Garcia cut!

Belichick has hit on a number of draft picks but overall the draft isn’t his strength. The thing that sets Belichick apart is his ability to acquire players who came into the league as high draft picks but have failed to live up to expectations.

I don't think picking up high draft picks off the scrap heap and turning them into players is his strong suit.

Bill's best attributes are he doesn't live with a mistake, is exhaustive in acquiring talent to fit his program, knows value, and manages the cap well so he has the flexibility to acquire talent he needs to win.

I think it was a surprise. Not just because Garcia himself was saying that he was raring to go, but would they have cut the lineman, King, if they knew that a slot would open with Garcia the next day?

IDK. King is a 6034/310 Guard. he bounced between the Pats and Ravens Psquads last season (as a UDFA rookie). I don't think he would've had an impact on the Tackle situation one way or another.

That said, it's possible that Garcia just received a negative health diagnosis yesterday, and that everything seemed fine until then. I don't know that they'd have kept King, regardless.

I'm not saying that King and Garcia were alternatives. But it's an odd time of the year to cut a guy -- unless you need the slot for someone else. And, if they'd known the situation with Garcia, they'd have known they'd have a slot coming open. So I don't think they knew the situation until just now. That's my reasoning.

Why the F#CK do the Patriots end up with so many guys on the nonfootball injury list? And no, I don't have a list of guys but it seems they always have people on that list, and they draft guys that never end up playing a down due to injury...

sometimes they target players like Garcia who are really good talents, but have some risk associated with them for an illness or injury

It worked out with Marcus Cannon, it didn't work out with Garcia... can't win them all, can't blame them for trying tho.. If he worked out and was a starting Tackle, that 3rd round pick (#85 overall) would have looked like a steal

Now it just looks likes a 3rd rounder that didnt pan out, which is fairly common for that round and later

This one hurts. Garcia was a fav of mine & I had high hopes but injuries, illnesses etc you just don't know & obviously the Pats didn't know or think it was this bad when they drafted him. Can't get mad at a guy for having blood clots in his lungs.

Thuney is the only one who might start camp on PUP. The rest will be fine..
It paints a murkier picture than before, as I figured that Garcia would at least provide a depth option.

I appreciate their cautious approach but we gave up a first, a third (2019), and Cannon is still battling foot issues. Not a great way to head into the summer. Let’s hope that you’re right and that none of the theee have any setbacks, as well as no one else getting injured at a position that sees a lot.

It's possible that they do need the spot for someone, but previous Psquadders get cut at this point in the off-season fairly frequently. In fact, last May 18th, Chris Barker - a Psquad Guard from 2016, was cut. I don't know that he was immediately replaced by anyone.

The difference being that the Pats (and everyone else) knew about Cannon's cancer before he was drafted. Garcia's illness was completely undiscovered until he started having symptoms at the start of Camp last season. So, it wasn't a "health risk" pick as far as anyone knew (including Garcia) at the time it was made.

IDK. If Garcia had been symptomatic or had been under treatment/on meds (blood thinners), one would think it would've been flagged at the Combine.

Honestly I be pretty surprised if this was an issue before last year. I just find it hard to believe it didn't/wouldn't come out then.

No way we draft him w/ so little picks knowing theres a chance he never plays a snap.

Everything written noted he was underweight for a lineman. Injury related or not, he seemed too talented to last til the 21st pick of the third. There was an issue whether blood clots or unknown at that time.

Worse than that awful stretch during the ‘06 and ‘07 drafts? Come to think of it, ‘08 wasn’t that great either, outside of a short window for Jerod Mayo.

That 3 year stretch would be tough to beat, although I hear you about last year, too. Outside of a year of Cooks, we didn’t get much of anything.
Well we turned cooks into Wynn

His strong suit is he investigates every way of acquiring players and adjusts year to year depending on how situations turn in his favor. Van Noy was a nice pickup a high second who hadn't turned into a star. Tried some others less successfully, but worth it for one fine player at the right position who earned a new contract.

As in many fields, the "secret" is, out work, out smart and out learn.

Which means what, in the real world? They had a 1st round talent with med, or weight issues. Cannon had cancer, so did Solder. The question for draftniks should be, how do the Browns, Lions, Jets etc have tons of premium picks and stil suck?

Solder developed cancer after he became a Patriot; Cannon fell because he was diagnosed after tests at the Combine.

He weighed in at 302 at the Combine. That's a little light for a guy who stands a bit over 6'6", but not "there must be a health issue" light.

I am actually so gutted for him. He seemed like such a good player coming to us when the draft happened. I really just hope his Health is okay, and that he won't have a life long problems with the Blood Clots.

Hope he can find a good job for himself or find some way into football

He was cleared to play football with no future issues from the blood clots expected.

I am glad this was spotted before something bad happened to the kid.

I think of Don Blackmon, Reggie Lewis. There are more important things than an NFL career,.

A happy and healthy life will hopefully be his Super Bowl.
