Resetting for day 2 of the draft.

After Evans was gone, I was hoping that BB would trade out of 23. after he took Wynn, then I was really hoping that he would have traded out of 23. The Pats now have 43, 63, and what 95 for tonight and then the draft is basically over for them. 6th and 7th round picks rarely make the team, and if they do, they have no impact. Of course, there are a few exceptions, Landon Roberts was a 6th round pick, and he is the starting LB (Scary, I know) and of course, Edleman.

I would have liked BB to have traded down from 23 in the first round and picked up a 4th round pick, or taken multiple second rounders. The funny thing is, he most likely still could have drafted Wynn with any of those picks.

I love the Sony Michel pick, he has been my binky all along. I feel he will be great with the Pats.

I would love to see the Georgia theme going and the Pats pick up Lorenzo Carter at 43 (if he is still there), if not, at least someone can has a chance to develop into a decent defensive player.

The Patriots of today, are a much worse team than the one that got destroyed in the Superbowl (by a back-up QB). They are minus Solder and Butler. Michel is an improvement over Lewis. If they have to put Wynn out there at tackle, then you better hope they draft a QB, because Brady won't survive.

Somehow people are convinced that the addition of the other McCourty (a guy who was going to get cut from a 0-16 team) is a good move. If he is playing, then the Pats are in trouble.

Right now the Pats defense is:

Flowers, Shelton, Brown, Clayborn subs Guy, Butler, Valentine
Hightower, Van Noy, Roberts subs Flowers
Gilmore, Rowe, McCourty, Chung subs Jones(es), McCourty, Richards

This defense, is slightly better than the one that Foles destroyed, if Hightower gets hurt, you might as well start tanking the season.

A first round of Evans and Michel would have been perfect. I think when the Cowboys took Vanden Esch, that screwed up the Pats back-up plans if Evans wasn't there, and they are trying to save face with this "we wanted Wynn the whole time" but that clearly makes no sense.

The Titans used picks #25 and #215 to jump ahead of the Pats, so the Pats could have easily had Evans in exchange for pick #23 and #198 or even #210. What are the chances that any of those 6th rounders even make the Pats?

OK, picks that I would like to see in rounds 2-3:

Lorenzo Carter, EDGE Georgia
Sam Hubbard, DE Ohio ST.
Arden Key, DE LSU
Malik Jefferson, LB Texas

Maybe BB can move Gillislee, Britt, Dorsett and grab some more picks.

We shall see, I'm guessing that instead BB will overdraft a special teams player.
If we walk away with Carter and Jefferson in round 2, I’d be thrilled. Though I really think they trade their own 2nd round pick for a 3 & a 4. Then they’d have two 3rd round picks and a 4th. For some reason I think they definitely pick WR Daesean Hamilton tonight.

So, just a thought: IF they're going after SF's tackle, and IF they really were looking at moving up for Ragnow, is it possible that one of Thuney/Mason/Wynn plays center?

I think Daniels would play center. Mason and Thuney are the guards, Wynn and Cannon your tackles. Waddle's the first man up and Garcia's inactive while he gets back into shape. Andrews and Karras are interior line subs. I have no idea what to make of the Trent Brown rumors, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah, I agree, unless they land Brown. The I just don't know.

Size is a question, Hes undersized for his position. This is a fact. I love Hurst though. Some guys beat the size question, some do not

I don't agree with the size question marks. The two best DTs in the nfl right now are undersized guys in Donald and Atkins. Hurst to me has a shot to join them. I think he is much more promising than Easley was and his medical questions are minor.

To me he is the only defensive player left in this draft who may have the ability to take over games consistently.

I love Hurst and he's a hometown boy and his dad played for the Patriots but I suspect the medical questions are less minor than believed.

Offense

QB
- Meh. Not really all that critical to me. I' be fine with Mike White on Day-3, or Kanoff as a UDFA.

WR - I don't really see the need to draft a WR before Day-3, unless the guy is also a killer punt returner. Even then, I'm not sure of the value over a UDFA.

TE - I'm not sure that Goedert's upside comes close enough to Bennett-level to warrant the #63, much less the #43 (although he probably goes somewhere around there). Ian Thomas at #95 might present better value - if BB is even concerned about it at this point.

OT/OL - I'm not at all sure there's a prospect who's so far above those who might be snagged later that he'd be worth the #43/#63, now that Wynn is on the roster.

Defense

CB - I'm not seeing any CB prospect left on the board who impresses me so much that I'd feel compelled to take them in round-2 (if necessary) over some of the prospects who seem likely to be available later.

ILB - Same as for CB. Maybe Mata'afa, Jacobs in the 3rd, or Christian Sam later on.

