Interesting note about a very recent Patriot who became a free agent:

Raiders will play Trent Brown at right tackle

I'm not too up on the numbers, however, to the best of my recollection that makes Trent Brown the highest paid RT by a country friggin mile, no?

If that is correct then one has to wonder if the Raiders have gone insane? Pay far in excess of those of the same position and of the same caliber of play is literally the opposite of what's needed to win in the NFL except for a 'win this year, I don't care one iota about next year' strategy.

Well, the Raiders did draft a LT in the first round last year, so this actually makes at least some sense. The money's not great certainly, as Brown was overpaid and Miller will be getting 1st round money for another few years, but it's still a rookie contract at one tackle spot, and that means that the tackle money's mostly just flipped, and not a disaster. If Miller can't get it done, they can swap the tackles at that point, and the money would then line up with positional expectations. As it is, they can put Brown on the right, where he's spent much of his time, and that'll give the Raiders 2 (theoretically) good tackles in a division with the Chargers (Bosa, Ingram), Broncos (Miller, Chubb) and Chiefs (Clark).

Definitely understand that train og thought/logic: they are getting the expensive position, LT, on the cheap so they have that available money to spend. But I'd assume teams have that built in. They get this expensive position temporarily at a notable discount so they can spend in other areas, like a top 7m(?) salary on the RT position. But pay +6m premium on the RT spot and you've missed that window to reinforce other areas with what should have been available funds. No?

Well, they got rid of Mack and Cooper, so that's a huge savings right there. And they need to figure out what they have in Carr, so keeping him protected is important. After this year, Carr's post-cut cap hit drops from $27m to $5m.

And, since they've currently only got 3 really big cap players (Carr, Trent Brown, Antonio Brown). have $28m in cap space, are currently scheduled to have more than $67m in cap space next year, and have written Trent's contract in such a way that it is essentially just a 2 year deal ($0 cap hit if cut after the 2020 season), I really don't see it as a financial problem.

As you say, there is no financial problem. There was no signing bonus spread over years, only a $10M bonus paid this year.

The raiders are OK for 2020 with about $40M of cap space. After that, Brown gets what will be market ($14M in 2021 and $15M in 2022). If the raiders wish to cut him after 2020, there is zero dead cap money.

The raiders have done a good job at starting to build for the future. Mayock's draft was a good one. Also, the raiders have an extra first in 2020 when it will be the time for them to draft a quarterback.

FIRST
RB Jacoby
DE Ferrell (too high at 4, but he won the award as DE of the year: the raiders got their man)
S Abram

SECOND
CB Mullen

FOURTH
DE Crosby
CB Johnson
TE Moreau
WR Renfro

Gruden drives me crazy, but they're doing some interesting and positive things with the Raiders right now.

Is this a joke?

All they did is threw 100 mil to an out of touch ex-coach that wants to play the “big boys“ game (GM) with an epidemic blend of narcissism and paranoia and are of course willing desperately to cover every **** up he makes . while easily disposing of everyone doing their job for the organization over the last many years..

@OT
They/He spent #15 overall pick last year on a very limited and raw OT who was a project at best (in a weak OL class), moved their pro-bowl LT to RT - at the end of TC! - and stuck with the decision despite disastrous results at both ends - thus ending Penn's career and making Miller the worst LT of 2018.

This year they had 4 picks in the top 35 and a bunch of other picks yet they didn't use a single one on OL in a rare good and deep class. Instead they made Trent Brown the highest paid OL with only one season of solid performance - with the best possible support in NE - and they are moving him to RT. At the same time they traded away their 2-time pro bowl guard and a key cog of their OL for nothing (just so Gruden has more to spend on his own toys).

Meanwhile NE got Trent Brown for a gain of pick ! - they traded away #95 and got back #143 (used on Bentley who looked like future LB leader) and next year they are getting the #99 back - they also got another 3rd comp pick for Solder who Brown replaced - used this year on another future OT Cajuste (better, stouter prospect than Miller imo).
That is building for the future (while winning all the nows).

Gruden and Mayock seem like two kids playing the teenage love game. They trade away a generational player and a rare superstar leader in Mack bc he would't return Gruden's calls while his manager was negotiating his situation - and they throw franchise money at 31y old WR primadona responsible for locker room breakdown of Steelers and at previously iffy OT that had one solid season under Dante - because they fell in love in the two games they watched (LAC, KC). (btw - i defended Mount Brown throughout the season in re-watch threads when he was constantly criticised there during the season so i value him quite a bit - just nowhere near Gruden). And then they went on to draft 3 players (of the 4 top picks) from the college title game Mayock saw live and fell in love.. while declining option on Joseph - another cog for the future of the old regime who just started to break out..

PFF: Raiders S Karl Joseph was a breakout star in Year 3

etc

The best move they made is moving to Vegas since its where they belong now..

Ideally your big money tackle is on the blind side, but it is really important to have two good tackles. I don't think the blind side tackle is that much more important than the other tackle as they used to be. I think teams are moving guys around to attack the weaker tackle more than they used to.

100% correct. Left or right doesn’t really matter any more. The “blind side” thing was that you didn’t want your qb hammered by a hot he never saw coming. Remember those shoulder/helmet to the lower back hits in the 80s?
Now you can’t breath on the qb so pressure from either side is the same. If you have a bad pass blocker they will find him. The days of best pass rusher is always on the QBs left are long gone.

roster full again . for today..;)

Van Noy 2.0
One of my choices in 2016 for the pick Bill threw away (sounds familiar) for Cyrus the Virus, along with Von Bell & Jonathan Bullard on defense; and LeRaven Clark, Austin Hooper & Braxton Miller on offense.

Big-time production at Michigan State (I hope our poster State can offer some insight), but entered the draft having already just turned 24, so the upside was shall we say limited. His testing #s were good...except for a 4.82 40, which for somebody barely > 250 lbs is below standard.

So he has the perfect build for a First Dynasty 3-4 OLB...which we no longer employ...but with the speed of a 3-4 DE...and I don't believe he will be stout enough for LDE (especially if he's still 252 or thereabouts) nor explosive enough for RDE here. But hey he's gotta be better than Nick Thurman right?

He had quad surgery at the end of March and will be out 3 months, April, May and June. Then he has to build up his strength, learn the Pats playbook, etc., so I am guessing he will behind the others. Maybe IR to return or off the game day roster for awhile.
PUP?

Still some "big" names out there so it'll be interesting to see if there's a flurry of action or teams are still holding out until training camp to bring theses guys in if they don't like what they're seeing at specific positions.

BB is the MASTER of the "Last Hurrah" (Brian Waters, Bryan Cox, Alge Crumpler, Junior Seau, etc., etc) and the MASTER of the training camp retirement (Reggie Wayne, Eric Decker, John Lynch) -- not coincidentally. I'm interested to see what he does this year -- if anything.

When can the signing begin without affecting the compensatory picks?

After May 7th is the wording. I presume that means that we can sign players after 4 tomorrow with the contracts being submitted on WED.

When can the signing begin without affecting the compensatory picks?

Jamie Collins? Anyone? He is still a baller, limited but... is he not better than Roberts at least?
