2019 Pro Days

I like these players a lot: Lindstrom of BC and Terry McLaurin of Ohio State and the Utah State TE/H-back Dax Raymond (Josh McDaniels could have a field day moving him around) and QB Clayton Thorson of Northwestern...and Khari Willis of Michigan State.

Willis is being compared to safety Earl Thomas. He seems to have the Steelers’ attention.
* Willis 5-10 7/8, 213, 4.52, 22 reps, 34.5 vertical, 9-10 broad.
* Thomas 5-10 1/4, 208, 4.49, 21 reps, 32 vertical, 9-5 broad.

Secondary studs, sleepers, Steelers at Michigan State pro day

Is Justin Layne the best corner in this class?

I think the praise is a bit overboard. Layne has some skills, but he's extremely slight and therefore has limited run stopping and press coverage capabilities. Would you even want him in zone coverage if he's not a good tackler? I like Oruwariye and Bunting more. I think the top guys are overrated, but I like Deandre Baker a lot. Definitely Baker over Greedy.

Ehhh, I don't know about that. On the one hand, I wouldn't be surprised if he has the best career, but on the other, I think he's far from the most complete prospect. We'll see how it shakes out.

I was actually comparing Willis to Chung earlier in my notes! Great leader. Smart, articulate kid. Plays special teams. Improving player. Has Patriot written all over him.

A little bit here from Patriots.com: 2019 Draft Prospects: Khari Willis, S, Michigan State

I know already posted but not talked about enough at 32. G/T. Physical as all hell, one of the best hands
/strikes in the class. Loves the game. Perfect mauler in man. Scar could do wonders here.

Whoever designed those webpages should be shot.

BTW, this is the best resource that I've found. Not sure if it has every pro day, but it's pretty nice.

That's what I wanted to ask everyone here. I know Lindstrom is being projected at guard. But do you think he could project at tackle for us? He's not the largest but his size is comparable to Matt Light and Isaiah Wynn, and his arm length at 34 1/8 is longer than Light's 33 1/2 and Wynn's 33 3/8.

Would be a really nice solution to the Wynn insurance and backup tackle position in year 1 if he can, and of course a good long term guard solution if Thuney leaves.

He's a great athlete with excellent technique. I'm sure he could hold his own in a pinch. But he's a guard 100%.

Guard is equally important to tackle, if not more important in some schemes. It bothers me when people just want to stash slow tackles there. No, you want good talent there too.

Not disagreeing with anything you said. Just riffing.

Wynn has some of the best feet I've studied in the last 5 or so years. Just a lot quicker than Chris.

I think both could be vg G's but Wynn was great prospect. Really wasn't a huge difference between his & Nelsons grade for me.

Every time I do a mock draft simulation, Lindstrom makes me pause for a long while and consider IOL at 32. Thuney may price himself out of an extension (he could probably get 12M per year, or even more, in next year's FA spending spree). I also would expect a swing tackle to replace Waddle, or potentially to replace Cannon in another year if he retires.

As an aside, in the past, the Patriots have generally gotten guards by drafting college tackles and kicking them inside (see: Mankins, Logan; Connolly, Dan).

The only notable exception I can think of is Mason.

The key for us and has been for a while is keeping the interior of the O-Line strong. If we look at when Brady has had problems it’s because of the rush coming through the interior. If it’s through the edge then I’m not as worried as Brady normally steps up to get away from it.

I like Lindstrom as a pick, the one thing I’ve been thinking of is there a possibility they try and move Thuney to RT as a future cannon replacement?

If Lindstrom or Risner are the best players on the board you take them.

Anyone watching the pro days on NYJFL* Network?

Drew Lock missed a few balls compared to Dwayne Haskins. But I have no idea what that even means. I'm not able to properly evaluate this. Curious to hear from others who have watched them both on their pro days.

I'm excited that we met with the West Virginia WRs. People are buzzing about Grier to the Patriots (which I wouldn't hate, but I think it's a bit early to get a QB), but Jennings is extremely exciting to me. I think he's perfect here.

In other pro day news, this might just be an agent talking up his client, but I could see it:

Doug Baldwin approves, apparently.

If Thuney stays, I doubt they'd try tackle. He has 32" arms, and he's only 300 pounds. If you want to be a power team, and I think the Pats do, you can get away with smaller guards because you need them to pull and they combo block otherwise. But at tackle, you're usually on an island in the run and pass game, and you want a bulldozer. The distance that a tackle can move the DE essentially equates to the size of the hole on a power run play.
