2019 Mock Drafts

I'm not early -- this thread is almost two weeks late, if you really think about it.

First attempt of the year, so don't take it seriously at all. At all.

For example, there's almost no way that Lawrence will last until the end of the 1st round, unless he just falls apart this year. Also, past the 4th round, I was practically picking names out of a hat (for example, there's almost no chance we take Davis from Texas, given his reported struggles to learn the playbook; I just haven't done enough work on the 2019 class to know more than the first 100 - 150 names, so I started putting in placeholders for positions, although I do actually like Redwine and Stick). Nonetheless, mocks are a fun way to pass some time in the offseason, and to think ahead to the draft haul for next year.

I was excited to watch AJ Gray this year as a potential late round sleeper, but it turns out that his career is over. So I'll pick him ceremonially in this draft, since he's done playing due to a heart problem. Poor kid will never get to realize his NFL dream.

Wow excellent mock! Really like the Davis pick. He was a beast for Saban last season despite rushing back from the gunshot wound.

First we need to project our needs. Of course defensive line is always nice. Of course I assume we will have to do something about guard cause I expect Mason to walk but guard is a spot they may be able to get by at. I do expect them to keep Trey Flowers though so while DL be nice it isn't a huge need. Assuming Rivers/Wise come on next year a bit we can maybe get by without more DL talent in the draft. I don't think McCourty is the long term answer at CB and I think they need a 3rd LB unless Christian Sam really comes on but who knows. Of course you need to search for a QB but who knows if one is within range. IT would be nice to get a backup TE who is young with upside but not needed as long as Gronk is healthy.

Safety will be a need as they are getting older back there too but it depends on what is in the draft.

Nice thought process. Lamar is interesting if he declares. I've seen Grier get a lot of hype, though. If he has a big season like many think -- he's usually on most Heisman short lists -- then he may not be available at 64. Tough to project this far out, though.

Could you share the reasons you like Long as a top 40 player? I haven't done a full review, but I'm not sure I would have put him that high. My guess is he doesn't declare next year. Always appreciate your perspective, though!

Yep. That IS THE Q!
Spring game further exposed it. The good thing is that he will have to eat DTs as well now so we can see how he does at that - which is key for BB.
Also the other Q of maturity will find an answer..

Thank you. I like Long as a cover cb. If he declares or not but last year he was statically arguably the best cover corner. PFF cb stats back that up. His height and weight fit the bill. I saw some of his tape and clearly the talent and technique is there. He did snake some mistakes he didn't pay for but as you said he is young and may not even declare.

He also shows well in zone concepts. I know he hasn't justified that stop yet but I expect him to by the time he declares

It's an interesting question for sure. My personal view is that the DT / DE positions this year are stacked and that they don't need to trade up, but I wouldn't be opposed to it, either, as long as they hit on the players like with Jones / Hightower. One of the best front 7 drafts I've ever seen.

Yeah, depending on the big board, these mock draft simulators can be shockingly unrealistic (at least based on consensus rankings). They're still fun, though, and I enjoy the mental exercise of determining if the #4 DT & #2 WR has more team value than the #5 DE and #2 TE, etc. Positional stacks vs draft capital is enjoyable time killer.

I use fanspeak, first-pick, and walkthemock. Depending on the board, I either get all my binkies, or I'm left with tons of players that I don't like. Sometimes I trade down and miss my target by 1 pick. Rage inducing, haha! Overall, the process has given me a more charitable attitude toward the Patriots; sometimes, you just have to make do with second or third options. That's life.

Anyway, here's one of the many that I've done during slow moments at work. I'm not sure this is realistic, and not all of these players are highly rated for me, but taken as a whole, I'd be very pleased if this is actually how the draft worked out:

In all seriousness, though, I fully expect us to shift a few picks into next season, and also use a couple mid round picks to trade for players. My guess is we draft 8 - 10 players.
