Is either Dawson or Crossen likely to make the 53?

Aren't we fine with Gilmore, Jackson, McCourty, Williams and Jones?

and with McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Brooks (or Obi) and Ebner as our safeties?

Year after year we see the defensive back field diminished by a few or many. What may be a surplus today may quickly turn into a shortage tomorrow.

If the season started in June, neither would be on my 53. I think Crossen has a better chance though. Dawson is at an even bigger disadvantage because Crossen is also a slot corner who has, unlike Dawson, shown something.

Dawson is really in a tough spot but nothing is guaranteed with Williams taking his spot.

You can’t have too many quality DB’s in today’s NFL The Pats are well stocked with young talent

I think Crossen is in a much better spot. He plays lots of special teams and could win a ST roster spot. I agree that as of now, I wouldn't expect either to make the 53.

not in May

also, neither is "quality" defensive back

However, there is a better use for a roster spot than 6th corner. I would expect that they will be on the roster until the final cut.

In a case where all DBs play well, I want to trade Jones and carry a sixth corner. In that scenario, we keep both Crossen and Dawson (again it assumes all play well enough to make the team).

Jones will play out his forth year and be an UFA when it's over. Old friend Justin Coleman just got 10 million per year as a slot CB and Jones is better. Jones is ours for this year only.

Last, it's possible (generally) that either or both could be developed to play FS. FS is an aging position which we can start addressing now. Both must play STs.

How many times have we seen a 2nd round pick cut in his 2nd summer, before he even gets a chance to play in his 2nd season? Has it ever happened in the BB era?

Considering the fact that Dawson was injured for a good portion of last year, I think it’s fairly safe to assume that he’ll be making the roster.

It’s totally fine for Jones to only be here for 2019. If we were to worry about every free agent playing in the last year of his deal, we’d have one lengthy list, and a lot less championships over the years.

In your scenario (Coleman comparison), the team would be getting Jones on the cheap for 2019 + a 4th round comp pick. Do you see anyone else giving up a higher round pick this year (I don’t), and would it really be worth it to weaken the CB group?

Whether you call it a ST spot or just a 6th CB, what’s the difference? It sounds like you are suggesting the idea that Bill Belichick has a certain amount of roster spots to go around and that he’s never been flexible on such matters.

For example, 10 is usually a good number for DBs, so what’s preventing him from keeping 6 CBs and 4 safeties, especially when there may be some thought to giving guys like Williams or Dawson some reps on the last line, too?

For the record—Dawson’s dead cap hit is about 2x what his salary is, so there’s that, and they haven’t even had a chance to see their 2nd round pick from last April play in a game yet, so how can you already say that he’s not a “quality” defensive back?

Dawson is essentially a lock and most probably the inside successor to J. Jones. In fact it is substantially more likely Jones is traded than Dawson cut.

You can never have enough DB's on any NFL team, unfortunately through attrition it is better to have too many players who know and understand the system rather than bringing in guys late and having them play catch up...

Plenty of variables here:

McCourty is entering his 11th season. Does he still have it?
Harmon was being used less in late 2018 in favor of 3 - 4 CB packages. Does he get cut?
What are the teams plans for Jones
Who gets hurt during camp/preseason.

Remember 2005, 2006 and 2011? You can't have too many DBs.

And our boy Obi would like to see him make the roster as a safety.
Imagine the 50 50 balls with him and Williams size on the field

People are crazy if they think Dawson will be cut. If he is gone it'll be via trade.

Even then, they’d likely get way less than the 2nd round pick they just spent about a year ago. I’m honestly a bit surprised that this is even a discussion.

It's crazy. He very well may suck but Bill rarely moves on from players too early. Need more time to evaluate

Dawson was drafted as a 2nd round pick LAST YEAR. What are y’all smokin’???

Dawson would have to be terrible to be cut.
