Flashback: when the Pats danced on the Chargers logo and made Tomlinson cry about it

Like, it was just a perfect storm of hypocritical, ego-driven idiocy that somehow went beyond a lack of self-awareness and plunged into negative self-awareness territory. It was absurd and tone-deaf and surreal in a way that you just don't see very often, but everyone was so sick of the Pats by then that Tomlinson just got an inexplicable free pass for life. So fitting that he ended his career as a Jet. Even when he played for the Chargers he was basically a Jet without the uniform yet.

Hindsight has made this whole thing better because everyone basically got what they deserved at the end of the day. The Pats won a couple more titles, Tomlinson got exiled off to Jets land to finish his career without ever winning anything, Merriman blew out his knee and never mattered again, and the only Charger from that team who was worth a damn happens to be the one guy still there and playing winning football.

When the Patriots lose and players from the winning team talk trash, you'll see the phrase "When you win, you can say what you want" tossed around. That standard gets forgotten when it comes to the Patriots. Somehow, Merriman, Tomlinson and the Chargers are the sympathetic figures, even though they were the team with the celebratory dance and the one that talked trash before the game. When they lost, everyone was surprised and upset when they received some of what they had been dishing out. It really is crazy.

Troy Brown coming out for the coin toss and doing the Lights Out dance like he did in that video ... that would be pretty epic.
Uncle Rico, you should rename your signature as "The five stages of grieving"
Rams, Panthers, Eagles, Seahawks and Falcons grief

They were extremely arrogant before the game and just a ****y team in general. A lot of them were talking trash saying our dynasty was over (Vrabel commented on that) and Merriman in particular thumped his chest at a pre game pep rally bragging that he was going to punch Tom Brady in the face or something like that.

They had it coming imo.
We had some chargers fans on this board during those years who were really annoying .

  1. Don't forget Merriman got caught on camera at a pep rally, yes it's not just the Texans, for the game where he said to the crowd he was going to lay a smackdown on Tom Brady.
  2. I will credit Merriman however for staying on the field after the 07 AFCCG and congratulating a lot of the Patriots.
  3. Don't forget all the crap LT has said about Bill not being classy over the years.
  4. I do have to laugh at Rivers calling Hobbs the sorriest assed corner in the league.
  5. My favorite was Colvin yelling down the hall at the Chargers locker room after the game "the light have been turned the F off" and other stuff like that. I'm sure that salt felt really good.

Anybody know where the complete game is? I've looked on youtube (maybe not good enough?)
I've also looked on youtube, to no avail. It appears that the only link to a full rebroadcast of the game has been removed, at the "request" of Park Avenue...the bastids.

Yea. Its too bad b/c there are a bunch of other games on there.

That one was epic.

Rivers has sort of emerged as the sympathetic figure from that team, and I can get it given his 07 AFCCG performance and his subsequent career. But at the time I thought he was just as much of a whiny, sore loser punk as the rest of those guys. They just came into your house and whipped your 14-2 best record in the league asses, and you start publically throwing insults at the CB who broke up 6 of your passes that day? Childish.

I don't recall Rivers ever doing something like this publically again so he may have grown up since then. Who knows.

I thought this was interesting.

LT, Merriman, Willie (who was not on that team) all chit-chatting about it.

LaDainian Tomlinson looks back on the 2006 playoffs
I love how Willie educated them and they just sat there quiet.

I do agree with Merriman though. How could you not be confident in yourself with how stacked that team was?

Like Atlanta in the 2016 Super Bowl, had they just kept running the ball, they would’ve easily won.

When Culter was in Denver they literally had taunting wars against each other. Rivers talks a lot of smack but then again so does Brady. I think in 06 the moment got the better of everyone. Daniel Graham jumping up and down pointing at the logo and yelling crap? Never saw that before or after.

Agree. Except for the public trashing of Hobbs I've never heard anything controversial out of Rivers.

Oh, I have no problem with smack talking. It's just that stuff should be kept on the field and not brought up in front of a microphone unless you've already won the game. That was my issue here.

And yeah, I surprised (and am still to this day) over the amount of emotion the Pats showed after that game. They really took stuff personally, far more than I've ever seen them before.

The only thing I’ve seen was that was similar was him yelling at Jay Cutler during pre game warmups.

Aside from that, he just yells at his own players.

Nothing wrong at all with talking smack.

Agree on the logo stomping. Pats could have been a little wiser but the emotions out of those two teams and with how it ended clearly got the best of them.

Hell, if a team like the Dolts, Ravens or Steelers started dancing on the Flying Elvis after a playoff game this board would melt

Well, the other thing is, it is Jay Cutler. He gets a pass on that from me.

I'll be honest. I thought Merriman was a decent studio personality. I remember once on the NFLN he and Willie did an informative and detailed X and Os of pass rushing, setting the edge, etc.

What happened to him?
