McCarron - Status

Apparently there is.
Is the idea of practice squad IR simply for financial purposes to avoid a settlement, or do you think the team wishes to control the rights of that player with the idea that they may eventually make it back?

Is it more player financial or team control?

I think Berrios was that "future development" they were hoping for.
I agree that is the popular thought amongst fans, although McCarron was originally signed to our practice squad as far back as Sept.2017. This was one of the reasons that some felt that he may have a step on Berrios, due to already having a year in the system.

Seeing as how he hasn’t been signed to any futures deal, you’re likely right. Still, it could be something worth noting.

I don't expect that either is the future.

If I remember, neither Berrios or McCarron were particularly impressive in the preseason. McCarron won the job, maybe because he had some NFL experience. On his very first punt return attempt, McCarron had a muff. BB immediately cut him. Both players may be involved in OTA's and/or mini-camp with the Pats, but I don't see either of them making the 53 man roster.

I think there is always hope for guys who comes from the U. I would like to see how far Berrios has progressed in year two he could surprise: many thought he was the best Slot Receiver in the Draft last year.

And that’s pretty much my point. If they decide to draft yet another slot receiver, there’s probably a decent chance that we can just save the roster spot on the 53 and keep Berrios on the PS. Unless there’s a huge gap in talent, having a year of experience should help his case.

Obviously, this wouldn’t apply if they bring in a free agent or use a high draft pick (specifically for the slot, which isn’t likely seeing as how Berrios went in the sixth). It also wouldn’t apply if they feel that there’s someone out there who is leagues above, which would mitigate the positive of Berrios having a full year in the system. Personally, I’m hoping for a free agent acquisition, but my fear is that money is tight.

is there still room for new additions? I thought it was getting pretty crowded in there. But I've forgotten who all is in it.

Sure! Currently Bam Childress and Zach "Studfeld" are doing a ironic tall guy/short guy buddy skit. TJ Moe is watching.

Nope. I liked Berrios at Miami but he is what he is. I suspect the future is coming in this draft.

We need a #2, a #3, a #4, a PS player, and a #5 if he can play another position. And yes, one of these must be able to the backup to Edelman, and perhaps his future replacement.

I'm inclined to agree with you, because veteran alternative selection seems limited. That's why I want to see and read about how Isabella and Renfro test out and are thought to have handled specific situations.

They sure went through their share of little white dude slot receivers on the PS, last year. It remains to be seen how much was due to Edelman missing the first 4 games and how much may be a desire to keep a prospect for future development.

Berrios
McCarron
Billingsley

Berrios never made it out of TC.. He was IRed during the final cutdowns.

Berrios and McCarron got plenty of looks in the preseason. I remember I was intrigued by McCarron at the start of camp but he dropped too many bunnies (nerves?) and Berrios seemed more sure handed but otherwise...meh.
