Glazer: Pats Interested in Trading For “Premium” WR

49ers should trade us George Kittle at a discount, they owe us one.

Do they though? I mean Jimmy G is on IR. In time, we might be the one who "owes them'

However, yeahhhh, they should hook us up with Kittle.

The Pats had the inside info on Kittle and passed why I have no idea. But now we have can't catch Allen and can't get on the Field Hollister...we are in great shape there.

See our defense as priority to bolster but Thomas and Gordon together sounds intriguing.Thomas is still a great route runner but playing with Lynch or Keenum does not create opportunity for him to show what he's got.Let's see what will happen.

Thomas is past his prime, not what he used to be three or four years back. He would be good complementary piece, though, the defense would have to account for him anyway and that would leave somebody else open. Not sure he is worth anything beyond 4th rounder.
Problem is, not too many premium receivers on teams whose season is already over. OBJ is far too expensive. Maybe if we could snag Evan Engram as another TE threat. Hilton is always injured or concussed. Bills and Browns dont have any receivers to begin with. Raiders are in a midst of a fire sale but their best WR now could be Seth Roberts. Jared Cook seems like a most viable option there. To cut the long story short, unless we somehow land Sanders in a strange turn of events, I dont see us improving WR position. TE, maybe.

According to Miguel, the Pats have about $5.25M in cap space. From what I understand, somewhere between $2.5M - $3.0M of that is needed to cover weekly roster bonuses and incentives. That does not include the potential cost of covering another injury.

So, the Pats have between $2.25M and $2.75M to spend on a new player. Maybe +/- $0.5M more, depending on what remains of the salary of the player who is cut to make room for the new guy. So, figure around $3.25M to spend without making another move to free up cap space.

Thomas' remaining 2018 salary would hit the Pats' 2018 cap for $4.5M

Engram is about the same size as Hollister, and only slightly more athletic. He's still poor at run-blocking and barely adequate in pass-pro (although he's apparently dropping fewer passes this season than he did as a rookie). Engram also has missed three games this season with a knee injury, and he hasn't contributed as extensively on ST as Hollister does. H'd hit the Pats 2018 cap for about $500k (Hollister's remaining 2018 cap hit is about $300k, whether he's on IR or the active roster).

Unless Hollister is headed for IR with his hamstring issue, Engram doesn't seem like a sure-fire upgrade. Engram would still need to learn the Pats system - an even steeper hill to climb for a TE than it is for a WR (according to BB himself).

Cook would be a slight upgrade over Engram in blocking, generally. He'd hit the Pats 2018 cap for about $2.65M. He's also 31 years old and doesn't play ST at all. And, again, there's the learning curve.

The advantage to acquiring Engram is that he's young and still has two years left on his rookie deal after 2018, so he'd be a cheap investment toward the future - exactly why the Giants are unlikely to part with him.

I would hope giving up high picks for a premium wr doesn’t mean dealing a 1 or 2 for Thomas. He’s not even the wr I want from the broncos.

I can see Demaryius as a possibility.
Aj Green Denandre Hopkins pipe dreams.
Golden Tate Marvin Jones Desean Jackson Demaryious Thomas Emanuel Sanders all possibilties.
Ill add another in there
Julio Jones hasnt had a Td this season grtting up there in age familarity with management on both teams.
Would cost at least a second but I could see it being possible.
Here is another darkhorse candidate.
Martavius Bryant the quote on quote white tiger top talent complete knucklehead drowning in Oakland supposedly we called Pitt about him before they dealt him.
If its me im bringing in Collins and Peterson and Old friend of Mcdaniels Demaryious Thomas.
Sanders would be lethal in this offense.
Get your popcorn Ready.
Its all gravy for me I got my binkie Josh Gordon and once hes 90 percent of his ability this offense will ball against anyone.

Agree on most of that, but by an upgrade I meant the ability to actually play and contribute. Hollister had one great catch against the Jaguars, next thing you know he was hobbling around and favoring his leg. And he hasnt been playing much (or at all) since then. Allen is a fairly good blocker but when the passing play is set to unfold, he acts like a guy who happens to be on the field for no apparent reason. Patriots had great two-pronged TE punch with Bennett, even with Tim Wright, nowadays it is nearly impossible to replicate that with oft-injured Hollister or statue like Allen.

I would like engram as the 2TE in this offense but I figure it’s going to be tough to pry him from NY. He’s still cheap for the next few years and IMO a valuable part of their offense going forward.

Could it be a Mike Evans kinda guy?

He does have a contract that is surprisingly easy for the Bucs to trade. They didn’t give him a signing bonus, so there wouldn’t be any 2019 dead cap left behind from trading him. Beckham, for comparison, had a $20 million signing bonus that would leave $16 million in dead money on the Giants’ 2019 cap if traded.

if we do bring in another premium WR, i kind of feel like that's Bill waving the white flag on the defense and the patriots going full speed into the shoot out mode.

I don't. It's a complimentary game. If you add a player whether on offense of defense and that helps the overall points differential per game what's the difference?
