Perspective.

Under BB and Brady, Pats have started 2-2 in 2003, 2005, 2012, 2014, and 2017.

All 5 years they made the playoffs... 4 to the AFCCG, 3 to the Super Bowl and 2 championships.

"But what if they lose to Miami this week? They'll be 1-3!! TOAST!!!!"

There is precedent for that too.

Once in the BB/Brady era, they lost a BRUTAL game to Miami, 30-10, that put their record at 1-3.

Once. In 2001.

You expect a lot from a monosyllabic fanbase, although they can reach for ****suckers or motherf*ckers at the drop of a pass.

Yes but all you have is past performance to hope it will get better, there's no tangible evidence on the field.

The Pats have bad defensive personnel and limited offensive talent, in 2014 they had Revis, Browner, Collins, Jones, Wilfork, Ninkovich and better and younger versions of McCourty, Hightower, Chung.

Hightower is a shell of what he was, McCourty isn't as good as he was 4 years ago and every other position is massively downgraded from then.

Some of those teams were stacked with talent, especially 03 and 14, I believe the offense will eventually fix itself but the defense is always going to be a massive concern, you can't fix lack of talent.

The Pats don't have 1 single blue chip defensive player who you'd consider having on an All Pro team.

Not every bad start to the season is the same. The talent level on both sides of the ball is much worse than 2014 and on D it's light years worse than 2001

What do you expect after the league keeps stealing picks to create parity?
We got screwed over, it is what it is.

We can’t blame all of our problems on losing one 1st round pick.

The situation with defensive talent is indeed the primary "yes, but..." response to "we've been here before and succeeded anyway."

I really want to be an optimist but that problem looms large.

No, but I can cite this (and the "spygate" penalty) as reasons for lack of talent.

It's also about team defense/team play. Let's put game 4 aside (win or lose) and focus on what happens to the offense once Edleman returns.

When that happens teams won't be able to double Gronk and Edleman. This means one of them will have an advantage in our offense (I would assume they continue to double Gronk until Edelman proves he's back and functioning near 100%...which I expect he will).

If the offense is making longer drives, this will affect field position and give the defense more yards to win the battle on 4 downs to cause a punt (but, the defense definitely seems to be an issue). Plus, more offense means the defense has less time on the field...so perhaps there's a double benefit.

There's definitely cause for concerns and we obviously don't have the backup talent we are used to having and will require the team to generally stay healthier than most years. But, there's no reason to say the season is in doubt for a few more weeks.

Is that the last time they've had a losing record?

Edit: they were 4-3 in 2002, but Christ, are we a lucky fanbase.

Through three games, the 2018 defense is allowing 6 fewer points per game than the 2017 defense.

Through three games, the 2018 offense is scoring 14 fewer points per game than the 2017 offense.

I really don't think the defense is the biggest problem at the moment.

True. And I'm clinging to the hope it will get better. But the 3 opponents in 2017 were the Chiefs, Saints and Texans, which was the first game of Watson's one month tear through the NFL.

This season, we've faced an obviously poor Texans offense, a Fournette-less Jaguars that scored 6 the following week, and an 0-2 Lions team that couldn't run the football.

It's obviously not an equal comparison to accurately rate defensive performance.

We should all remember the following don’t ever write TB12 or BB off.

Do we have problems? Yes, but we will fix them. We always do.

Let’s get behind the team and get them going again. I will never write this team off.

I’m sorry but the defense can’t fricken get off the field. If it did Brady will have more possessions to score points. Conversely if the Pats offense bothered to put together longer scoring drives it would keep the defense fresh.

I agree about the Texans' offense looking weak. But it's just as "early" in the season for those teams as it is for the Pats. We don't yet know how strong the Titans' defense will turn out to be, and we really don't know how the Lions will end up.

Brady can't get a first down,

if he did the defense probably wouldn't be gassed as early as they are.
