Patriots cut WR Bruce Ellington

Josh Gordon out of rehab?

He didn't want to come here.
I don’t think that’s quite it, he just weirdly felt beholden to a verbal agreement. But I’m not pointing fingers, I’m just saying he would have been a great fit.

Huge leap to say both Ubosi and Berrios will beat out Dorsett. Right now Dorsett is WR2 even if a few guys beat him out it would be a long fall to not making the roster at all. Nothing I've seen from Berrios makes me think he's close to Dorsett and I need to see Ubosi in camp at least before going that far with him.

The 6 I start with are
Jules
Dorsett
Harry
DT
Maurice Harris
Slater

The rest have to prove themselves worthy of an NFL spot or unsuspended.
Here's the thing. That Pat have big problem with overkill in the secondary. Unless there is a trade down the road, the Pats are going to have keep 7 CB's and 5 S's That's 12 guys off hand at a position where they usually keep 10. If nothing happens to relieve the pressure in the secondary, it might lower the number of TE's and WR's we end up keeping

That leads me to the thought of trading JJones to the Vikes for one year of Rudolph. If Crossen makes a 2nd year jump he and Jones become redundant. I'd even throw in a 7th rounder to seal the deal

Ive read where the Vikes wants a 3rd for him and aren't getting a lot of interest at that price point. Any one know what the Vikes have at CB? Do they have a SCB better than Jones? Could be a win-win situation for both. Of course if that happened the Pats would need a couple of mega's restructures to make it work.

BTW- the trade sounds great but does anyone know whether Rudolph has slowed down to any degree over the last few years. It would have probably been a good idea to find that out before proposing the trade, but where's the fun in that. ;)

Do not understand the reluctance to put Dorsett in the lock category. Yes « with BB, anything can - and often does - happen ». But I think the locks are Harry, Edelman, Dorsett, Slater.

agreed and there appears to be 1 open roster spot at WR and only if Gordon stays suspended.

Vikes have Xavier Rhodes and Trae Wayans at CB, both of whom are quite good. I would wait for Rudolph to get released and then sign him to a Pats friendly contract. Vikings are going to release the guy since they can't afford him and need the cap space. Bill would be insane to trade for him at his current contract.

My expectations for Berrios have dropped considerably after I read a report by one of the more respected beat writers. So it wasn't Ben Volin. When comparing Berrios with Edelman in his first full year with the Pats, he said when they saw Edelman early in camp, he still didn't have a clear position, but his quickness and athleticism POPPED. They knew Bill would find a position for him and he ended up being an overnight success, FOUR years in the making. He went on to say that they never saw that "pop" from Berrios even when he was healthy.

It's for THAT reason that I really wanted the Pats to draft Isobella (I never expected him to go so high) or some other really quick and explosive guy. I don't have any real confidence that we have a pure Jules replacement on the roster

OTOH it could mean that in the future the Pats will change that aspect of their offense and go to the longer, but less explosive slot man. looking at that list of potential WR's there a LOT of length, especially if Gordon and DT come back healthy.

Thats part of it but not all of it. I think hes geographically loyal. Hes a southern boy born and raised in SC.

Wouldn't Humphries have been a little too redundant with Edelman here anyway?
No, I don’t think so, Captain. Both he + Edelman can play inside/outside/slot/intermediate routes, etc.

I think we saw it plenty when Amendola was here. If anything, Humphries would have likely been the main slot target, allowing Jules to have less wear and tear on his body.

So much for those who had Ellington on their 53 man rosters.

Easy.

If 4 WRs outplay Dorsett in camp he is gone.

We've seen his ceiling here.

If hes cut Pats save $2m and hes a 1 year deal.

You don't get any more expendable than that.

Man listen; if DT can get back on track, he’s making the team. Outside of Edelman & Gordon, he’s the best WR on the squad, has years of production AND already knows the system to a degree (giving him a head start). He just needs to grasp the NE “verbiage” & get in sync with Brady.

I don’t think we’ve seen his ceiling. We saw him long stretches on the bench during the failed Gordon experiment. I fully understand that Josh & BB see him in practice and they are excellent evaluators, but I think Dorsett can have his best year yet in 2019.

Totally agree...but with limited exposure to Brady while he stays away from Foxboro...that sync gets really hard. Some people here have said that doesn't matter as long as the WR knows the playbook. I call BS. That's a pipe dream.

Jules knows the playbook...he's not playing catch with Tom during the off-season because he has nothing else to do.

DT will be a great fit IF they can create some chemistry.

I hope you are right!

I was going to make a crack about him coming back after he found that missing hamstring, but I read the Reiss Tweet.

WR Bruce Ellington was released with an injury waiver, helping to explain his brief tenure in New England. Injuries have been an issue for him during his career.

So, instead, let me say that I wish Mr. Ellington all the luck in the world in his quest to find full health.
