Patriots interested in CBs before the trade deadline

Roughly $550k (gross) either way. The "net" savings would be less because you have to deduct whatever they're paying the player who replaces him.

However, if Rowe were to be cut or traded to create a roster spot for Dawson, the savings would be somewhat more than with signing a new player, since the Pats have been paying Dawson his $480k salary all along.

But then, Rowe himself is currently injured. Reports are that he re-aggravated his perennial groin injury during the game in CHI, and he wasn't at practice today. So, he can't be cut, and it's unlikely that anyone would trade for him.

He can be IRed and then given an Injury settlement.

This can’t be. I’ve been told with confidence that the defense is good enough as-is.

Nice jab Johnny Cochran.

"If it ain't elite they can't compete "

Not asking them to be elite. Just asking them not to suck balls.

If the ST and the Offense played without turning the ball over or gifting the other team short fields the last two games would have been double digit wins. Which means that in a complimentary sense the defense was doing enough to win.

Holding teams to FGs on short fields and without rest between possessions requires an elite effort which they aren't elite so why put them in the position to do so?

If they upgrade the defense before the trade deadline all the better. They definitely can improve.

Anyway I'm looking forward to Rodgers coming in to town to see how they do vs an elite QB.

Wheatley was drafted in the 2008 draft which was 11 drafts ago. The fact that your obtuse enough to include a rookie in Dawson in there as being horrific also takes away from the credibility of your argument.

Butler turned in a journeyman career overall.

First of all I said 10 years as a timeframe not 10 drafts so and as far as I'm concerned 2008 was 10 years ago.

Second I said the list is horrific. I didn't rate any of the players as an individual. But I can show you how I valued their careers as Patriots.

Wheatley - injury plagued and when healthy a non factor.
Butler - decent rookie season but was waived just after 2 seasons after a very bad sophomore year. Had a goodish career with the Colts but why the hell should I care what he does for that rotten franchise
Ras IR - same as Wheatley with medical red flags all over him prior to the draft.
Cyrus Jones - waived after 2 years, now again with the team as a special teamer.
Dawson - too soon to judge.

So yes I stand by my evaluation that this list is horrific. Maybe I should've added that Dawson is too soon to be judged but he'd have to be a multiple years Pro Bowl CB for me to judge the list differently. I mean 4 2nd rounders and barely one decent season. If that's not horrific I really don't know what is.

Darius Butler was one of the few that had success once he left NE.

When I think of Logan Ryan I laugh at how much money the titans are paying for our cb duo a few years back.

To further the irony, the Pats now have the Titans former stalwart CB - JMac - who's costing the Pats about half of what Butler is making this season, and who's arguably playing more consistently.

Wheatley and Dowling are prime examples of what the Pats typically do with 2nd round picks - go after prospects who showed 1st-round talent in college, but who dropped due to their injury histories. Folks can scream and cry and condemn it all they want, but it's part of the strategy the Pats have chosen to go with to compensate for always drafting late.

Butler was kind of the Byron Jones/Obi Melifonwu of his day (2009). Extremely high SPARQ score and decent college production made him worth a shot. He simply didn't have enough assignment discipline as a boundary corner. He freelanced a lot and gave up as many big plays as he made. He ended up with a solid career as a slot corner/FS for Indy through last season (9 years total), but he just didn't work out with the Pats in the long run.

Cyrus, like Bethel Johnson and Chad Jackson, was undoubtedly drafted as a returner rather than as a potential starter at his position. This is something else that Pats have often done with 2nd-rounders. Johnson never really developed as a WR, though he did contribute. Jackson blew up his knee during the AFCCG at the end of his rookie season and never recovered. Cyrus got a bad case of the yips as a rookie, and looked better in his second Camp before tearing an ACL. He just didn't offer enough this season to surpass any of the Pats newer acquisitions.

Personally, I tag all of this under #taking-a-flyer, #sometimes-the-magic-works, and #sh*thappens. I've really never understood why people get so upset about this, or why people put so much emphasis on "the 2nd round" or on draft pedigree at all. It's not as if the Pats have totally failed to acquire younger players who've proved useful, if not invaluable. There are a lot more ways to build a roster than just the draft.

That evens out with the amount of times the defense has turned the opposing offense over (the one thing that they're doing very well - 14 times). They're still allowing that kind of yardage, 3rd down percentage, and most importantly - points. I'm actually more looking forward to seeing how they look against the Bills. That offense has been so unbelievably bad that any defense that's worth half its weight in salt should be able to hold that offense to 7 points or less.

You want to see this defense hold the Bills who has averaged 12 pts a game to 7? I haven't watched any of their recent games so I wouldn't know how realistic that is or not although I know the general consensus is that they're the worst team in the league.

Personally I want to see how the defense performs when they aren't dealing with offensive or ST miscues. I think expecting them to hold the Bills to their season average minus garbage time points is fair.

Bills put up 17-21 on Monday. Scrub QBs look like all pros against this defense on occasion.

This is Derek Anderson quarterbacking this team. It should be expected that any defense that is at least halfway decent should be able to hold them under their season average. Additionally, their average is actually 11 PPG, boosted by their 27 point output in that strange game against Minnesota (who would blow the Bills completely out 9 times out of 10) in Week 2. I don't think hoping to see the defense hold them 4 points under their season average with a back-up quarterback is a false expectation.

Dude...

No.

Don't be that guy. Complimentary football doesn't mean that the defense can suck balls because the offense is great.

We know the defense is average at best right now but I think they're good enough to get enough stops to allow the great offense to win games. I do not think they are good enough to handle multiple short fields, offensive fumbles or int's, squib kicks or a 97 yard KR. I think they have been improving and I think they are further along at least communication wise than they were at this point last season. I think they are better up front than last season although I'll admit that you were correct about Shelton and he has been a disappointment and thus not as good up front as I expected.

Anyway we have the hapless Bills and Rodgers coming up. I think they win both of those games if they don't ask the defense to make up for offensive or ST deficiencies. They have enough of their own to make up for. Kick the ball out of the endzone and hold on to the ball.

Ok. That's fair.
