Butler did not play at a high level last season.
He was a liability on alot of plays and Never came close to his previous level of play.
While you might be right, why decide to finally sit him on the biggest game of the year?

Even though his play was not up to par, Rowe is still not better than him. I'd rather have the guy at there who ended the drought in 2014 than Eric Rowe.

Your conclusion is based on the assumption that BB's decision wasn't good enough. We don't know that. We do know what his past decisions has delivered.

Hell I read a post (not yours) that implied he should have won more than 8. hahaha

"Sabotaged" 'threw the game to feed his ego' WTF??

Five isn't good enough. I wonder if six will finally satisfy the fan base.

Hopefully this won't tarnish his legacy. haha

We are so spoiled.
When you factor they've had the greatest QB in NFL history, coach, coaching staffs and rosters, they should have more than 5. They've let a lot of opportunities slip away and lost to inferior teams over the years in the playoffs.

They were going down a path of becoming the Atlanta Braves of the 90's in the NFL until Malcolm Butler saved the day and ended a 10 year drought. They rewarded him with benching him 3 years later after playing 97% of the snaps.

You cannot defend the fact he played that much but then decide this was the time to bench him in favor of the scrub known as Eric Rowe who graded out as one of the worst CB's in the NFL.

It was talked about during Super Bowl week whether the Eagles were going to target Rowe and yet the Pats put him on their best WR. They targeted him early and he clearly wasn't up to the task (shocking).

Worst coaching move ever!

I dont think anyone will believe that this was purely a football choice, and that something happened.

the issue is what could have happened that was so severe that it warranted in butler getting zero defensive snaps, but not severe enough that he wasn't active, or sent home.
It would be interesting to know the truth behind the rumors of how close he came to benching Butler in the AFCCG, since those came out prior to the SB.

If Belichick was really close (doubt we’ll ever know), then his decision may have been more of a football move than we’re assuming. If not, and I doubt he would consult the opinion of Danny Amendola either way, then it was probably more of a combo or outright punishment.

That’s the issue behind trying to guess. We don’t have the facts. I agree with you that it was a poor decision. I’m just not as sure that it was as clear cut as is being suggested. Belichick trusted that Rowe could pick up the slack, and that backfired, too, on top of sloppy play, terrible run defense, and 3 borderline calls that all went to Philly.

Chalking up Belichick's egregious Super Bowl blunder to "that's his style" and invoking the Brady-era Super Bowl record is a really dishonest approach to this.

It's the big picture view. It's the correct approach.

This is just a crazy rant. No way you can believe this stuff. They've won more Super bowls together than any other super coach QB combo of any era.

Super Bowls are hard to get to and hard to win for a variety of reasons. Yet BB and TB have done it more than any.

Holy krist..WTF are YOU smoking? He's the greatest QB in history BECAUSE he's won! Until he did he was considered a "system" QB by the Peytie Pooch/Brayette Farver azzhats and everyone in the country. Question how many godyamed chances did Peytie let slip away? and Farve ....and Aikman...and...well, just about every known QB in NFL history...? Atlanta Braves??? were you on another planet when the Pats beat the Rams? THE greatest upset in modern NFL history? Atlanta = The Rams, you boob.
We get it...you hated the Butler decision...but don't come on this board and post this horsesh!t. It's insulting to a common jackazz's intelligence, never mind Patriot fans.

Maybe it's for the same reason Arrington got benched and Butler was put in. Maybe Rowe was practicing better than Butler. I don't know. I do know that BB made a decision and he had a reason for it.

I don't do drugs. Does that make my rant sound even worse?

I was talking about their drought between 2005-14 when I was comparing them to the Atlanta Braves.

a drought???????????????????????????????? You ARE a troll. Jeezus...yeah, 2007 was a real "drought", as was 2011. When you get to the Super Bowl and lose in the last minutes like tons of other teams have done, it's a real...wait a minute...I think getting to the Super Bowl so many times in the past 17 years is a FREAKING HURRICANE. Go back the Gang Green and make it rain...at least you'll know WTF you're talking about

Which poster on this board said he had a inside source that Butler was high and drunk days or day before?
I think that was the main reason of the benching.

So you do recognize Butler must have done something. We are finally making a little progress.

Why is it dishonest?
Do you think BBs "style" has something to do with that record?
Do you think a different coach like Pete Carroll would have handled it differently?
The point isn't which style might have been better at that moment. The point is why would BB on the biggest stage suddenly change his M.O.?
Using hindsight I wish Butler played but I accept BBs discipline as part of the success it would be dishonest to ignore it now that it might have hurt.

Lazy, dishonest or both.

Dude are you legit insane?

I never said butler didn't do anything. I've said all along that if he did something he should have been punished, however that a full game benching in the superbowl didn't make sense.

How do you know the punishment if it even was punishment was too much if you dint know what he did?
If what the facts we know are correct and the “infraction” was that his actions made his coaches believe he wasn’t prepared to play why would that change later in the game?
