October 6, 2019: Pats rout Washington, 33-7
New England wins fifth straight to start the season
Brady throws for 348 yards, 3 TD

Sunday October 6, 2019 at 1:00
Week 5, Game 5 at FedEx Field
New England Patriots 33, Washington Redskins 7
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Jay Gruden
QBs: Tom Brady, Colt McCoy
Odds: New England favored by 15½
TV: CBS; Greg Gumbel, Trent Green; Melanie Collins
Patriots improve to 5-0, Washington drops to 0-5

The Pats defense limited Washington to one first down conversion on 11 third down attempts, as the Pats cruised to an easy win in Landover, Maryland.

Tom Brady threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns, and the Patriots got another strong performance from their defense in a 33-7 rout of the winless Redskins on Sunday.
Now in his 20th season, Brady whisked by Brett Favre into third place on the career list with 71,923 yards passing. Brady now trails only Peyton Manning (71,940 yards) and Drew Brees (74,845).
Brady also edged closer to Manning's record 539 touchdown passes, connecting with Julian Edelman, Brandon Bolden and Ryan Izzo to bring his total to 527.
His prowess on the football field is rarely surprising, but the reaction he received was certainly unexpected. Thousands of fans in the crowd wore blue Patriots jerseys -- many of them No. 12 with BRADY on the back -- and were cheering for the reigning Super Bowl champions from warmups to well after the final whistle.

1. A defensive masterpiece...: Yes, it was against the Redskins. But give New England credit for what was a tremendous defensive effort. The Patriots sacked Colt McCoy six times, intercepted him once and kept him off-balance all day. And though they surrendered a 65-yard touchdown run to wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. on a jet sweep in the first quarter, they held the Redskins to a paltry 2.98 yards per play otherwise.

The striking thing about this New England front is that it's so unpredictable. It's not as simple as double-teaming someone like Khalil Mack or Aaron Donald. Five players recorded at least half a sack Sunday, from linebackers Dont'a Hightower (1 1/2 sack) and Jamie Collins (1) to rookie defensive end Chase Winovich (1).

Christopher Price's analysis and live stream:

Same as above, but from the perspective of a Washington beat writer:
The key moments from the Redskins’ 33-7 loss to the Patriots

Julian Edelman proved tough to cover and tackle throughout this game. He ran some really nice crossing routes and out routes, including a beautiful toe-tapping diving catch on the sideline.
As expected, the New England offense was efficient, moving the ball for most of the game against this Washington defense. Brady was off target a few times, and he made a very uncharacteristically bad decision for his interception, but he was otherwise clinical and precise driving his team down the field.

Rookie edge Chase Winovich ended the Redskins’ first drive by beating Donald Penn inside for a sack, and Dont’a Hightower sacked McCoy on a bootleg to end a Redskins' second-quarter drive. Unfortunately, this was a theme that continued for most of the game, as Colt McCoy was given precious few opportunities to work from a clean pocket. And when he was given time, the coverage — as has been all year — was far too good for this receiving corps.

New England opened up after halftime with five rushing attempts on the first six plays, and added a couple of well-executed passes to running backs to put together a crisp 75-yard drive. On the next possession, Sony Michel broke off a 25-yard run over left tackle, then capped an 88-yard, six-play march with 14-yard scoring surge.

After the half, Michel carried the ball 12 times for 81 yards (finishing with 91 yards on the day). Brady threw it only 11 times, but he hit on nine passes for 142 yards and two scores. Even with Jarrett Stidham leading the backups for the final two series, New England gained 244 yards on 31 snaps in the second half, increasing their per-play average from 4.9 to 7.9 from the first half to the second.

HIDDEN STARS
LB Kyle Van Noy
Van Noy was overshadowed by Hightower, but he had a solid game, himself, leading the Patriots in total pressures.

CB Jonathan Jones
Jones allowed just one catch and one target resulting in a 5-yard catch. Can’t get much better than that on 43 snaps.

Jones has allowed just 69 yards from the slot all season. He also forced a fumble that was recovered by Collins on Sunday.

Ryan Izzo with a 4th quarter touchdown; it would turn out to be the only TD of his NFL career.

Sony Michel rushed for 91 yards, and had 32 yards and a TD on three receptions.

Dont'a Hightower and Michael Bennett combine for one of the Pats five sacks.

Julian Edelman literally leaves a Washington defender in the dust.

Brandon Bolden's 29-yard touchdown catch put the patriots up 19-7 early in the third quarter.

October 6, 1996: Bledsoe tops Testaverde in shootout
Drew has near-perfect game: 310 yards, 4 TD, zero turnovers or sacks
Bruschi's blocked punt for TD seals the 46-38 win over Ravens

Sunday October 6, 1996 at 1:00
Week 6, Game 5 at Memorial Stadium
New England Patriots 46, Baltimore Ravens 38
Head Coaches: Bill Parcells, Ted Marchibroda
QBs: Drew Bledsoe, Vinny Testaverde
Odds: New England favored by 2
TV: NBC; Don Criqui, Beasley Reece
Patriots improve to 3-2, Ravens drop to 2-3

Drew Bledsoe threw four touchdowns and Tedy Bruschi scored on a blocked punt to lead the Patriots to victory in a shootout over Vinny Testaverde and the Ravens in 1996.

The Patriots held fourth quarter leads of 38-14 and 46-22, but Vinny Testaverde (29-45, 353 yards, 3 TD, 1 Int) kept bringing the Ravens back. Bledsoe had a huge game, going 25-39 for 310 yards with four touchdowns and no picks. Shawn Jefferson had 88 yards receiving and two TDs, Terry Glenn had 88 yards as well, and Ben Coates had seven catches for 83 yards and one touchdown.

