The draft

Isn’t Murray projected to go top 15

I'm on record as liking the idea of trading some of the picks, in order to get an extra 1st round pick next year. Given preliminary notions of what the QB class will look like next year compared to this year, it makes sense to me.
This is an excellent QB year as well, maybe not as good as next year, or last year, but still excellent. Can’t keep NOT making the picks we own. Stop trading for future picks. Draft good players now ! Passing up good players is a mistake. We have a 41 year old QB, albeit still the goat, but he will be 42 when the season starts. Need his future replacement NOW.

Gronk may be finished. Last year was a very good TE draft, and we pretty much ignored it. This draft has some great TEs as well. We may lose Hogan, Patterson and Dorsett at WR, very deep WR draft.

We can’t keep ignoring the QB, TE & WR positions when they have so many picks in the 1st three rounds. Can’t keep taking low level 6th and 7th round picks at those positions. They all need to be addressed earlier (1st 3 rounds). Sooner or later, the old “Belichick HATES this draft” will hurt this team in the long run. I know we just won it all and I’m thankful, but utilizing THIS particular draft can set this team up for even longer range success for the eventual Belichick & Brady successors (don’t wanna think about that part just now).

He'll trade #32 into the 2020 draft

Agree. Trade for a 1st next year and a mid round this year. Just hope it’s to a team that was decent this year and thinks their close but falls flat next year and gets us up in the 15-20 range.

If Bill is going to act on a QB, he better do it this year. The dolphins, giants, jaguars, broncos, redskins and maybe the buccaneers are in the market for a qb. They’re looking for the next Patrick Mahomes.

Just a non college football fans PoV but I am expecting 32 to be traded if they can get a cardinals 1st for 2020 or some of the other trash in the league want to give up a top 10 pick for our 32. Unfortunately a lot of the trash is in the AFCE so that will limit trades to the top 10. I would expect at least one of our 3rd to be traded also for a 2020 pick also.

I expect a new backup next year maybe Bridgewater if he is a free agent. Anything but Hoyer.

Anyone who traded a 2020 1st for our 32 should and would be fired. The only possible exception is while the patriots are on the clock and a team sees someone that they MUST have.

There are 4 QBs likely to go in the first round this year. Let teams grab them this year, and that'll be 4 teams that won't be looking at QB next year, when the QBs should be better.

Good thoughts, really good thoughts.

Perhaps Ian could start a Draft Forum on the site so the totally draft engaged posters could pick it all apart, discuss, debate and educate.

I like the N'Keal Harry pick, but I'd be shocked if he was there at 32. Hockenson is a great pick, but I doubt he'd be there at 56. I like the rest of the picks as well. My dream would be

1) Noah Fant TE, Iowa
2) Best QB or WR available
2) Torn here, defense or if we go WR with the earlier pick, get the best QB available.

I'm a big Will Grier fan, he's a warrior, has a quick release, similar size to Garappolo, but a better arm IMO. I'd love to wind up with him, and his receiver David Sills.

I love David Sills too. I would not mind to grab a TE early and Fant is really really good, but like i said i would rather move down 10-15 spots and get another 3rd and draft Hockenson and another guy instead of Fant. I don't know about Grier his footwork is not the best, but i would not mind to grab him too. My concern is that is too early to pass the torch if Brady is really staing for another 4 years. I would like to give him more weapons and stuff, let's see.

What did we see Ettling for 3 preseason games?? The jury is still out.. there was not a lot of confidence that #12 would become the great one after the 2000 season.. we do not really know what we have got in him right now.. no reason for optimism or pessimism..

Against the Redskins.. 2 for 5, 21 yards
Against the Eagles.. 0 for 1
Against the Giants.. 18 for 32, 157 yards, 1 TD and 2 int..
Did not play against the Panthers...

There's no QB in this class that i would be happy taking. Whereas next year the QB class is a lot better, my #1 guy for next year for us is Jake Fromm.

There's no Juilo, Calvin, Moss, OBJ - WR for this years draft, if Metcalf can stay healthy he has the best chance to be that guy. There's still some very interesting prospects though from a WR perspective - Riley Ridley is one name everyone should be familiar with.

There is a lot of depth in this TE class as well. There's plenty of talent that we can find with this years class.

TE - TJ Hockenson is the closet thing to Gronk, Strong Blocker, good RR, Good hands, Good speed too.

Noah Fant - is Evan Engram with slightly better blocking.

@BaconGrundleCandy would be one of the best to speak too

"We can't..."
"will hurt this team..."

You do realize we HAVE and WILL and instead of hurting this team, it has brought 6 championshipos in 18 years ?

"he better..."

Hahaha. BB doesn't need to panic. Who cares about the next Mahomes ? Do we even know if he is going to be any good ? One year...... maybe yes, maybe no.

1. No it's not. Next years is better but not great.
2. No it doesn't. Fant is good, not great.
3. No it isn't. Next year's WR draft is the bomb.

Sorry but I have to disagree with those statements.
If you were talking 2020 draft then you have a point.
Bill will trade out for next years picks, I believe. We have a lot of injured players returning so those are kind of rookies. About 4 of them (Wynn, Dawson, Bentley, throw a dart) will make the roster. We have 11 or so picks this year and between this year, unless half go on IR, and last year's haul I don't see Bill making that many picks this year. That's 1/4 of the roster being 1st and 2nd year players.

I love draft talk except that none of the players the media is talking about will ever get down to us. ;) That being said, from what I have heard this draft is deep going into the first 3 rounds, do help is out there.

I think the focus should be on the DL. We could lose both Shelton and Brown this off season, and while neither were world beaters, they were both solid, especially at the end of the year and will need to be replaced with quality people that have the potential to be upgrades. So who are the 2nd tier DLmen that could actually fall to the Pats?

As for the QB position, I have a feeling that Brady's ultimate replacement will be someone who's already in the league. I'm hoping that next year DCarr will be let go by the clueless Raiders and with a year behind Brady, be coached up to be a decent replacement. In that scenario Brady plays 2 more years and is replaced by Carr who has had a year in the system. Well we can dream, I guess

We really need speed outside, so THIS year, I'd use one of those 2nd's on whoever the fastest WR on the board is......and I'd resign Paterson and Dorsett.

I'm on board in either trading a bunch of those picks into next year or using them to move up in this year's draft. Like it's been mentioned, we essentially have 4 picks from LAST season coming back. We don't need an additional 12 more rookies. To do that is just helping the rest of the league grab our well coached left overs.

I'd be happy with a 6-8 man class of QUALITY picks rather than taking shots at 12. Don't forget that there is going to be at least one UDFA who will make the roster as well.

So in brief, I'm hoping THIS draft will be focused on the DL and WR/TE. Everything else is optional.

You know the Pats.

There is some obscure WR sitting on a team like Memphis who gets drafted by NE and becomes a beast (my hope}. NEs luck is due to change at this position.

Living in NYC, I got to see Bridgewater during the Jets preseason, and he looked excellent. Definitely 100% healthy. Would love it if the Pats signed him. Still only 27 years old I think.
