Probably not as well appreciated as he should be especially in today’s fantasy football addled era, I could see him being derided as a “system Quarterback” **cough**. As we Pats fans surely know, the value of a QB who has full command of the offense, makes great decisions lightning quick, and gets the ball exactly where it needs to be exactly when it needs to get there, gets you championships more than 40 yard dash times, jumping heights, or even how far they can throw it downfield.

In a way he was Brady before Brady.. Underrated from the start, not the flashiest player or biggest arm, but made the plays that needed to be made and became a supreme leader and winner. Also from everything I've heard, a great and highly respectable man.

As a kid in the 60's, I remember him so, so, well. He was smart and always in control. As someone mentioned earlier, he was Brady before Brady - drove his team downfield time after time in a very non flashy manner to pay dirt. He was a true winner, year in and year out. RIP Bart, you were a total class act on and off the field.

He was a statistical great of his from an efficiency perspective (not counting stats, which is for losers.) Brady before Brady with it all on the line. I believe he called many of his plays at the line too. Head-to-head owned Unitas. Also drafted 200th overall.

Comparisons are so close.

Packers players felt about him like Pats players feel about Brady. Total confidence in his ability to lead them to victory. And a willingness to run through a wall for him - he was beloved.

The loss of the generation of iconic sports legends is coming too frequently now. All four sports have lost men recently who paved the the way for the players who benefit from the opportunity and riches that come with today's games. Bart Starr's death comes on the heels of the great tributes to John Havlicek that made so many of us pause and think about how fleeting time and life truly is.