Tedy Bruschi had two sacks as well as the touchdown on the blocked punt with 7:53 remaining, for what turned out to be the winning points.

This was the Pats first trip to Baltimore since playing the Colts in 1983. For assistant head coach/defensive backs coach Bill Belichick this was an opportunity to defeat the club that had fired him and moved from Cleveland to Baltimore. On the other sideline was Belichick's mentor, Ted Marchibroda.

Drew Bledsoe had a big game for New England, and he got a lot of help--from the Baltimore Ravens’ secondary.
Bledsoe threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns Sunday in the Patriots’ 46-38 victory over Baltimore, a performance that was made possible because of all the mistakes made by the Ravens’ secondary.
After an unspectacular first half, Bledsoe was seven for seven for 104 yards and two touchdown passes on New England’s first two possessions of the second half, which enabled the Patriots (3-2) to turn a 20-14 halftime advantage into a 35-14 lead midway through the third period.
He had plenty of help from Baltimore’s mistake-prone defensive backfield, which committed key penalties and blew coverages in allowing the game to get away.
Baltimore added two touchdowns late in the game to make the final score more respectable, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome Bledsoe’s show in the third period.

Drew Bledsoe passed for 310 yards and 4 touchdowns as the New England Patriots held off a fourth quarter comeback by the Baltimore Ravens to post their third straight victory, 46-38. The 46 points by the Patriots was the highest point production of the season in the NFL and the most by a Patriots team since 1984 when they posted 50 in a win over Indianapolis (11/18/84). Bledsoe turned in his best performance of the season, connecting on 25 of 39 attempts for 310 yards and four touchdowns. He was not sacked, nor was he intercepted in the game for just the ninth time in his career.

Shawn Jefferson caught four passes for 88 yards and had his first multiple touchdown game of his career with scores from 7 and 35 yards out. Ben Coates led all Patriots receivers with seven receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a pass for a two-point conversion. The Patriots scored on seven of their first nine possessions, including six straight, to establish a 38-14 lead early in the forth quarter. But, the Ravens responded with 24 fourth quarter points to pull to within eight with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Vinny Testaverde completed 29 of 45 passes for 353 yards and three and three touchdowns.

Michael Jackson led all receivers wit eight catches for 128 yards and scored two touchdowns. Derrick Alexander also eclipsed the 100-yard plateau with 123 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. It was the second consecutive game that the Patriots defense surrendered over 100 receiving two different receivers.

Mike Bartrum’s first NFL reception was a one-yard scoring pass from Bledsoe on New England’s first possession of the second half. It gave the Patriots a 28-14 lead after a two-point conversion, and came with help from the Ravens.
After Bledsoe burned cornerback Antonio Langham on consecutive plays--a 14-yard completion to Shawn Jefferson and a 28-yarder to Terry Glenn--cornerback Donny Brady was whistled for interfering with Glenn in the end zone.
Bartrum’s pass-receiving debut came on the next play.
The penalty on Brady was only one of the 13 infractions called on Baltimore during the game. In all, the Ravens (2-3), the least-penalized team in the NFL entering the contest, lost 146 yards on penalties.
The victory was New England’s first on the road this season, while the Ravens--also winless away from home--lost in Baltimore for the first time.

On the third play of the game Jim Plunkett hit Reggie Rucker for a 69-yard touchdown, and the Patriots cruised to a 42-3 victory over the Baltimore Colts.

Baltimore missed a 31-yard field goal on their first possession, and the Patriots drove 80 yards in ten plays, with Darryl Stingley scoring on a 23-yard end around to the right side. The Patriots forced two Colt punts, the second of which was fumbled and recovered by Andy Johnson. Five plays later Mack Herron scored on a 5-yard rush, and 1:40 into the second quarter the Patriots already had a 21-0 lead.

In the second half Plunkett threw a touchdown pass to Sam Cunningham, a second TD to Rucker, and John Tarver scored on a 7-yard run. With the big early lead Plunkett didn't have to do much, going 8-16 for 141 yards and three touchdowns, before giving way to **** Shiner and Neil Graff.

Over the course of the 84 games played between the Patriots and the Colts, the 39-point differential is the widest margin of victory ever. That's amazing, considering this series includes the Jonas Gray game, the 45-7 playoff win, the botched fake punt, and more.

A number of discouraging misadventures befell the New York Titans at the Polo Grounds last night, most of which were the handiwork of Babe Parilli and the footwork of Gino Cappelletti, distinguished employes of the Boston Patriots.

Babe Parilli threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter, giving the Patriots a 24-0 lead over the Titans of New York. After NY cut the lead to 24-14 in the third quarter, the Patriots scored four consecutive times for a convincing 43-14 pummeling of their AFL East rivals.

This was the Patriots' third straight win, putting them in a tie with the Houston Oilers in the AFL East.

While Parilli did go 14-23-234 with 3 TD and no picks, the star of the day was Jim Colclough. The Medford native had a career-best 142 yards receiving.

Early in the second quarter Colclough caught a pass at the 50 and ran it all the way in for a 63-yard TD, giving the Pats a 10-0 lead - and at the start of the fourth quarter his 19-yard reception set up anothe touchdown that put the game away. Colclough finished with 142 yards on just four receptions.

In the second half the Titans closed the gap to 24-14 on an 86-yard TD to future Hall of Famer Don Mayanrd. The Pats responded with the second of three Gino Cappelletti field goals, then linebacker Tom Addison's pick-six put the Patriots up 34-14.
