Rumor: Brady close to extension

I would hope we can lower the cap number to about 20 million.

There is $12M of sunk cost, that will there no matter what. Say a 2019 salary of $3M and a $20m bonus for a 4 year contract. That would give a 2019 cap of $20M ($12M plus $3M plus $5M). Brady would also receive $20M in 2019.

This cap would be same no matter what salaries, bonuses, guarantees and options are negotiated for 2020-2022.

If this is true, I wonder how much cap relief the Pats will get. Think Brady's cap hit is currently 27 million for this season.

His current $27M hit consists of $12M from previous signing bonus prorations, a $1M roster bonus [$62.5K/game, considered likely to be earned], and $14M in salary.

So, in theory, they could give him $14M as a "signing bonus," reducing his salary to $1M and wiping out his roster bonus. If they gave him a three-year extension, that it would be split over four years, meaning $3.5M would count toward 2019.

tl;dr: They can reduce his cap hit by up to $10.5M on a three-year extension.

I hope that leaves him enough to buy OBJ an Aston Martin.

If only we lived in a world where two buddies could get together and make their own rules, choosing to pair up on whatever team they wanted. Damn the agents, coaches, GMs, and owners. Damn the salary cap and damn the fans.

It almost sounds like I’m describing the NBA.

Sorry but Brit guy here. NBA jokes are lost on me I'm afraid.

He is going to need to be paid more signing bonus than what he is already guaranteed in order to extend his contract.

So a signing bonus of $30 M spread over 4 years plus $1 M salary would give a cap hit this year of $20.5 M with $74 M to be paid over the next 3 years, saving $6.5 M this year in cap

Brady should NOT be expected to accept $15M for his 2019 services, as you suggest.

Why haven’t any of the big name local guys said anything about this? Curran, Giardi, Volin, etc.

I've been busy at work (story of my life lately) and finally had a chance to catch up with Steve earlier. I know he heard from more than one source on the extension, albeit the numbers varied slightly and the circumstances behind how he found out (sort of on accident) were interesting. He's not one to put this stuff out there, but this was one after hearing it from a couple of people who would know, he tweeted this one out. Obviously, it's good news as it takes away the uncertainty and narratives about his future and gives them time to groom someone... hopefully, he'll continue to play well and they'll add 2-3 more rings until they find whoever that ends up being. :D
