Glazer: Pats Interested in Trading For “Premium” WR

Of all the names being thrown around in this thread, the player I’d be happiest to trade for is Emmanuel Sanders.

if we do bring in another premium WR, i kind of feel like that's Bill waving the white flag on the defense and the patriots going full speed into the shoot out mode.

Scoring points helps your defense. Forces the opponent into throwing situations, makes them more predictable, makes them more likely to make mistakes.

I don't think this is going to happen. I like Demaryius Thomas but I think he costs too much. If the Patriots could get Mike Evans, that would be incredible, but I don't see it happening given that the Bucs have said they're not even trading DeSean Jackson, who requested a trade. Emmanuel Sanders would be great too. Golden Tate's an upcoming free agent but I doubt the Lions part with him. I think Garcon is better than others do but I don't think he's an upgrade over Hogan. Larry Fitzgerald is the perennial candidate for a trade and it would be incredible but I can't imagine him leaving Arizona.

I do think the defensive players possibly available are better. If the Patriots could get Chris Harris, that would be remarkable. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is a good safety.

Like everybody else I want the Pats to load up on D, but trying to party like it's 2007 (minus the ending, anyway) isn't the worst idea I've ever heard either. Especially as the rules keep getting more hostile to defenses in general.

I’d rather upgrade the defense but I’ll take a shiny new WR over nothing that’s for sure.

Could it be a Mike Evans kinda guy?
Would love it
Id look at maybe
Parker from Miami may cost a second but could be worth it.
We could also buy low on Tyler Boyd from Cincinatti. Hes a good second wr.

Do you know what "buy low" means
Yes on first glance I understand the logic however we are dealing with the Bengals and he hasn't made a house hold name for himself yet.
I think he will which is why I'm saying to buy.

Actually he has this year 3rd year Breakout??

I think it's smoke.......mid season is an inefficient time to go blowing substantial resources on a receiver......prospects of productivity are low

Haha right. We’re suddenly rushing to offer a 2 for Parker after 1 good game? When he’s been a healthy scratch for the past few weeks and has always struggled to stay healthy?

The Bengals are nowhere near to giving up on the season. Focus on whomever might help from the rosters of the Giants, Raiders, Cardinals, Browns, Bucs, and 49ers.

I am predicting we trade for OBJ

Like the talent.
Hate the personality.
Wonder where we free this money to take on his rediculous contract.

Agree on most of that, but by an upgrade I meant the ability to actually play and contribute. Hollister had one great catch against the Jaguars, next thing you know he was hobbling around and favoring his leg. And he hasnt been playing much (or at all) since then. Allen is a fairly good blocker but when the passing play is set to unfold, he acts like a guy who happens to be on the field for no apparent reason. Patriots had great two-pronged TE punch with Bennett, even with Tim Wright, nowadays it is nearly impossible to replicate that with oft-injured Hollister or statue like Allen.

Wright was pretty much blocking averse. He wasn't even as willing to block as a Pats' WR. That's why he only lasted the one season in NE. It may be one of the reasons that he's still looking for work in the NFL since being cut this season by both the Lions and the Chiefs.

You have the sequence incorrect wrt Hollister's injuries. He was out wk-1 with a hammy, then played through it in wk-2 v. the Jags. He was off the injury report completely for the first two practices of wk-3 (no hammy issue), and then suffered a chest injury (highly unlikely to become chronic) that kept him out for wks-3 & 4. He played in wks 5 & 6 (mostly on ST), before re-injuring his hammy and being out wk-7 and, now, wk-8.

So, neither Hollister or Engram missed any time to injury as rookies, and both have now missed 3 games this season to leg injuries - Hollister/hamstring; Engram/knee.

Allen isn't merely "fairly good" as a blocker, he's probably among the top 3 or 4 in the league (as is Gronk). Martellus Bennett was also a top-10 blocker. And that "two-pronged attack" with Bennett and Gronk back in 2016 spanned only 6 games and about 350 snaps - from game #4 thru game #9 - when Gronk was healthy. The Pats lost two of those six games, including being shut out by the Bills.

Hollister was a very willing blocker as a rookie, he was simply bad at it - about the same level as Engram. Engram was successful as a receiver in the Giants' system, but then, so was Will Tye. Tye was in the Pats system from mid-October last season, through OTAs and Camp, and still didn't "get it". I wouldn't bet on Engram being able to pick up enough of it between now and the end of the season to make an impact. The odds are much better that Hollister will heal up and contribute something.

All of which is why I made the point of noting that Engram wasn't a lock to be an upgrade over Hollister unless Hollister was on IR.

He will only count for something like 774K this year.

His contract isn’t that bad either for the next 5 years for a true #1 WR

If traded the Giants are on the hook for all the guaranteed money.

Can’t dispute the personality.

It’s evident the guy loves football and that’s right up the Pats ally.

The Bengals are in first place in their division and Boyd's an inexpensive young player who's enjoying a breakout season with receiving production that is twice anyone on the Patriots not named James White. In what world is this the low point of his value? In what world would they trade him?

A trade for OBJ makes me fear for Gronk’s future here.
