Raiders Hire Mike Mayock as GM

At first I didn't like it, but the Raiders have a **** ton of picks for next year, so getting a guy who is good at this part of the job is kinda of a great fit.

Still, I think Gruden is a horrible HC and thus it's all going to be moot

Ultimately you may be right and if the bottom falls out who’s gonna be to blame? Gruden. No pressure on mayock

Usually Id agree with you, but Gruden has 9 more years in his contract... It doesn't really matter if it's his fault (and it should fall on him, at least some of it), he'll find a scapegoat until Al Davis Jr. kick him to the curb

And if that happens mayock can go right back to tv.

It's not a guarantee he'll be bad, these things are always a coin flip.

Isn’t this basically like the 49ers hiring John Lynch? Mayock was a former player too. Don’t forget that.

Not disagreeing with that at all. Always thought some of the media personalities are overrated by the average fan. The people at the teams work at least as hard as they do and have a better idea of what their specific GM/coaches look for in potential draft targets..

Report: Raiders hire Mike Mayock as G.M.

Wow, Mayock knows all the college players so it'll help their drafting, but him and Gruden on the same page?
It’s very easy to be a genius on TV like Mayock or Kiper when you get to list hundreds of players on your draft board and no one cares or remembers the bad ones you had up high. (Not to mention these guys change their “big boards” on an hourly basis all April)

It’s a lot tougher to stay a genius when you get to pick 1 or 2 guys per round and you’re stuck with that player for years.

Gruden and Mayock had the best jobs on TV playing coach/GM. Let’s see how they do for real. Their opinions will have consequences now.

The thing is, Mayock's evaluations could be spot-on, but Gruden could still overrule him when making a selection. However, if Gruden's selection busts, Mayock will still get the blame.

Honestly, I think Mayock is smarter and more thoughtful in his straight-up evals of player potentials than Kiper and the rest. At least when he's speaking off-script - like when he's killing time with Eisen in the broadcast booth at the Combine. He seems much less willing to make authoritative-sounding pronouncements and firm predictions, when he does this, it often seems forced. He seems much more comfortable being balanced and nuanced in ways that aren't really part of the show that broadcasters want to put on.

He seems like the kind of guy who could be technically sound and objective, and work well with scouts, but also likely to be completely out of his element with management politics.

Where I think Mayock would be great is tweeting his player observations directly from Shrine Game and Senior Bowl practice weeks as they're taking place. Not just the games ... the practices.

After Gruden gets Mayock fired in two years, we should start a GoFundMe to pay Mayock to do that.

Of course, but I wouldn't feel the same way if Mel Kiper were hired. Kiper doesn't know much football, Mayock has a greater understanding of the game. Kiper just googles "top college players" and comes up with his draft board.

I bet Mayock is making 3x what he was at the NFLN

Much better than the Overrated Patriots Caseiro.

I would take Kiper over Caseiro 24/7 even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. Caseiro should change his name to Bagel or O-fer based on Draft success.

I think too we have to see...i like him as a person honestly

It’s a unicorn job that pays extremely well and you live in California. If you’re fired, you are paid off and he can come back to scouting and broadcasting. What’s not to like?
Actually Vegas soon....and who knows where they'll play next year ...........

How are your takes so consistently this hot?

Well it's said that BB has the final say so maybe I'm a little hard on Caseiro or he's just a useless puppet.

I would drink the BB Coaching or Scheming Coolaid any day of the week. His Draft Coolaid hell No!
