Raiders Hire Mike Mayock as GM

Honestly, I think Mayock is smarter and more thoughtful in his straight-up evals of player potentials than Kiper and the rest. At least when he's speaking off-script - like when he's killing time with Eisen in the broadcast booth at the Combine. He seems much less willing to make authoritative-sounding pronouncements and firm predictions, when he does this, it often seems forced. He seems much more comfortable being balanced and nuanced in ways that aren't really part of the show that broadcasters want to put on.

He seems like the kind of guy who could be technically sound and objective, and work well with scouts, but also likely to be completely out of his element with management politics.

Where I think Mayock would be great is tweeting his player observations directly from Shrine Game and Senior Bowl practice weeks as they're taking place. Not just the games ... the practices.

After Gruden gets Mayock fired in two years, we should start a GoFundMe to pay Mayock to do that.

Mayock is good with college talant, but does he have the chops to do free agency, salary cap management, all the other staff positions, and dealing with the NFL office, and egotistical agents? I think he's in over his head.

This is what I am thinking ... will be interesting to see how he goes about it.
The right choice of ingredients makes the best soup, no easy task getting the buy in from players.

Let BSPN run their normal draft coverage. If I’m mayock, I have the NFL network show the entire draft from the raiders war room (we see trade calls as they happen, picks etc.)

Mayock seems like a solid evaluator and like a guy with his head screwed on straight should probably be the first 2 primary considerations when picking a GM in an organization where the coach rules all.

Supposedly a lot of GMs have number cruncher type guys. Plus I don't think Mayock is going to be a Ron Wolf type GM, more of a crazy eyes Caserio guy.

Very happy for Mike. He deserves this & is absolutely qualified for it & then some imo.

This will be fascinating to watch. I'm thinking Mike was brought in as a check to Gruden of sorts but we all know Gruden gets the last word?

I'm guessing the timing was right in Mike's life & might even have a good relationship w Jon considering the TV gigs they had.

So it'll be extremely fun to watch that dynamic but the only thing that matters for Oakland is 2019/2020 drafts. They're literally betting the next 10 years on these drafts. Rebuilding & replenishing the roster barron of talent.

It's wonderful to have tons of picks but having more picks = draft success is a myth. Bottom line is you hit or miss on your pick. Having more doesn't help. Ask SF. Ask Cleveland & others.

Gruden is just bad. He left TB in terrible shape & has a poor record in terms of drafting.

Mike has had his hits but also big misses that could criple you for a while.

Sanchez > Stafford
Gresham>Gronk
Gabbert >Newton
Pounding the table for Manziel
Aaron Curry > Clay Matthews
S Hill>Jeffrey
Weeden>Cousins
Honestly Im opposite on all those but nobody is perfect. Mike absolutely knows what he's talking about & forgot more than I know in the last hour.

He was right on Mack, we both had him ahead of JC & possible#1 overall guy material.

Had Kamara as 1st Rd pick I believe. I had a high 3rd.

Look for BC, Clemson & other ACC prospects along w Notre Dame & the obvious SEC.

Mayock needs to surround himself with a numbers cap guru person and a legal contracts assassin

I sent the president of the Jete an e-mail today demanding that he sign Mel Kiper as the next Jete G.M., as soon as he fires Macgagington. I told him, as a long time long suffering Jet season ticket holder I demand an appropriate response to the Raider's Mayock hiring. Hope the idiot thinks it over...

If they hired Kiper as GM and Jerry Glanville as head coach, EVEN I would buy Jete season tickets.

I like that Mark Davis is basically just hiring guys that he's watched on TV. Should be interesting.

What will be the best is when he hires Michael Irvin as life coach.
Hires Deon Sanders as assistant to the GM Deons Job will basically walk around yelling pay that man when players are discussed.

Y'all are posting things like

as if Davis didn't exist during Gruden's first stint as Raiders head coach.

I'm aware that he was the Raiders head coach in years prior. It was a comment meant to amuse, it's New Year's Eve and some of y'all are thinking that people don't remember the Snow Game and Walt Coleman. Come on y'all!

2014 NFL Draft: Taking a look at where Mike Mayock hit and missed over the years
Mike Mayock's greatest hits and misses

Interesting how many Pats 2nd-round draftees were in his Top-5.

WRT his whiffs, pretty much every media draft analyst whiffed on the same guys.

One thing this list illustrates clearly is that there are some positions that aren't really worth ranking in some drafts, especially QB. How refreshing it would have been for a guy like Mayock to look at the 2013 QB class and said, "F**k this. None of these guys are worth ranking, much less wasting a draft pick on."

Imagine what this team will look like by the time they hit Las Vegas?? Lady Gaga will get bounced as the #1 tourist attraction on the Strip...

The "Shiny Beads" method of the Raiders personnel decisions continue.. under the daisies Al Davis smiles.
