Patriots 33-7 WSH (Oct 6, 2019) Game Recap - ESPN
Expert recap and game analysis of the New England Patriots vs. Washington NFL game from October 6, 2019 on ESPN.
www.espn.com
Tom Brady threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns, and the Patriots got another strong performance from their defense in a 33-7 rout of the winless Redskins on Sunday.
Now in his 20th season, Brady whisked by Brett Favre into third place on the career list with 71,923 yards passing. Brady now trails only Peyton Manning (71,940 yards) and Drew Brees (74,845).
Brady also edged closer to Manning's record 539 touchdown passes, connecting with Julian Edelman, Brandon Bolden and Ryan Izzo to bring his total to 527.
His prowess on the football field is rarely surprising, but the reaction he received was certainly unexpected. Thousands of fans in the crowd wore blue Patriots jerseys -- many of them No. 12 with BRADY on the back -- and were cheering for the reigning Super Bowl champions from warmups to well after the final whistle.
Tom Brady, New England Patriots cruise past floundering Washington Redskins

1. A defensive masterpiece...: Yes, it was against the Redskins. But give New England credit for what was a tremendous defensive effort. The Patriots sacked Colt McCoy six times, intercepted him once and kept him off-balance all day. And though they surrendered a 65-yard touchdown run to wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. on a jet sweep in the first quarter, they held the Redskins to a paltry 2.98 yards per play otherwise.
The striking thing about this New England front is that it's so unpredictable. It's not as simple as double-teaming someone like Khalil Mack or Aaron Donald. Five players recorded at least half a sack Sunday, from linebackers Dont'a Hightower (1 1/2 sack) and Jamie Collins (1) to rookie defensive end Chase Winovich (1).

Patriots roll over Redskins, 33-7
Another dominant performance from the Patriots defense paved the way for a 33-7 win over the Redskins Sunday in Landover, Md. Sure, after a slow start, Tom Brady looked sharp over the last two quarters, finishing 28-for-42 for 348 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Sony Michel...

NFL Week 5 PFF ReFocused: New England Patriots 33, Washington Redskins 7
The Washington Redskins offered little resistance against the undefeated New England Patriots, as Tom Brady & Co. waltzed to a 33-7 victory in Week 5 of the 2019 NFL season.

Julian Edelman proved tough to cover and tackle throughout this game. He ran some really nice crossing routes and out routes, including a beautiful toe-tapping diving catch on the sideline.
As expected, the New England offense was efficient, moving the ball for most of the game against this Washington defense. Brady was off target a few times, and he made a very uncharacteristically bad decision for his interception, but he was otherwise clinical and precise driving his team down the field.
Rookie edge Chase Winovich ended the Redskins’ first drive by beating Donald Penn inside for a sack, and Dont’a Hightower sacked McCoy on a bootleg to end a Redskins' second-quarter drive. Unfortunately, this was a theme that continued for most of the game, as Colt McCoy was given precious few opportunities to work from a clean pocket. And when he was given time, the coverage — as has been all year — was far too good for this receiving corps.
5 takeaways from the Patriots' 33-7 win over Washington
COMMENTARY Five takeaways from the Patriots’ 33-7 rout of the Redskins, as Bill Belichick’s team moves to 5-0 … BRADY AND MICHEL BOTH RESPOND Through two quarters on Sunday, Tom Brady had attempted 31 passes, and the offense had executed 41 plays — yet all that opportunity had yielded just 12...

New England opened up after halftime with five rushing attempts on the first six plays, and added a couple of well-executed passes to running backs to put together a crisp 75-yard drive. On the next possession, Sony Michel broke off a 25-yard run over left tackle, then capped an 88-yard, six-play march with 14-yard scoring surge.
After the half, Michel carried the ball 12 times for 81 yards (finishing with 91 yards on the day). Brady threw it only 11 times, but he hit on nine passes for 142 yards and two scores. Even with Jarrett Stidham leading the backups for the final two series, New England gained 244 yards on 31 snaps in the second half, increasing their per-play average from 4.9 to 7.9 from the first half to the second.
Patriots-Redskins Takeaways, Metrics: Jonathan Jones Among Hidden Stars - NESN.com
This says more about the New England Patriots’ defense as a whole than it does about the player, but it’s remarkable Stephon Gilmore has been one of the unit’s poorest performing players through five weeks while still maintaining his high level of play from last season. Everything is relative...

HIDDEN STARS
LB Kyle Van Noy
Van Noy was overshadowed by Hightower, but he had a solid game, himself, leading the Patriots in total pressures.
CB Jonathan Jones
Jones allowed just one catch and one target resulting in a 5-yard catch. Can’t get much better than that on 43 snaps.
Jones has allowed just 69 yards from the slot all season. He also forced a fumble that was recovered by Collins on Sunday.

Dont'a Hightower and Michael Bennett combine for one of the Pats five sacks.
Julian Edelman literally leaves a Washington defender in the dust.
