So... where's the outrage?

I'm sorry, but that's a joke, right? If it were "performance reasons", then please explain why Jordan Effing Richards was on the field that night. (......actually please explain why Jordan Effing Richards was anywhere within 100 miles of that stadium). In that context, citing "performance reasons" is insulting.

It is not a joke at all. Jordan Richards was a core ST player and S4. That's why he was dressed that night. He also played fewer than his average number of snaps in the game as he was essentially only in when Chung was out for a series due to an injury.

If they were not going to use him under ANY circumstances in that SB (even if Jordan Richards was play-after-play performing his "Madden Glitch" schtick ) .....then why did they even dress Butler for the game??????

If they had Butler dressed just to be a bench mannequin, why not dress Kenny Britt (could've used him after the Cooks concussion) or Alan Branch (Blount decimated the middle of our DL for 90 yards on 14 carries).

If Jonathan Jones is available then there is a good chance Butler is inactive. Why he got dressed is because if you lose 1-2 CBs to injury then you at least still have someone on the bench as an emergency option. That is pretty obvious.

You are glossing over ALOT of stuff there.

Not at all. Butler had a below average season and played a lot of hero ball jumping routes and guessing. His decline continued this year with an abysmal season with the Titans. You can agree with the decision or not but arguing that he didn't give the coaching staff enough performance reasons to bench him is silly.

Belichick benches Malcolm Butler in the SB and the media blows a gasket.

McVay has his best weapon TGII on the sidelines more often than not and...crickets.

o_O
He wasn't exactly setting the world on fire when he was out there.

Once again, then why dress Butler if nothing short of a nuclear attack would have gotten him onto the field?

Why dress him instead of Kenny Britt or Alan Branch? Those were players at positions that needed truly needed help that night.

You are still avoiding that very obvious question.

.

Gurley played more than he did against NO so it wasn’t a surprise. He wasn’t benched, and when he played he wasn’t effective. Butler went from starting CB to zero snaps at CB- the results were a defensive performance so bad it made history.

So to answer why these completely different situations are treated differently- because they’re different.

If Bill played MB for 50% of the snaps like he did with JC Jackson and we still lost people would still want blood.
Some people might but I wouldn’t be one of them. I had read that even other players didn’t know that Butler would be benched and they were playing in positions they weren’t used to because of it. I don’t think Butler and Gurley are comparable at all.

I answered that already. If there were injuries it is better to have him available than making someone else play CB.

It is really not that hard to understand. Branch and especially Britt or anyone else from the inactives really would have not made any difference.

I have read and heard that Butler and other DBs knew days in advance that Butler wouldn't be starting. I heard Logan Ryan, while being interviewed by WEEI last week on Radio Row at the SB, say that even be knew ahead of time (presumably from D. McCourty) that Butler wouldn't be starting and he wasn't even on the team any more at that time.

Your argument is completely nonsensical. If they weren't going to play Butler save in an injury/emergency situation, he was no more useful than Branch or Britt.

FWIW, at least in the media I've been consuming the Rams are taking a lot of **** for Gurley's usage. That's definitely the case here in LA, at least. The reason why they aren't taking more, I think, is partly because the Rams don't have any fans so there's no real group of angry/upset people pushing at the issue. Also that a lot of people just assume that Gurley is hurt and they have to pretend he wasn't because they've been lying about it and keeping him off the injury report for weeks.

Which, to be fair, would be a national ****ing scandal if there was any appearance that the Pats had done it, but whatever. The double standard is so consistently apparent that it's almost not even noteworthy anymore.

"I have heard...." is pretty flimsy. Anyone can type "I have heard...." on the internet to make up anything.

How about an actual LINK?

Eric Rowe said he didn't know he was starting until right before game. Seemed as puzzled as rest of NE as to why no Malcolm Butler

or this:

Further, the story that Logan Ryan who wasn't even a Patriot knew while Eric Rowe didn't is mind-blowingly ridiculous. Think about it.

You win this thread. Bravo!

Gurley is obviously injured. Both McVays actions and Gurleys reaction to not playing is consistent with that. Different situation than Butler

Naw, not about "winning" - - just trying to get a better understanding - - I thought maybe, somehow I was missing something or that there was some new information on this. Truly a mystery and would love to know why this happened as it did last year. It just seemed that Belichick decided to pull the pin out of the grenade at the last moment of a truly great season.

Like I said - - he has a beautiful mind and 90% of the time it is a great thing for the franchise, but 10% of the time he is a ticking time bomb.

If he was and the Rams refused to report that on the injury reports, isn't that a clear violation?

.

Where's the outrage? We won, no outrage needed. If this happened to our team you'd bet there would be outrage. In fact, our spots talk show hosts are probably talking about it more than LA's today, they just don't care.

I don't think we will ever truly understand what happened but my thoughts on the fiasco are already well documented in the Malcolm Butler thread so I am going to forget about that and enjoy this Superbowl win!

Jordan Richards started 12 games at safety for the Falcons this year.
