NY Mets/Jete Fans upset over Brady’s “Tom Terrific” trademark application lol

I don't care either way but I understand the Mets fans issue with what TB12 is trying to do here.

Looks like Tom Terrific finally found a way to stick it to NY Giants fans! (the Jetes he's been sticking it to for years...)

Boomer Esiason's opinion....

I love Tom Seaver. You know that. I've been advocating for a Seaver statue forever, since Citi Field opened. Craig Carton, my former partner, gave me a beautiful Tom Seaver statue for my birthday that my man Marc Mellon did for me. It's beautiful, and it sits on my desk, and I have a reminder of Tom Terrific and who he was when he was at the top of his game for the New York Mets.

And now, lo and behold, comes the greatest quarterback of all time trying to trademark the name "Tom Terrific."

When you've got so much goddamned money, you can do whatever you want, and this is now what Tom Brady wants to take: "Tom Terrific" as his nickname.

Maybe in New England they call him that, I guess. But you know what? We've been calling Tom Seaver "Tom Terrific" forever, for as long as I can remember, for 50 years.

That's who Tom Terrific has always been.

I am disgusted, and I'm really surprised, and I'm really ... I don't know, it just feels sleazy to me, you know?

There are very few things that I get wrapped up in. I got wrapped up in this.

There's nothing I can do about it. All I can do is talk about it and hopefully shame him into not going after it and recognizing a true great of another sport that had the name and was given the name well before he was ever given the name.

The Met fan in me is basically really perturbed by it. It just annoys me because it takes me back to my childhood, and I don't like people messing with my childhood.

Edit: Good comment from the WEEI post...

Boomer is way off base here. If the term isn't trademarked, it is fair game. Does anyone criticize Boomer for using his name when so many other greats have had it before?

I understand his point and it's fine to say there is only one Tom Terrfic, but to accuse Brady of doing something sleazy is just wrong. And to ask how much money do you need--how much does Boomer need? Why is he collecting a paycheck on the radio? Didn't he make enough when he was playing.

Use your brain, Boomer. It's OK to have an opinion and to love Tom Seaver, but to disparage Brady for this is just wrong.

It’s upsetting Jete fans since they are the same as Mets fans. If you are from Queens/Long Island, it’s pretty much Mets/Jets.

Can't say I am a fan of the Tom Terrific nickname ... but it's not my call.

I would like something with a bit more meat to it ...

Honestly, I don’t know any Pats fan who calls him “Tom Terrific.” I prefer to call him the GOAT.

Sometimes players do this to stop other people from using the name in merchandising, but not necessarily because they want to use it themselves.

In all honesty, if that's what he wants then shouldn't he be known as Tom the most Terrific of all Time instead of just...Terrific.

Boomer is from Long Island. That is all you need to know. Plus he appealing to his listening audience.

Seaver should’ve filed if it was that important to him.

I've heard him called Tom Terrific, but it seems to me it was earlier in his career, before he became the GOAT.

Brady recently filed for a bunch of trademarks, including “Tom Terrific.” Mets fans say it belongs to Tom Seaver, who never filed for a trademark. They are pretty pi$$ed lol.

Seaver might have a claim even if he didn't register the mark, so the WEEI comment is way off base. . But Seaver is probably not using "Tom Terrific" in commerce, nor does it seems that he intends to use that mark in commerce. Nor is it likely that any consumer of TB's products or services would be confused between TB's use of the mark and Tom Seaver.

All of this is something that TB's trademark lawyers would have considered and then checked in federal, state and common law trademark searches before they filed the two trademark applications. Then they'd advise Brady, probably in writing.

In short, this is just nonsense form a legal standpoint.

I don't even like 'Tom Terrific' and never heard it used other than by the announcers....

His Pro Football Reference page has had Tom Terrific as one of his nicknames for at least 5 years