DL - I like Hand the best as a 2-gapping, 3-4 DE/interior pass-rusher (similar to Lawrence Guy), but there may be developmental prospects available much later who might eventually present similar value, just not as immediately (Andrew Brown, Jullian Taylor, Breeland Speaks, etc. - there's a long list of similar prospects with whom the Pats have had significant pre-draft contact).

DL, 4-3 DE/Edge - Hubbard seems just about perfect for the Pat due to his run-D and "intangibles", and I think he'd be worth the #43 as a fairly immediate contributor and a 2019 Trey Flowers replacement. OTOH, Ejiofor, Green, Fitts, Aruna, Armstrong and a few others who could ba available later might also be okay, although with a somewhat longer developmental road ahead of them.

OLB/Edge - I'm breaking these guys out as a separate category, because I think they maybe have more potential and athleticism than the 4-3 DE/Edge types to cover at least some ILB assignments on occasion. That starts with Sweat and Carter who are #1 and #2 on the pSPARQ chart. One or both of these guys seem likely to be gone by #43 or shortly thereafter. Landry also falls into this category, but I'm not really happy about his lack of run-D.

SAFETY - There are a couple-three prospects who may have some developmental potential and who may be available later, but, IMHO Justin Reid has no peer left on the board, and we may not see another like him for the next 2-3 drafts (which may be too late to get a D-Mac replacement). If the Pats want him, I think they'll absolutely need to take him at #43 - if he's even still available.

Aaron Donald plays one gap. Mo Hurst may not be the best fit here. We like two gappers. He might be too small for that

I really want Landry. Losing Long and Ninkovich was tough, along with injuries. But I won't be disappointed if we got a CB.
The good news is we are 10th in line today to grab a Defense player unless BB sees value in gaining picks.

#1 Our biggest issue is Linebacker as we need not one but two that can cover and also a penetrating DT or someone at DE who can set the edge better than Flowers, Wise or Rivers who might be strictly edge. (I like all three of those guys).

Hightower is great but won't play 16 (maybe 9-10). Van Noy might be your third LB, certainly not one or two. Grigsby and Roberts? Nyet! Longi is a long shot especially after being mushed by a stoner that almost killed him.

#43
Joey Jewell
Landry
Carter
Darius Leonard

Arden Key(was fisrt rounder but slipping. Could be score)
Avery
Scales

#2 Penetrating D Lineman
Hubbard
Hurst
Phillips
P.J. Hall (Now rated a third rounder) Won't get to #95
Zach Seiler( small school but check him out)

A QB replacement
#95
Rudolph
Lauletta
Falk

CB could make sense. I believe Rowe is not bad. J Jones back as slot CB will help. McCourty was a good signing.

Josh Jackson
Isaiah Oliver

A TE replacement better than Allen, Niklas and Hollister makes sense.

#63
Goedert

A Safety because lets face it, all were weak last season

Harrison
Cruikshank

My favorites I have underlined

Head scratcher? With 6 RB's on the Roster, RB was not our biggest need. You can argue second best RB in the Draft.

Tradeables for today?
Class 1:
White RB (Cheap RB but Burkhead taking snaps and Micheal can catch)
Brown DT (First rounder who has been mediocre at best)
Devin McCourty S (Only if we have an upgrade Terrible Super Bowl)

Class 2:
Blocking TE Allen
Mitchell WR (Needs to go see a gypsy to remove the curse. Just tough to tie up a roster spot on an injury waiting to happen. Good when healthy which is ?????)
Grissom DE. Becoming more valuable as he plays ST

Class 3:
Gillislee RB (spare RB not used much)

DW Toys

True in a sense but frankly I don't think that matters. Saying that is akin to saying Aaron Donald would have less value here cause he doesn't 2 gap.

Of course it's not true at all and the same goes for Hurst. Now of his medical situation is worse than advertised that's a different matter. Personally I don't see why it would be. He seems to be able to play football just fine on tape.

Lol. It is true. Aaron Donald and Mo's talents wouldnt be best suited for a 2 gap system. It would be a waste

Would you put Tom Brady in the wishbone.
When players are put into a scheme that doesnt play to their strengths, it makes it harder for them to succeed

Lots of intrigue for today. Do they stay and pick? Do they trade down with both picks to fill the hole in the middle of the draft? Does Shaq Mason or Joe Thuney get traded to help fill the hole? I have no idea what way they go today.

I was despondent about last nights picks but my girl freind pointed out that the ones I liked from before never made the team. She’s talking about ealy who was not a pick but the point she made does have some merit. I wanted certain picks before but someone else got them and they were not good. This is why nfl scouts won’t employ me

I want the Pats to get SC's LB/DE Uchenna Nwosu. While raw, he's an absolute game wrecker. He's the Su'a Cravens BB wanted a couple years ago but way better. He has an insane jump off the LOS on passing/running downs and can play all over. He would provide a lot of juice on passing downs.
