...begins with a whimper during draft weekend, when they use another high draft pick (#57 overall this time) on yet another small, soft, Eurotrash Defenceman. SweeNeely up to their same old tricks again.

Looking forward to the free agency starting on Sunday!

I'm glad I grew up in Boston, because I cannot see how people who didn't can root for one team but not any of the others.
I'm from Connecticut. Its a lot of divided loyalties here

People in the Boston hockey press, who should know better, are actually considering Sean Kuraly as the Bs 3rd-line Centre. That stiff is barely a 4th-line-calibre Centre, if he's even a Centre at all because of how awful he is on face-offs. Former Bs Austin Czarnik (RH) and Colby Cave (LH) would've been better options.
Backes is probably our best 3rd-line Centre at the moment, though moving him there would leave us very left-handed-dominant at the Forward positions.
Old friend Chris Versteeg is still a UFA; he would make the 3rd line (with Backes at Centre) old, but at least would provide some right-handed balance. Same with Brian Gionta, though he would make the 3rd line even older.

Edited thread title ... hope you don't mind CS.

I am a die hard homer but I must admit I am not overly amped up.

Best hope is the young players produce more, Bergeron / Krecji / Chara are 1 more year over prime.

I would be more excited about the season. if they played in a division that wasn't so tough. tampa and Toronto will be very hard to beat in a playoff series.

the D does not look strong to me. hope I'm wrong

I agree...Bergeron missed all of TC, and I wonder just how much longer he can produce at his recent level, especially if Pasternak is moved to the 2nd line to help that old, slow thief Krejci. Krejci's & Rask's albatross contracts are Peter Chiarelli's true legacy.

Chara will never be a 50-point player again, but his contract is now much more reasonable and better-fitting of his current abilities, which are still top-4 calibre, on this team at least. He & McAvoy make a nice, balanced pair, as does Krug (when he returns) & Kevin Miller. The 3rd pairing, however, is downright scary. I'm not a Brandon Carlo fan - at all - and Midget Matt Grzelcyk is too...damn...small.

If I were SweeNeely, I would seek a young, top-6 RHF to balance the top 2 lines by offering (with picks/prospects, if necessary) Danton Heinen, a young, top-9-calibre LHF but who doesn't have quite the offensive potential as either DeBrusk or Ryan Donato and is therefore more expendable.

So do I, but trading McQuaid to the NYR has weakened the defence by at least 33%. Kampfer is a #7-8 at the most, and the only young defenceman in the pipeline who might combine even a little offensive ability with toughness is Jakob Zboril, on whom SweeNeely seem to have soured. The FO really, Really fecked-up their lone opportunity to re-stock the system during the 2015 draft.

Disgraceful. Absolutely disgraceful.

This team has become all that we feared: older, softer, weaker, and way, Way too easy to play against.

I REFUSE to watch another game until Tooka Rask is GONE.

I was surprised how slow they looked. I know Washington have a good squad but damn, our guys look really slow and way overmatched. Yikes

Wow, Barfalo must really suck.

Any games that Cassidy was planning to give Rask he should now give to Halak.

I (still) hate Tooka Rask, who is <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Halak.

That's the risk one takes when using its 1st-round pick on a short defenceman who isn't stout...injuries.
