OT: Jets name Darnold as starting QB

He might be bad, but his QB choices have been pretty awful. Hackenberg and Petty aren’t NFL calibre QBs and Fitzpatrick is a backup.

Fitzpatrick was okay. He's a guy that plays to his supporting cast.

Presumably he had some input into the Hackenberg choice.

Darnold will be good. Will he be a top 10 NFL QB? No idea. But the days of the Jets sucking year after year are coming to an end. Darnold will take the Jets to the playoffs multiple times in the coming year.

Everyone knew he would “look like” a promising pro quarterback right off the bat, due to his athleticism and his arm, on a practice field or in a scrimmage. As with every QB, though, it will all depend on how fast he can process information, make the right reads, and limit mistakes. Everyone knew he would “look like” a promising pro quarterback right off the bat, due to his athleticism and his arm, on a practice field or in a scrimmage. As with every QB, though, it will all depend on how fast he can process information, make the right reads, and limit mistakes. So far, I’ve seen absolutely nothing that tilts the Darnold scale towards either his optimists or skeptics.

Any one of the top rookie QBs could pass that bar.

What impressed myself, and most others were the other things... like making multiple reads, audibling, seeing blitzes ahead of time, pocket pressence to shift around w/o getting happy feet, knowing when to run...

Does he look especially great throwing on the run? Yes, but it was the mental things that have him starting Monday night.

I can't wait to see how he handles a non-vanilla NFL defense. Then even more importantly, how he bounces back from inevitable mistakes.

IMHO, decision-making is the most important element of success for a QB in the NFL, followed by accuracy, toughness (mental and physical), arm talent, and mobility, in that order. After this many years watching Brady, this is what has become most clear for me.

Thus in assessing Darnold, who I liked watching in college, my biggest question is about his decision-making and accuracy. His biggest issue last year in college was turning over the ball, both on INTs and fumbles, and the Pac 12 wasn’t all that strong as a conference last year. Now he is starting Game 1 with all the pressure that entails for even experienced QBs while simultaneously trying to correct his biggest flaw from last year. I think it’s a very tall order for him and was pretty surprised that Bowles didn’t wait until Darnold had a decent number of snaps through say 4 games backing up McCown (similar to how Parcells eased in Bledsoe behind Secules in Drew’s first year).

You were doing fine until the end. Bledsoe started week 1. Secules replaced him for a couple of games mid season.

Audibles against base, vanilla. non-gameplanned defenses in preseason is super-impressive, really.

I did not expect many here to be familiar with Darnold or how he has impressed in camp.

Pros
Can read a defense and audible out at the line.
Excellent pocket presence.
Accurate while rolling out or evading the rush.
Calm and cool in the pocket.
Rarely makes the same mistake twice.

Cons
Lacks accuracy on the deep ball
Reluctant to go deep
Needs to get out of the huddle faster
He's a rookie

As far as preseason goes he looked good. imo. Good enough to get the Jete fan's hopes up in lieu of another 8-8 season. But it will be a promising 8-8 season. Next season they'll go 8-8 and fire the HC and GM. The staff will install a new offensive scheme for Darnit to learn and they'll go 8-8 but it'll be because of learning a new system. And so on and so on and so on for the next 50 years.
