Sony Michel: Getting Ready

Unless he got concussed in individual drills . nothing would surprise me with the way this unit is going.. ;)

I think that Mr. Develin may need to provide verification of his whereabouts between the start of practice and the end of individual drills.

I dont understand how his knee injury could be that serious, Willis Mcgahee had his knee bent into an L in the opposite direction and came back just fine from that.. what could be worse than his injury?

This was his injury for perspective:

It's unbelievable that McGahee played (relatively effectively!) into his early 30s. He had a long career for an NFL running back, and people were worried he would never walk again after that.

The doctors perspective is interesting, let's see what happens.

If this guy’s coming back he better be 100 percent. I really don’t want the coaching staff to blow it here by rushing him back quickly.
I don't think anyone does. Kenjon Barner is the next halfback on the depth chart if Michel doesn't play. Barner has one career start in four season. See the problem now?

Its not the reconstruction that ends careers. The ligament grafts they do now are extremely reliable. After surgery for a blown out knee the load pattern inside the joint is forever changed, causing gradual cartilage degeneration which can eventually lead to a bone on bone situation from which there is no return, just management. IIRC its what ended Curtis Martins career.

It's not ideal, but it's better than risking a more serious injury. With Michel, they should keep the next few years of his career in mind rather than the next couple games

Honestly I'm less concerned with how he'll play. There's no question about his talent. I'm more interested in how much he'll play and if he can string together consecutive weeks without being rested or "managed". That injury is no joke and how much he plays as the season goes on will be telling for the longevity of his career.

That article assumes a "bone on bone" condition based on a Lombardi report which may be correct or not. We do not really know. Sony did have an ACL tear years ago and did have an injury while at Georgia. That is all we really know. You can think BB is crazy for taking another 1st rounder with a knee injury history or Lombardi knows he will get more clicks with a "bone on bone" scoop. I think it is in between - Sony has a knee history but not as flamboyant as the Internet report of bone-on-bone.

Michel had ACL surgery in High School. The bone on bone potential was discussed after that. Since then UGA managed him well. He's the 3rd leading rusher in school history. He missed a part of a game last year before returning the very next week.

'Managed' should not be ignored. But a setback from draining fluid after a tweak should not be over stated.

Michel can be something special, Kareem Hunt special. You don't risk that for a short term issue vs a hardass D like Jacksonville. Better they activate Webb with White, Devlin and Barner if Burkhead can't go. Then use Michel vs soft as grapes Detroit and Miami (in NE).

I'm not a doctor but I play one here at Patsfans....so,any of you Kildares know a good 24 hour pharmacy where I can load up on sleeping pills?

oh wait....I'll just keep reading...

Patriots have had way too many early round misses/injuries in the 2015-2018 drafts. We need Michel to hit big.

I guess I "jumped the gun" a little with this thread.

Every team has too many hits and misses in every draft, this is not unique to the New England Patriots..

The draft is not the end all in team building..

just keep him away from develin

I blame Patterson. That play should have never occurred. TB12 had the first down the play before on the QB keeper but Patterson wasn't set.

Speaking of, did Patterson play any snaps after that?

He runs into an o-lineman's ass on half his attempts. Plus, he fumbled (returned for a TD) in his first game with the Saints.

The only reply to that comment is:

Drafting a running back with that injury history that high was dumb. Belichick is the greatest ever, but he's not perfect. For whatever reason (hopes of reliving his genius in drafting a certain tight end with back problems?), Belichick indulges in this sort of stupidity every couple of years.

The notion that expressing a quite rational concern about Michel's knee going forward is "playing doctor" or coming it the Nervous Nelly or being insufficiently hardheadedly macho on some football forum or contriving a phony hot take is ridiculous. Taking note of the risks inherent in drafting such a player and seeing those risks as outweighing the possible rewards is a valid perspective, whether it proves ultimately right or wrong..

The argument that players have rebounded from catastrophic knee injuries in the past may or may not be apt: Michel's problems, being chronic, seem to be the product in part at least of the structure/makeup of his knees, and those kinds of problems can have more dire implications going forward than an injury/reconstruction scenario. Recall Easley; recall Mitchell.

Such a view is reasonable at this point whatever Michel's eventual contribution, but - the proof being in the pudding - I would point out that Michel's contribution to this point is absolutely nothing.
