David Ortiz shot in The Dominican

Don't know exactly what to say. That clip was a hard thing to watch.

If good thoughts have ANY healing power then David is in good hands. He certainly will get millions of them over the next few days...and longer.

Glad he's coming back to Boston. There aren't finer medical facilities in the world than what we have here.

No knowing the WHY of it will frustrate most of us, but there is nothing we can do about it until it becomes known.

This tragedy got me thinking about a book that was popular in the early 80's. "When bad things happen to Good people". By EVERY account David is a very good person. So Why? The book was published in 1981 and was a comfort to be at a very bad time in my life. What happened to David got me thinking about the book and I looked up a quote that I thought might be appropriate when things like this happen, whether its David or any random tragedy that makes no sense and seems so unfair. Kushner sums up his thoughts this way:

"Is there an answer to the question of why bad things happen to good people? That depends on what we mean by 'answer'. If we mean 'Is there an explanation which will make sense of it all?'… then there probably is no satisfying answer. We can offer learned explanations, but in the end, when we have covered all the squares on the game board and are feeling very proud of our cleverness, the pain and the anguish and the sense of unfairness will still be there. But the word 'answer' can also mean 'response' as well as 'explanation,' and in that sense, there may well be a satisfying answer to the tragedies in our lives. The response would be Job's response in MacLeish's version of the biblical story—to forgive the world for not being perfect, to forgive God for not making a better world, to reach out to the people around us, and to go on living despite it all.

Ortiz is reportedly being transported to Boston for treatment and recovery

Report: Sox bringing Ortiz to Boston

"UPDATE (1:05 p.m. ET): A Red Sox plane has landed in the Dominican Republic and authorities have authorized permission for Ortiz to be transported to Boston "immediately"

Great job by the Red Sox ownership.

Just as long as it is not the Red Sox medical staff that cares for him.
nah they are fine now that Thomas Gill is working at a CVS.

Just came back from lunch (I like to eat early) and on the radio, people calling with connections to the DR saying the hit wasn't for Ortiz, but some DJ/rapper down there sitting near Ortiz?

From the video it seems like Ortiz is the target but I guess that's the gossip among the DR public.. fwiw
It could have been intended for the guy Ortiz is talking to, facing the shooter.

Why is Ortiz walking around in a crazy country like DR without security protection?
Um...it's his home and he's worshipped like a god there?

This makes the most sense of anything I've heard from this so far.

Even an avowed Sox and MLB hater like me has a soft spot for Ortiz. Hard to imagine him being the target of a hit. A robbery, sure, but a hit just seemed weird.

Why hate the Red Sox? James White doesn't hate the Red Sox. Tom Brady loves the Red Sox just as much as he loves Hentia.

Because as a kid I was always a contrarian little ****. In fact the only reason I'm a Pats fan is because I turned on the a MIA game and decided to root for the Pats because the Dolphins had recently been in the SB and in the 80s nobody cared about the Pats and they were the underdogs in the game (to say the least) and were losing so I started rooting for them to make a comeback, IIRC they made the game close but didn't win.

But even my heart has been melted by Ortiz.

UK Daily Mail says a hit ordered by a local drug lord who thought Ortiz was having an affair with his wife.

Interesting but I mean, it's the Daily Mail...

Still, that's something I hadn't thought of. When you think of a hit in the DR you immediately think of gang/drug violence and it was hard to imagine Ortiz being wrapped up in that.

The story has been picked up by numerous US outlets. Ortiz’s spokesman said it was hired gunmen (two) - denies it was about a woman.

If it's true and he really was the target then he is lucky as hell, holy crap.

That was my thought exactly. I mean, it sure seems consistent with a drug-related hit to me, but I do not believe for a single second Ortiz is involved in any of that. Ortiz is so rich, he would have to be one of the biggest drug lords in the DR just to make enough money to be worth his while.

Worst. Hitman. Ever.

Thankfully.

Agreed. Question remains...what happened to cause a hit to be put out, if it was indeed a hit which seems likely is the most pertinent question now. A hit isn’t put out just for kicks and that will be very interesting to see what the hell really happened.

Glad my wife and I got our trip to the DR out of the way 5 years ago... the stuff that has been going on there is quite disturbing, especially people who stayed on the resorts and were poisoned to death

Glad the cowardly POS that shot him got a good ole fashion ass kicking, but not nearly severe enough IMO

Get well Big Papi, we'd all invade the dominican if you command it!
