DRAFT The draft

....

We can’t keep ignoring the QB, TE & WR positions when they have so many picks in the 1st three rounds. Can’t keep taking low level 6th and 7th round picks at those positions. They all need to be addressed earlier (1st 3 rounds). Sooner or later, the old “Belichick HATES this draft” will hurt this team in the long run. I know we just won it all and I’m thankful, but utilizing THIS particular draft can set this team up for even longer range success for the eventual Belichick & Brady successors (don’t wanna think about that part just now).
Didn’t do so badly last time we took a QB late in the sixth.

....

I expect a new backup next year maybe Bridgewater if he is a free agent. Anything but Hoyer.
Didn’t you read that MMQB story where the McCourty’s told how valuable Hoyer was in preparing for the Super Bowl? He’s likely to be Brady’s first successor, even if it’s only for a year or two. I don’t see BB dumping him, he’ll finish his career in New England. Only question is whether TB12 finishes his career first.

Me too. Rookie WRs don't ring my bell. They are a complete crap shoot. I'd much rather have them re-sign Patterson, work with Berrios over the summer and get him ready (he is a good player), sign an expiring rookie contract WR like Devin Funches (Panthers) or Chris Conley (Chiefs), and bring in some veterans to see if they have something left.
Plus hang on to Riley McCarron.

I would like to see how Steve Anderson and Damoun Patterson look in OTA's and mini-camp before signing vet free agents or rookie WR's. Anderson has experience at WR, TE and FB. Patterson was a highly thought of rookie walk on with the Steelers. Even if they both stick with the Pats, a speedy WR who stretches the field will still be needed.

Umm, no, it is hard to read a story that happens a week after my post. I try but...

I wouldn't read too much into Hoyer's practice help. We have all seen him in games, unfortunately. He will never be Brady's succesor! Two years of Hoyer would be 2 #1 picks.

The Pats need a decent backup. Brady is one tough SOB, but he is not unbreakable.

It is so challenging to predict what the Patriots will do in the draft. THey are so unpredictable from year to year and never seem to tip their cards.
How many people expected their first 3 picks last year would be Wynn, Michel and Duke Dawson?

The positions which will be most difficult to fill in FA or via trades in my view are DT and TE.
If they lose BOTH Trent Brown and Trey Flowers, LT and DE will be on their highest need areas.

Plus hang on to Riley McCarron.
Developing McCarron and/or Berrios on the practice squad is likely our best chance at eventually trying to replace Edelman in another couple of years.

Of course, there’s a chance that someone else will be added to the mix, but in the meantime they don’t have to use a roster spot on a developmental prospect.

The fact that Hoyer knows so much of the system means that he can run about 90+ percent of our offense. That alone masks some of his weaknesses in the talent department, and I doubt that he’ll be going anywhere until someone else comes here and proves they can do the same.

The big question is whether or not we carry 3 QBs on the roster, since there’s always the possibility that they’ll spend a draft pick at the position. I’m not counting Etling, who can remain on the PS if they feel as though he’s progressing.

A 6th round pick throwing to a 7th round pick (who happened to win the SB MVP). The league must be completely losing its sh!t watching this go down.

Just a side note:

Every year, I read WalterFootball's mock drafts. And, every year, some of his choices result in "hmm.... that's very interesting, and well worth pondering", while others result in "Just what in the hell was this guy high on when he did this mock?".

Belichick has drafted QBs well over the years. Cassell, Brissette, Garropolo, Hoyer have all been fine as backups. Actually, I'd love it if they could get Brissette back from the Colts.

I think Hoyer retires before brady does

This 2019 TE class seems vastly overrated a lot of move TE's really lacking that Y-inline guy. Your run game would really suffer with most of these guys. Might have to double dip to make it work or pay someone good in FA. I am not seeing any one Player that's complete: I am actually hoping Gronk returns for one or two more years. I know we had Gronk but we may have sat on our hands at that position for far too long. Back to the 2019 TE crop some can run like a deer catch with the best of them but can't block a fly. Others look the part but would barely Brady beat Brady in a foot race don't expect any yac yards from them. Some of them when they run the 40 are going to be timed in June seriously.
I WANT GRONK!!!
