Pats sign Dontrelle Inman

To me 4 WRs have roster spots today.

1 Andelman
2 Harry
3 Gordon
4 Thomas

Edelman-Dorsett-Harry -3 UDFAs- Berrios and Patterson - Demaryus Thomas - Josh Gordon - Dontrelle Inman

Something's gotta give.

This makes me wonder if BB got some suspension news about Gordon, or a health update on Thomas, or if he's just trying to let it all play out.

He overloads at WR more than any other position, and let’s it work itself out. Last year pretty much all those he brought in ended up being released. And I don’t think he counts on Gordon at all, he’s just looking at any contribution from him as a bonus.

Bill isn't old school. He's ancient school. I think he's letting it play out at both WR and TE.

Agreed. He is looking at Gordon as WR #5 right now but will jump to WR #2 when he is cleared.

Assuming most of these new guys don't show up on the injured list, the
Patriots should be able to fashion a decent wide receiving corps. The
two guys they are replacing were not so hot. Hogan could not get separation
all year and Patterson was not a traditional wide receiver. Patterson was a good
kick returner who was used on gimmick plays. Patterson fell over once just catching
the screen pass.

I think we will look back in 10 years and ask ourselves, 'how the heck did we win the SB with the scrub Hogan as WR #2?'

He was decent a few years ago...worth a flyer for sure

We are witnessing the evolution of BB, from the belief that he could just coach up D-Backs (Tiquan and "Two way Troy) to really solid CB's, from a star RB to RB by committee, from smaller "smurf" WR's to bigger, stronger WR's...

The game and philosophy of BB is changing on the fly and before our eyes.. more three D chess among the checkers players,,

I like the Inman signing, more camp competition and better choices...
I don't think it is as much of an evolution as to what the best available options are at the time all within the salary cap without screwing yourself over the following year. He has proven to be a "Leatherman's knife" among the rest of the steak and butter knives around the league year after year.

As was expected WR is gonna be extremely interesting this camp. Edelman and Harry are the two true locks to make the roster. Everyone else battling for the last 2-3 spots (depending on roster availability). Dorsett will likely make the team but he still needs to show out. Bill’s not gonna keep him around over a J. Meyers or Whomever just because. I think D. AThas is headed for the PUP which is ok cause that will be like a big trade midway through the season. Lot of question marks, but could turn out to be a pretty good WR core. Just look at what we started with last year :eek::eek:

Yeah, but I don't count Gordon as he wont play until columbus day. By that time someone is hurt anyway.

The wide receiver competition at camp is going to be an absolute blast to watch and it should produce a pretty deep and talented group. I really like how the off season has shaped up regarding the receiving corps.

Everytime I think we are going youth we sign Watson and Inman.

They don’t go youth at this point of the offseason, after compensation is closed teams go after veteran free agents who aren’t signed, and players who get released after the initial free agency and the draft are in the books. For the most part they pick up veterans for depth from the time the draft ends until the season opens.

The D Train is pulling into Foxboro!?

I mean at this point it is more likely that Berrios or any of the UDFA will be on the 53 in September than Gordon. And who knows what we get with DT.
That’s always the case at this time of year.
Who knows who could be injured, who develops, who doesn’t. My post was a response to dorsett being called a lock and I pointed out if every player would out as hoped dorsett won’t make the team, as one example of why he shouldn’t be considered a lock.
You seem to have misunderstood what I was saying.

I agree that nobody except Harry and Edelman is a lock as WR.

Locks: Harry and Edelman reasons obvious.

Near lock: Dorsett reason health and system knowledge.

Next best: Gordon, DT, Inman, Harris. Between injuries and suspension it's no lock for these guys but they are better than the next group. I included Harris here as I think he's a little bit ahead of the next group based on 3 years and last year's production.

That's 7 if Gordon and DT start on pup/suspension then no one has to be cut initially. Unless they go with 4 or one of the rest beats them out. Someone will likely get hurt and some will just not be a fit here so I don't see this as crowded as others do. But I do see a talented group that should be better than last year's group and deeper.

The rest: I like what I read about Ubosi and Berrios is the only pipeline for the Smurf slot guy but this group has a pretty big up hill battle to make it until injuries start.

Not sure about Ubosi's Smurf eligibility...
