season with every team getting 2 byes so each team plays 16 games. (Yes, I know, they want the extra 2 weeks of gate and so want 18 actual games per team.)
Idiot owners? Oh no, you are mistaken sir. The owners are highly intelligent when it comes to dealing with the NFLPA and their players. The players cave so fast to demands. Most of the players have no backbone to go on strike for several years to get some fairness. They desperate for that $$$$$$$ almost as much as the owners. And the owners know this! Not so dumb after all! ;)

Can you imagine this? Top tier teams are suddenly facing only scrubs on a weekly basis becuase why play your best when you have a low chance of victory? You'll have your best teams forced-resting their players in Primetime games. Every top tier team will find itself exclusively playing backup quarterbacks.
Lol! can you imagine almost every team resting their best players against the Patriots. Would be too funny. :p

Edit: @PatsDeb beat me to it! :p

If this idiot scheme actually happens, I could see basically conceding your first two non-conference games by playing all scrubs to get it all out of the way. Then you can play the other games with the players you want playing as opposed to probably always having at least some person out you don't want to be out.

Just wait until a team decides to rest all of its star players in a marquee game on a Sunday night to prove a point. I'm sure the league would LOVE that

Lolololololololololololololololololol

Sean Payton/BB would get lifetime bans ffs.

Something I just thought about: considering how tiebreakers go, the least important games on the schedule are a team's 4 non conference opponents. The rarest games in the NFL would be the smartest times to sit players. So if this rule had existed all along, in theory, a matchup like Brady vs. Rodgers never happens. That in no way is good for the NFL.
