Patriots exploring trade options with Mitchell; team is high on Kenny britt

Trade Mitchell, a 4th, and Richards to seacocks for Earl Thomas?
His cap hit would be prohibitive. We already have 3 other starters in McC, Chung, and Harmon that all either make good money or were recently extended. Someone would have to go, and we’d have to replace them with a much higher cap hit. This player wouldn’t make much sense, especially when there are some other notable safeties that are available for 1/3 of the cost.

  1. The story is true
  2. The story is about lighting a fire under his ass
  3. The story is about generating interest in Britt (and/or others)

I'm fine with any of the above.

I thought the same scenarios

I cannot imagine them getting much (if anything) for Mitchell. That's not meant to be a knock on him because I was really hoping he would be back this year, but he had 400 yards in 2016 before missing an entire season to injury and is now completely up in the air. That's just not a good recipe for ROI.

I can’t imagine they’d do better than a conditional late round pick. I sense this leak is more of a “Mitchell is getting cut unless there’s an injury” type of deal. Hoping some team will trade them something - anything - that involves either a conditional pick or a player at another position who is also unlikely to make the team.

Assuming this report is accurate:

1.) With Edelman out...and Mitchell being traded for anything...we now have:

Hogan, Slater (Gunner), Matthews, and Patterson as locks, IMO.

Britt, Dorsett, Berrios, and McCarron are all competing for 2 spots...and one of them will have to show a lot in the first 4 weeks to stick around.

2.) Britt starting camp on PUP is not good news, IMO. Hollister too....NFI list.

3.) I liked the Lucien re-sign. He was great in camp in the summer of 2016...catching everything in sight when I watched him myself.

If this is the start of the end of Mitchell in New England, he'll always be fondly remembered by me for his big part in the 28-3 comeback.

Yep. He would be like JR Redmond. He did very little in New England, but had a big game against Oakland in the divisional round, then got out of bounds in the Super Bowl. That was good enough for me.

Just a thought, as long as they package richards in the Mitchell trade, I am fine!

Most of the time, a player on the PUP at the start of camp is often cautionary and nothing to be NumeroPimped about.

So who won the trade?

Arizona:

Chandler Jones. Lead all lineman in sacks, QB pressures, and set the edge at a high level. Top 3 finalist for NFC defensive player of the year.

New England:

Malcolm Mitchell: injury prone, trading block, May be out of the league soon

Joe Thuney: struggling. might be regulated to a backup role

Jonathan Cooper: out of the league

A one-note song gets boring pretty quickly.

4. He’s just not getting healthy.

We lost the trade, but all we really gave up was Chandler Jones’ 2016 season. He wasn’t coming back after that.

We WON the Super Bowl that year anyway, so oh well. It is what it is.
