Free Agent Targets 2019

Shepard would have been nice for a year and the cost (most probably #64) would have been not that dramatic if he brought home a 3rd round comp 2 years later.

Not that I am an expert on Humphries but to me that was the most interesting situation because it involved a long term deal. Would have been reminiscent of how they got Dola on a relatively big deal back in 13.

I dont think there is any point in getting nervous until after the draft. There will be trades & picks and once all the dust settles afterwards we will have a better idea of where the team is really behind.

I’m not nervous, I’m a draft guy so I’m filled with unhealthy levels of expectation At this stage. Get back to me in two weeks and three days and I’ll reassess :)

Now you are changing the goal posts. Do you have any proof that NE gave Tate and Beasely low offers? All I know is NE attempted to get them and it didn’t work. If someone makes an attempt and misses it’s a whiff.

I am not changing the goal posts at all. My point has been the same through all 3 replies. They have only whiffed on Humphries because that is the only one of those that you mentioned they were really interested in.

The proof that they didnt care too much for the others is simply based on how fast their repeated attempts to sign Humphries leaked through the media and nothing else about the others. You keep forgetting who the biggest leakers in FA are. The agents of the players.

If a team never increases their offer then they cant have been particularly invested in getting you. And we are not talking market level deals here where you bow out like with Flowers.

Oh I didnt mean you specifically. I meant as a general guideline it is pointless to obsess over potential roster holes with draft day trades and the draft still coming in. Once those avenues close it will become harder to make big jumps with the roster. So we shall see..

Again, you offer no proof on anything regarding Tate and Beasely. You are just making assumptions the Pats gave low ball offers to them and weren’t really interested. The fact that the Pats’ repeated offers to Humphries was leaked to the media does not mean they weren’t interested in the other 2 guys.

If you want to play that game then lets have it.

And you have even less proof that the team even called about Tate or Beasley. "League source" generally means agents. The Patriots' interest has been used as negotiation tool for a while by agents.

It is amazing to me that there are people who have been watching the same thing happen every offseason for 15+ years and still dont get it.

Did you even read what I wrote above? Tate and Beasely themselves both indicated the Pats were interested them AFTER they signed with their new teams. It’s amazing to me you don’t know how to read.

I have a bridge to sell to you.

I get the feeling that other teams simply do not want to trade a top flight wide receiver to Pats under any circumstances for fear of embarrasment with their fan base.
Therefore pats will ahve to fill WR hole through draft, releases etc.

My idea is to sign TJ Yeldon as a RB and convert White to slot WR and then pick up outside WR in draft.

Nearly signed him a few years back

Not a bad idea

I agree with your assessment - the other teams are trying to play games around the Pats right now (Vrabel, are you listening?). Won't work. The Pats didn't get a steal on Trent Brown - they brought him in and gave him a way to succeed.

This is harder with the WR position, though. So, yes, draft at least two this year.

Disagree with you on White, however...Burkhead should try the slot. Deus has been saying that since we resigned the guy and I think it makes perfect sense.

If memory serves (and it often doesn't at my age), the Bengals used Burkhead in the slot a fair bit. I think Jalen Hurd is an interesting name in the slot too.

Yeldon has soft hands. Perfect RB2 here.

At this point, isn't Burkhead the RB2 with White the RB3. Bolden showed with the Dolphins last year and he'll be the RB4/5. That leaves RB4/5 for Yeldon if he were to sign..

The difference between building a team and acquiring talent is filling roles with specific players to fill all the roles necessary to meet the demands of most situations, games, and seasons. And to really make that work they have to build redundancy into those roles. So while we go about looking at players they are really looking at how players fill units and fit together. As much as we are enamored with bringing in talent they are going about filling multiple roles. They are playing chess while we play checkers. And while it hasn’t been a sexy offseason I think they enter the draft with only a few significant roles to fill. And when all is said and done they will be a final four team, with all the coaching and experiential advantages they usually have.

The Panthers re-signed Kyle Love, so they retain their four-man DT rotation from last season. That could mean they’re out on Allen Bailey, who would probably be choosing between the Chiefs and Patriots now, based on past reports.

That’s a signing I would really like, great for depth.

Yeldon could potentially do everything Burkhead does except better. Or worse. But the upside is there while we know what Burkhead will be.

White should definitely be the go to in obvious pass situations (unless Michel improves in that area) so I would say he's closer to 1st than 3rd on the depth chart.

Burkhead got some very visible touchdowns in the playoffs and put the dagger in the Rams but I'd rather it be someone else in short yardage/clock killing situations.

Looks like his APY could end up close to the 5th/6th round comp pick area. 6.25m APY is exactly the line between those two right now and coincidentally it was also the precise APY on his old deal with the Chiefs.

I wonder if the Pats are not confident enough that whatever his projected higher APY this time around would cancel out one of the 6th round picks and prefer to wait after the deadline to sign him ?

I mean you have cases like Sandejo with a APY of 1.2m cancelling out the Eagles' 4th round pick (Hicks @ 9m APY). So entirely possible that they dont want to risk losing a 3rd pick here.
