How do you think they would have done in 2008 if TB didnt tear his ACL? He was at his peak and is was mostly the same team as 2007. That might have been another super bowl.

The Pats also had an easier schedule in 2008 than they did in 2007.

What are you talking about? The Deflategate scam was hatched IN the AFCCG and nobody on NE knew about it until after the AFCCG was over.

Thanks for the correction. I forgot the exact timeline.

I wholheartedly agree the elite defenses were 01 thru 04....it should be noted that Brady and the offense played a role in the defense imo. If you remember back then Brady was a game manager and a possession manager. Combined with short passes and screens and a solid run game they would possess the ball for massive chunks of the game. I remember the ToP being highlighted weekly, often skewed as heavily as 2 to 1 for Patriots. The defense got alot of rest in those 21 to 14 and 17 to 10 wins...

I think ToP is both. Gotta have a D that gets off the field and gotta have an O that converts 3rd downs

See below. If your remember the teams you can understand why some ToPs were better than others.

ToP
01- 9th
02- 20th
03- 7th
04- 8th
07- 2nd
06- 6th
08- 3rd
09- 1st
10- 23rd
11- 26th
12- 11th
13- 17th
14- 23rd
15- 20th
16- 6th
17- 11th
18- 8th

It's one long run
@QuantumMechanic
@robertweathers

In my opinion it actually makes it less it a bit to try to "break" it into smaller chunks..

It is one long continuous run of insane organizational success under the same HC and QB. Saying it is a 18 year run of Ultra Success verses 3 or 4 shorter runs combined makes no sense and actually makes it seem smaller than what it really is.
I think history will view the whole thing as the Brady/Belichick Era, 2000-20XX.
Keep it simple and base it on a current standard which is the QB and coach.

2000-2018 BB was hired. Tom was drafted.

50 Browns, 70s Steelers, 60s Packers, 90s Cowboys, 70s LOLfins all had just one QB and coach during the stretch.

The 2000 Patriots Were the Last Bad Patriots Team

My 4 eras

2000- Belichick can't coach and is the biggest mistake Kraft made, who is this Tom Brady guy on the bench

2001- February 2007. Suck it NFL

Feb 2007-2013. the dark times

2014-present. Suck it NFL

as if that was a mistake and not the result of Belichick's genius at work.

Belichick has said that throwing the ball there was the right call but most idiot fans and commentators only judge a play by it's results - which if you carried that logic out to it's full conclusion means they would anoint an idiot OC as a genius if he's just slightly less of an idiot than his DC opponents...

You throw and it's a touchdown you're a genius.
You throw and it's incomplete you still have 2 more downs to try to punch it in.

Turning over the ball wasn't the design of the play, it was a great read by Malcolm Butler. A great read on a play by a defensive player doesn't mean the call was a bad call and I can't stand this type of results-oriented evaluation of decisions.

I mostly agree, though I think Seattle could have called a pass play that had both less risk and played to their strengths. Roll Wilson out right. That would have put tremendous stress on the defense because he’s a threat to run it in and if they come up on him he could throw it over them to the endzone. If nothing comes open as he approaches the sideline just airmail it through the endzone. By the play’s design he’d be out of the tackle box so no risk of IG.

It was absolutely the correct play call under the circumstances as they existed in that exact moment, it was simply the wrong result. Sometimes the other guy gets it right, that's football.

I also think that the commentators have a major influence on the millions of people who view the games. Collinsworth starting yapping about the call being wrong from the moment Butler made the pick, instead of commenting about what a great play it was.

The same thing happened with Jim Nantz and the Tuck rule call, in spite of the call being correct by the letter of the law and with many examples of the same call before and after. He was harping on that call after the game for a long time.

In both cases the useful idiots picked it up from there.

Apparently that was one of the Seahawks' favorite plays in that situation and Belichick knew it. It's uncanny how often he has the team work on a play that ends up being useful. The article gets into that a little bit.

What is your definition of dynasty? Do you need a certain amount of championships or a certain amount of regular season wins and deep playoff runs? Because IMO, I've always considered a dynasty as a franchise that has won at least 3 championships in a relatively short amount of time. If you want to consider 2014-present its on era, then I think we would need one more championship to be considered a dynasty. I don't think 2 puts you into dynasty status. Just my opinion

This article on ESPN is nuts when you think about it. Some -heck many - of Brady's teammates were 5-8 years old when he won his first Super Bowl. That is crazy. Most teams would be happy with 1-3 years of what we the Pats fans have now had for close to 18 years!

The Seahawks calling a pass play wasn't wrong per se. The specific play they called was pretty dumb though, on several levels.
  1. The target of the play was a guy who was a special teams scrub with 11 receptions all season. Trying to win the game as time winds down on a scripted throw to a guy who was one of your LEAST dependable receivers is innately stupid. Butler made a great read, but the receiver also ran the play kind of slow/tentative. If you target one of your top WRs I can buy it. If target Matthews who was having a huge game I can buy it. But you're going to maybe stake your entire year on a random scrub? Really?
  2. It's a play that, by design, is a telegraphed throw to a predetermined target, and works entirely on out-executing the defense. I kind of take a dim view of that kind of play in general, but especially when the defense has their backs against the wall and any kind of effective play fake or misdirection probably lets you walk into the end zone. And double-especially when the predetermined target of the play is a huge nobody (see #1). This wasn't a goal line slant to Julio Jones or something.
  3. What a perfect scenario for a run-pass option it would have been, with Lynch and Wilson in the backfield that close to the goal line. Or a rollout where Wilson can throw or sprint for the pylon based on how things shake out after the snap. That wouldn't guarantee success of course, but it would at least show some more awareness of the situation and your own strengths on offense.
Talking heads going PASS THEREFORE BAD was dumb. That doesn't make the play call actually good though.
