Patriots now have 2 first round picks, what to do?

Stay put and draft players with our 3 first picks.

Bill has been trading a lot of picks in the past 2 years , we need some impact players under rookie contracts to balance things or we will be in cap hell or letting important players hitting the market every year. The last generation of core players are getting up there in age and we will go through a major rebuild from this year on.

Acquire talent (in theory) with these picks instead of investing too much on a top 15 player.

I could see BB packaging one of the 2nd rounders with one 1st for a trade up but I don't see much value, maybe 3 or 4 slots (unless it's the 23 and the 49ers pick). Would rather draft a RB or WR with that 2nd.

I'm not seeing much scenarios for a trade down either unless the offer is too good for the #23 like that one from the Coradelle Petterson draft that gave us Jamie Collins, Dobston and others.

Where could a drafted player make the roster?
QB
Rb
Wr maybe
TE maybe
OL at least 2
DE
Lb
Cb
S

I think we are much more likely to move down and gain picks than to move up.
It’s also possible to trade picks for 2019 picks because too many rookies one year and not enough the next isn’t ideal

If there was ever a time to keep the picks it would be now. 4 picks in the first 64 could fill 4 holes.

In terms of 1st or 2nd rounders I could see a player making the roster on basically all positions.

From the 5th round on (since we don't have a 4th) then I agree with your assessment that receivers and OL are likely facing an uphill battle.

I like the value for WR on the 2nd round though, if that's the choice I just hope we get Keenan Allens or Marquise lees instead of Dobster.

OL stands a very good chance even in the 7th.

Would rather draft a RB or WR with that 2nd.

I have significant doubts that BB would draft an RB in the 2nd, much less with the #43.

WR, OTOH, is a definite maybe. I wouldn't be shocked if he took Dante Pettis at #63.

Pettis (6004/186) has been among the leading college punt returners for four seasons, and not a bad receiver, either. He's already had a formal meeting with the Pats, but also with the Eagles, Jags, Texans, Ravens, Saints and Steelers. I've seen him projected from mid-5th up through mid-3rd, so the Pats may well need to snag him at the end of the 2nd, if they want him.

Having those two first rounders only 8 picks apart seems to present several new opportunities.

As always, if there's a prospect available when the Pats are on the clock at #23 who BB and Caserio have a significantly higher grade on than others on their board, and that prospct is unlikely to still be available at #31, BB will pull the trigger.

However, if there's no significant difference in grade between the prospects available at #23 and those who'll still be available 8 picks later, BB may seek to trade down.

If the Bears (picking at #8) are keen on getting back into the 1st, their #39 + #77 + #115 for the Pats #23 + #198 (just acquired from the Rams) would be a pretty even exchange (772 from the Pats for 779 from CHI).

Similarly, if the Broncos (picking at #5) wanted back in, their #40 + #71 + #160 (also from the Rams) would be almost exactly equal to the #23 (760 from the Pats for 762 from DEN).

Either way, the Pats would get another early 2nd, an early or mid-3rd, plus a 4th or 5th round pick.

If the Pat make a selection at #23, then the #31 may be in play for a trade down.

With the Pats seeming (to me) to have potentially strong needs for ...
- OT (depending on their own evals of in-house candidates)
- OG (if an extension for Mason seems cost-prohibitive)
- ILB (possibly an early starter PLUS a developmental prospect)
- Edge (especially if a Trey Flowers extension seems cost-prohibitive)
- Safety (potential 2nd-year starter out of an unusually deep safety class)
- QB (developmental prospect)
- TE (whether Gronks stays or goes)
- CB (developmental prospect)
- RB (RBBC candidate to challenge Hill and Gillislee)
- Punt returner/WR
.... it seems to me that more picks may present more overall roster value than fewer picks after packaging a couple to trade up for one prospect.

Why is franchising an OG cost prohibitive?

I believe that the 2018 FT for OL is $14M (no distinction between OT and IOL, AFAIK). I'm guessing that it would be higher in 2019.

Seems like that might be cost-prohibitive.

my bad. I thought that OT's had a separate cap tag.

I think we end up traded our own first.

Two of Rashaan Evans or LVE/Ronnie Harrison/Connor Williams/Lamar Jackson and I'd be good, but come on guys Belichick will obviously trade down with #31...
